EXPLORE THE SMART PROGRAM AND ELIGIBILITY

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and
workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART offers scholarships
for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students pursuing a STEM degree.
Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and
guaranteed employment with the Department of Defense after graduation.
Applications are open annually from August 1-December 1.

BUILDING FUTURE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE LEADERS

The SMART Scholarship builds future leaders in 24 STEM disciplines and is the
largest education and workforce development initiative under the Department of
Defense STEM Program. Scholarship recipients receive hands-on experience at one
of over 200 Department of Defense facilities during their internships and apply
this knowledge as early career professionals. Department of Defense facilities
are at the forefront of innovation in artificial intelligence, biotechnology,
autonomy, cyber, space, 5G, and other technology areas.

Full Tuition
Scholarship recipients receive full tuition to any U.S. accredited college or
university
Annual Stipend
SMART scholars earn annual stipends between $30,000-$46,000 depending on degree
level
Internships
Scholars gain invaluable experience during summer internships with Department of
Defense leaders
Career
Jump-start your career with guaranteed employment after graduation


MEET DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SMART SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Whether pursuing your degree or working at a sponsoring facility, scholars are
at the heart of the SMART Scholarship. Through dedicated mentorship, training,
and grant opportunities, SMART enables scholars to build the foundations to
excel in STEM. After graduation, Ph.D. recipients can apply for research funding
through the SMART SEED Grant. Learn more about the scholar experience to see if
