OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias and Its Executive Council Delegation Pay
Virtual Visit to China
Updated: September 16, 2022 23:55

On September 15, 2022, Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition
of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fernando Arias, Chair of OPCW Executive Council Ziyad
Bin Maashi Al-Attiyah as well as permanent diplomatic envoys or representatives
of Russia, Malaysia, Kenya, Cameroon, Mexico, Brunei, the United States, Germany
and other countries to the OPCW paid a virtual visit to China regarding the
destruction of Japan's abandoned chemical weapons (ACWs) in China.
Director-General of the Department of Arms Control of the Foreign Ministry Fu
Cong, Director of the Office for the Disposal of Japan's Abandoned Chemical
Weapons in China Dong Fengming, Director of the Office of Arms Control and
Implementation Affairs of the Office for International Military Cooperation of
the Central Military Commission Guo Hongtao, among others, participated in the
event.

During the visit, all the participants were briefed by China and Japan on the
overall situation and destruction progress of Japan's ACWs in China, took a
virtue visit to Haerbaling, Dunhua City, Jilin Province, the largest burial site
of Japan's ACWs in China, and had an in-depth exchange of views on accelerating
the destruction process. China demands that Japan earnestly fulfill its
obligations as the country that abandoned the chemical weapons, and
comprehensively, completely and thoroughly destroy its ACWs in China at an early
date. All parties support accelerating the destruction process of Japan's ACWs
in accordance with the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and will
work for the early realization of "a world free of chemical weapons".
