UOTTAWA ‘COME WALK IN OUR MOCCASINS” INDIGENOUS

Indigenous Mini-Med Info-Registration 2020

The Indigenous Program at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine
is pleased to announce the upcoming sessions of our “Come Walk in Our
Moccasins” Mini-Medical School. “Come and Walk in our Moccasins”
is a one-day event designed to support and encourage First Nations,
Métis and Inuit people to apply to our Undergraduate Medical Education
Program. An information and registration package is attached.

We have scheduled two sessions of the Mini-Med School for winter 2020.
The first session, on Saturday January 25, 2020, is intended for
post-secondary students and adults. The second session, on Saturday,
February 22, 2020, is geared to students in Grades 7 to 12, and youth.

Focusing on one aspect of human health, Mini-Med participants will learn
how doctors:

•Do a medical history and physical exam

•Put on a cast

•Suture or do stitches

…And, we will visit the anatomy lab (optional).

The Mini-Med school includes participation by a local Elder and explores
the importance of integrating Indigenous culture into health care. Our
Indigenous medical students will share their personal journeys to being
accepted into medical school and their experiences in the MD program.
Dr. Darlene Kitty, our Indigenous Program Director, will talk about what
it’s like to be an Indigenous physician practicing in the Cree
community of Chisasibi, as well as the many other opportunities in the
profession. Everyone will receive a certificate of completion at the end
of the day.

Both sessions will be held at University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine,
Guindon Building, 451 Smyth Rd., Ottawa, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There
is no registration fee to attend this one-day mini-medical school. A
continental breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. Please note that
all participants are responsible for their own travel and
accommodations.

The deadlines to register are as follows:

FOR THE JANUARY 25 SESSION (POST-SECONDARY/ADULTS), PLEASE REGISTER
FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 2020.

FOR THE FEBRUARY 22 SESSION (HIGH SCHOOL/YOUTH), PLEASE REGISTER BY
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2020.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT COMMITTEE: PARTICIPATE IN YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION!

A parental involvement committee gives you an excellent opportunity to
play an active role in your child’s school. Parents of First Nations
students can create a parental involvement structure that values the
community’s need, goals and priorities.

ADVANTAGES TO A PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT STRUCTURE:

 * Information and feedback
 * Event organization
 * Training for parents
 * Consultation
 * Open discussion

If your school currently has a parental committee, or any parental
involvement structure, feel free to contact its members. They will be
happy to answer your questions and suggest ways you can get involved!

If your school does not have a parental involvement committee, discuss
your interest in creating one with the staff or other parents.

THE FNEC CAN HELP YOU AT ANY STAGE IN THE PROCESS:

 * Setting working meetings to discuss the current situation in parental
   involvement in your community, suggest any improvements, identify priorities,
   make an action plan
 * Setting up a parental involvement committee/structure
 * Drafting documents
 * Training for parents
 * Helping for any of your project in parental involvement

Remember that by getting involved, you are showing your child that
school is important to you, and that you and the school form a
partnership.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY! KANYEN’KÉHA SPEAKER

We recognize the importance for our young children to hear language from fluent,
first language speakers.

Help us help our children nurture a love for Kanyen’kéha!

Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na is seeking a fluent/highly proficient Kanyen’kéha
speaker to work in our
preschool program beginning September 2019. Ideally the candidate would be
available for a 30-hour work
week (6 hrs/day, 5 days/wk), however part-time employment (2-3 days/week) will
be strongly considered.
Accommodation and travel expenses can be negotiated with anyone from outside of
Kenhtè:ke.
The position would work alongside the Teacher to provide a Kanyen’kéha speaking
environment to the children
and to reinforce the oral language of the second language speaking teacher.

This is NOT a teacher position, but rather someone with a love of young children
and Kanyen’kéha.
