From neglected textbooks to outgrown wardrobes, the aftermath of packing up often means a landfill-bound cascade of belongings. This y…… December 07, 2023… donateNYC's Holiday Gift Guide… During the holiday season, a lot of money is spent, and waste occurs. A great way to combat both of these is going thrifting. Come thrifting with us at our partner stores to find décor and gifts for this winter season! Clothing is always a great gift, espe…… November 15, 2023… Donate This Thanksgiving 2023… Donate This Thanksgiving 2023: Thanksgiving is a day for spending time with family and friends, enjoying colorful leaves, and eating delicious pumpkin pie. But it’s also for giving thanks not just to your family and friends, but to those in the community and to earth. A great way to give back and celebrate this Thanksgiving is to donate! Find places to donate by going to our website’s Directory. Here you can pick a category of item you want to donate and put in your address to find recipients near you! During the holiday season, a lot of extra food is coming from households. Instead of sending that food to a landfill, why not give it to someone who needs it? Here is a list of some places where you can donate food. These places fight hunger year-round, but food donations are very important for these organizations during the holiday season: * * Hell’s Kitchen Community Cupboard * Iris House: Food Pantry * Grand Central Neighborhood Social Service Corporation * Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen * House of Good Deeds * Find closer places in the Directory! Another way to give thanks this Thanksgiving is by volunteering to give others meals. * New York Common Pantry: * * Volunteer to provide families in need with a Thanksgiving meal! Go here for more information and ways to volunteer.. * City Harvest * * Their calendar has many events where one can volunteer with them in all boroughs. Volunteers can help collect food at different food rescue markets. They also accept food donations! * New York Cares * * The volunteer opportunities with New York Cares are endless. Go here to sign up. These opportunities include: handing out bagged groceries, delivering lunch to seniors and homebound residents, packing pantry bags, and so many more. Donating and volunteering with these organizations is a great way to help your community and the environment this Thanksgiving!… October 20, 2023… donateNYC’s Partnership Volunteer Sessions… DonateNYC has many incredible partners that we have highlighted in previous articles and who you can read more about on our website. Here, we are going to be talking about two of our partners with frequent volunteer sessions that you can join: Brooklyn Book Bodega and FABSCRAP. We had a blast getting in depth overviews of how they work and seeing what goes on behind the scenes! First, we went to FABSCRAP which was such an amazing experience. Volunteers come in and get trained quickly and then are off to work. There are a lot of volunteers who come regularly and create a community feeling! You get three hours to sort through fabric from different brands to see what is useable and what is going to be sent to “scraps”. One cool fact is that the scraps don’t even get sent to landfills – they get used as carpet or insulation in houses! Truly everything gets used and it’s great to see waste streams that aren’t talked about as often being reused. After sorting, the volunteers can shop and get free five pounds of clothing. The amount of fabric you’re able to bring home for mending and other projects is amazing! Now on to Brooklyn Book Bodega, which was another amazing experience! Just like at FABSCRAP, there was an orientation on how to sort the books that are donated. Brooklyn Book Bodega is looking for books that are in great condition. Part of the session was sorting the books based on quality and on age. While there, I even got to see a donation being done and it was so cool to see people in the community bringing tons of books. These books that are being donated can be used by someone who wants them instead of sadly sitting in a landfill! After three hours of volunteering with BBB you get to take as many books as you’d like to bring home. Which can be great gifts for family and friends! To volunteer with FABSCRAP you can view their upcoming events here. To volunteer with Brooklyn Book Bodega you can visit their volunteer page here. And if you would like to volunteer with any of our other partners go to our website: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/donate/site/Partnership/About. Here you can find all our partners and their own individual websites where you can sign up to volunteer!… October 04, 2023… donateNYC Halloween 2023 Costume Guide… Donate NYC’s Guide to Secondhand Halloween Costumes for 2023 - 1 Every Halloween we must decide on our elaborate costumes. However, when people buy so many costumes just to throw out after the weekend, Halloween can become one of the most wasteful holidays around! That’s why we’re here to help pick out costumes that are trendy yet easy to find at your local thrift store. We went thrifting at our partner thrift shops such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Housing Works and found some ideas for a couple of costumes that would be great this Halloween. The Netflix Show “Wednesday” was extremely popular this year, and the Addams Family members go great with Halloween. So here is a Wednesday Addams Outfit… Just like Wednesday, Barbie was another hit this year and there are so many different Barbie options to be. But pink is Barbie’s color. We found pink pants and a shirt but there are plenty of pink options at all the thrift stores! Pirates are a classic costume seen during Halloween. At Housing Works, we found the perfect dress and shoes for a pirate. With these basics, you can dress it up further however you want. Bandanas from the thrift store, corsets, or truly anything your heart desires! These are just three ideas, but the number of options one can make from the thrift store is limitless. With costumes like these, different clothes can be swapped in or mixed and matched, which makes your costume so unique! Even using clothes you have at home with different accessories or combined with options from the thrift store can help make Halloween less wasteful while still fun!… PreviousNext For Businesses & Nonprofits Latest Exchange Listings All Listings Available Powerhorse 3400 PSI Pressure Washer (BROKEN)… Manhattan Expires in 29 days Available Sanitizer Stands… N/A Expires in 6 days Available FREE 22 Plastic Child-Size Chairs… N/A Expires in 2 days donateNYC Partners AGENTCY COLLECTIVE ART START BIG REUSE BIKE NEW YORK BOP SHELL COLLECTION PROGRAM BOTTOMLESS CLOSET BROOKLYN BOOK BODEGA CITY HARVEST, INC.
