years ago today. Bly set a deadline based on Jules Verne’s novel Around the
World in Eighty Days and completed the trip in slightly more than 72 days. While
her journey captured the public imagination, Bly was equally well known as an
investigative reporter who went undercover to expose the inner workings of a
prison, an asylum, the human trafficking market, and political corruption, to
name a few.

Whenever the U.S. government transitions to a new administration, the
speculation among politicians and financial pros kicks into high gear. With
Donald Trump securing reelection, the epicenter of speculation seems to be
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which blew past all-time highs this week.
Britannica Money breaks it down.

Is the SEC warming to crypto?

When cryptocurrencies emerged about a decade ago, part of their allure stemmed
from blockchain, a decentralized transaction-ledger technology that promised to
revolutionize digital payments, contract negotiations, and asset security.
Crypto investors (“HODLers”) are betting that the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) will work more to ease crypto adoption. The SEC approved a
slate of crypto ETFs in 2024 but has focused more on rooting out market
manipulators and crypto scams.

Meme coins and the stories they tell

Meme coins, such as Dogecoin (ticker symbol DOGE), introduced in 2013, are
digital currencies inspired by literal memes or other cultural phenomena. Unlike
stocks tied to company earnings or bonds with fixed interest rates, these coins
lack intrinsic value. Rather their worth is driven by a joke, narrative, or
expectation that there will always be another buyer should you wish to sell.
President-elect Trump’s recent announcement of an Elon Musk-led Department of
Government Efficiency (which could use the acronym DOGE) has given meme coin
speculators a new narrative—and Dogecoin investors a 100 percent return on their
investment in the last week alone.

Inflation: Hedging with gold and crypto

Although inflation has ebbed considerably since 2022, it’s still higher than
pre-pandemic levels. And the 10-year Treasury note yield—often viewed as a proxy
for future inflation—has risen 80 basis points (or 0.8 percentage points) since
September. Traditionally, gold and other precious metals have served as reliable
hedges against inflation, helping to protect portfolios from losing value. But
in recent years, cryptocurrencies have emerged as a potential “digital gold.”
Like gold, they’re mined and there’s a finite amount, but crypto is still highly
volatile.
