HOW MUCH IS PET INSURANCE?

The cost of your Pumpkin Pet Insurance plan will depend on a few key factors:

Breed: Certain breeds have more health problems than others and cost a little
more to insure, so this is a factor that can impact the monthly cost of your
plan.

Location: Average vet care costs in your city are taken into consideration, so
pet parents in cities with less costly vet care may have lower monthly premiums
(and vice versa).

Age: Older pets are at a higher risk for developing certain illnesses, so you
can expect to pay a higher monthly premium for an adult or senior vs. a puppy or
kitten. That said, Pumpkin insurance plans will NEVER reduce or limit coverage
for aging pets.

Species: Generally speaking, dogs tend to cost more to insure than cats.
However, this won’t always be the case depending on the breed, age, and location
of your pet.

Annual Coverage Limit: The amount your insurance plan is designed to cover in
eligible vet bills each year will impact the cost of your plan. Higher annual
limits usually result in higher monthly premiums, whereas lower annual limits
result in lower ones.

Annual Deductible: How much you choose to pay towards covered vet bills each
year before your 90% cash back kicks in can also affect the monthly cost of your
plan. In general, the higher the annual deductible, the lower the monthly
premium.

WHICH PET INSURANCE COVERS PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS?

Most pet insurance plans, including Pumpkin plans, don’t cover “pre-existing
conditions” that occur or show symptoms before coverage starts or during a
waiting period. However, if a pre-existing condition is curable (e.g., UTI, paw
fracture), was cured, and has been free of symptoms and treatment for 180 days,
Pumpkin plans would cover it if it occurs again in the future, with the
exception of knee & hind leg ligament conditions. If a knee or hind leg ligament
condition occurs prior to the day after you purchase your Pumpkin plan or during
the waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.

It’s important to note that not all pet insurances will cover eligible cured
pre-existing conditions that occur again in the future, so this is definitely a
plus with Pumpkin insurance plans!

All that said, having an incurable pre-existing condition, or a knee or hind leg
ligament condition, doesn't mean you shouldn’t join the Pumpkin pack! You can
always enroll your pet and get covered for new conditions that develop down the

ARE PET INSURANCE PLANS AND PET HEALTH INSURANCE THE SAME THING?

Some providers refer to their plans as pet health insurance, but this isn’t
always the most accurate description as pet insurance plans are not the same as
human health insurance. They work differently, and remember that pet insurance
plans are designed to cover accidents and illnesses rather than all types of pet
health care. It may seem odd, but pet insurance actually falls under property &
casualty insurance.


DO ALL VETS TAKE PET INSURANCE?

Unlike a human health insurance HMO, your Pumpkin Pet Insurance plan’s coverage
isn’t limited to a “network” of health care providers. Since you get paid back
directly, your pet is free to receive treatment from any licensed veterinarian,
specialist, emergency clinic or hospital you choose in the U.S. or Canada!


WHAT DOES PET INSURANCE COVER?

WHICH PET INSURANCE COVERS DENTAL?

Some insurances don’t cover them at all. Others only reimburse you up to $1k per
year for dental illnesses, or require an annual dental exam first.

periodontal disease AKA gum disease), along with any exams, X-rays, treatment,
surgery, and prescription meds used to diagnose or treat them. Pumpkin plans
also cover tooth extractions for dental injuries.
