What does it mean when your OneDrive account is frozen?


WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN YOUR ONEDRIVE ACCOUNT IS FROZEN?

If you have a Skype, Xbox, Hotmail or Outlook.com account then you also have a
OneDrive account. Even if you access the other Microsoft services, if you don't
access your OneDrive account within 12 months, or if you exceed your storage
limit, your OneDrive account will be frozen.

Notes: 

 * Not sure what OneDrive is? With OneDrive, you can securely store your
   pictures, files, and folders in one place, share them with others, and get to
   them from anywhere. Learn more.

 * If you think you received a notification by mistake, read Why did I get an
   email saying my account will be deleted?




WHY IS MY ONEDRIVE FROZEN?

Your OneDrive account might be frozen because:

 * Your subscription has expired or renewal has failed. View your Microsoft
   Office account information.

 * Your 100GB Samsung bonus has expired. This was for a fixed period of time and
   cannot be renewed.

 * Other OneDrive storage that you purchased or gained through a promotion has
   expired.

 * You haven't signed in lately. To prevent OneDrive from freezing, you must
   either:
   
   * Sign in to the OneDrive website at least once a year. 
   
   * Use OneDrive on your computer, Xbox or mobile device at least once a year.


HOW DO I UNFREEZE MY ACCOUNT?

If your OneDrive is frozen because you stopped using it, sign in to the OneDrive
website and follow the on-screen instructions to unfreeze it. 

If your OneDrive is frozen because you’re over your storage limit, you have two
options:

1. GET MORE STORAGE

Increasing your storage quota will unfreeze your account. This can be achieved
by taking a manufacturer bonus, referral bonus, or buying a subscription.

Sign in to Manage your storage and see what plans and offers are available to
you. 

Need more than 1 TB? With an Microsoft 365 Family subscription, you get 6 TB: 1
TB for each of the 6 users. You can share your total storage around and have use
of more than 1 TB by sharing folders between users and adding the shared folders
to your own OneDrive.

You can also unfreeze your account through the OneDrive mobile app, or purchase
additional storage if needed. 

 * To unfreeze your account, tap Unfreeze your account. (Note that you will have
   30 days to remove enough files to be under the storage limit before your
   account will be refrozen.) Tap Unfreeze to acknowledge the reminder.

 * To purchase additional storage, tap Get 1 TB of OneDrive storage with Office
   365.

 * After requesting an account unfreeze or purchasing additional storage, it can
   take up to 24 hours to unfreeze your account.

2. DELETE SOME FILES

Sign in to the OneDrive website and choose Unfreeze your account to temporarily
access your files. You'll have 30 days to remove enough files to be within your
storage limit.

 * View the largest files on your OneDrive. Your files will be read-only, but
   you can download or delete files to get back under your storage limit. If you
   don't remove enough files within 30 days, your account will be frozen once
   more and you won't be able to unfreeze it again.

 * Free up OneDrive storage by choosing which OneDrive folders to sync with your
   computer.

Notes: 

 * After requesting an account unfreeze or purchasing additional storage, it can
   take up to 24 hours to unfreeze your account.

 * If your account is frozen again, and you have questions, you can email the
   OneDrive support team.


WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY ONEDRIVE IS FROZEN?

Don’t worry, your files are still there. You just need to unfreeze your account
to get access to your files again.

You will need to unfreeze your account, or your files will eventually be
deleted.


HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO UNFREEZE MY ONEDRIVE ACCOUNT?

When unfreezing your account, most accounts are restored within 24 hours.

If your account isn't restored after 24 hours, you can email the OneDrive
support team.


HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I STAY WITHIN THE STORAGE LIMIT?

Check and compare the size of your OneDrive storage to the available disk space
on your PC. If you don't have enough space on your OneDrive or your PC, you will
have to move or delete some files, or reduce the number of files and folders.

If you don't have enough space on your OneDrive, you can:

 * Choose to buy more storage.

 * Delete some files and folders. View the largest files on your OneDrive.

 * Free up OneDrive storage by choosing which OneDrive folders to sync with your
   computer.


WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOTHING AFTER MY ONEDRIVE IS FROZEN?

Your OneDrive account and all files within it (including OneNote notebooks
stored in OneDrive) will be deleted on or after the date indicated on
OneDrive.com when you sign in. This will not affect content you may have in
other Microsoft services such as Outlook.com or Xbox.
