And it begins with Deborah Sampson who, disguised as a man, fought in the American Revolution. Or take Sarah Edmonds, who fought in the the Civil War as “Frank Thompson,”—even spying behind Confederate lines “disguised” as a woman. More recently, leaders including Oveta Culp, Mary Hallaren, Susan Ahn Cuddy, Michelle Howard, and Ann E. Dunwoody, have opened doors for the next generation of women warriors. Here’s more. Banksy’s latest A new work by British artist Banksy appeared in a London neighborhood on St. Patrick’s Day, drawing a crowd before the street artist even had a chance to confirm it was his. The mural recreates the missing leaves of a severely pruned tree, beside which stands a person with a spray hose, covered in the dripping green paint. Portrait restoration Art lovers on social media have been abuzz over the restoration of a portrait of Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII, at the Louvre. A dramatic before-and-after appears on the museum’s website, fitting for a painting with a dramatic past. The portrait was painted by Hans Holbein the Younger at the behest of Henry VIII, who was negotiating the marriage as a political alliance—without ever having seen Anne. Once he saw the painting, Henry agreed to marry her. But he was disappointed once they finally met, noting she wasn’t as attractive in real life. © Jonathan Brady—PA Images/ Getty Images POPULAR ON BRITANNICA ARTICLES 1. St. Patrick 2.
