Welcome to Mbale Network of Young People living with HIV/AIDs - MNYPA

QUALITY LIFE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING WITH AND AFFECTED BY HIV AND AIDS

Mbale Network of People Living with HIV was started by a group of enthusiastic
young people living with HIV after realizing high numbers of young people who
were losing lives because of poor drug adherence caused by stigma and
discrimination. This made them to participate in the regional Y+ Beauty Pageant
a campaign aimed at fighting stigma and discrimination among young people. This
was a turning point to step up advocacy. and later young people through their
leader Mweru Peter organized themselves to form district network that will offer
a platform to other peers.
On Sept 1st 2017, MNYPA was born

YOUNG MOTHERS CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR LEGAL AND UNSAFE ABORTION IN
MBALE CITY.

On 27th September 2021 Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS-MNYPA
in partnership with Uganda Youth and Adolescent Health Forum- UYAHF and PACE
held a successful participatory Young Mother’s Anti- Stigma Club meeting at
UYAHF ADH Clinic on ending stigma around safe abortion and teenage pregnancy.
Namatala is one of the wards in Mbale city known for teenage pregnancy, SGBV,
unsafe abortions and early marriages. To address some of challenges young people
under Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS and in partnership with
UYAHF, PACE and Eastern Region Youth Network on SRHR and Gender equality held a
participatory Young Mother’s Anti- Stigma Club meeting on Ending Unsafe Abortion
Stigma, Teenage Pregnancy, SGBV and Early Marriages. The interactive and
participatory Young Mother’s Anti- Stigma Club attracted 45 mothers and girls at
high risk of Sexual Gender Based Violence, HIV infection, Teenage Pregnancy,
Unsafe Abortions and Early Marriages. The meeting aimed at creating a platform
for experience sharing and learning between Adolescent girls and young women and
health care providers on basic concepts of safe motherhood, proven strategies to
prevent Teenage pregnancies and strategies to protect girls from Sexual and
Gender Based Violence. The meeting was graced by the Team Leader of Uganda Youth
and Adolescent Health Forum Mr. Mwesigye Patrick who is a global SRHR Champion
under the SHE DECIDES Movement. During the session, girls pointed out stigma,
Misconceptions and lack of information on sexual reproductive health services as
a leading cause to low uptake of family planning services hence causing
unintended pregnancies. Young people spoke against biases from health workers
which discourage them from using family planning services. Additionally, the
cultural norms was sighted as one of the causes of gender inequality and in most
cases undermining women’s body and ability to make informed own decisions. After
the sessions health worker providers at UYAHF Adolescent Health Clinic took
young people in understanding concepts of safe motherhood which included issues
ranging from family planning including different types of family planning,
possible side effects and how to address them. The workers emphasized the need
to attend antenatal visits, delivering from a health facility under the care of
a qualified health provider. Additionally the health workers equipped the young
mothers with information on exclusive breast feeding, routine immunization, good
feeding and detection of early signs warning of pregnancy. In the way forward,
young people called for; 1. Team leader UYAHF pledged to continue offering a
safe space through the UYAHF youth hub for young mothers to share freely. 2.
UYAHF pledged to offer free youth friendly family planning services to all young
mothers. 3. PACE to support formation of community based Anti-Stigma Clubs
supported by UYAHF change Champions and Mbale Network of Young People Living
with HIV/AIDS. 4. Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS to conduct
Community Outreaches meant to increase demand, availability, access and uptake
of sexual reproductive health services and information.

MNYPA ANTI-STIGMA CLUBS

In a bid to scale up HIV/TB prevention and treatment for young people, MNYPA is
working with PACE to establish anti- stigma cubs at both facility and community
level. Yesterday we had our fist club meeting with adolescent and young women of
Namatala HCIV in Mbale district. This club is dedicated to enroll other peers
into the programme, they elected their leadership and a young mother in the name
of Kakayi Anita merged as a club chairperson. This club will help to link young
people to care for HIV, TB and Sexual Reproductive Health services through a
number of facility and community activities aimed at attracting young people.
MNYPA will be working with PACE to establish the other clubs in Bumandada at
Bumandada HCIII, In Busiu at Busiu HCIV.Among the activities clubs will be doing
includes conducting Youth community outreaches offering integrated youth
services like TB screening, HIV testing and counselling, STI screening, Family
Planning, GBV screening among others. The programme will support young people
with vocational and other skills like liquid soap making, reusable pads making,
candle, bakery among others.

and young women in community to respond to increased cases of Gender Based

women raised during the meeting included lack of safe space to report GBV, lack
of GBV safe house to protect women who are GBV survivors and local leaders who
discourage women from reporting their husbands perpetrators of GBV. During the

Y PLUS (Y+) BEAUTY PAGEANT PROJECT

×

UNYPA and its district regional network MNYPA implements The Y+ Beauty pageant
which is a unique model campaign promoting beauty with “Zero Discrimination”
fighting stigma and discrimination against young people living and affected with
HIV.

The pageant takes place annually and builds a brand of Y+ ambassadors to re-echo
their voices and change the perception that comes with living with HIV and AIDS.
The Y+ model turns-around stigma into pride to promote inclusiveness and
acceptability of HIV+ persons in society and focuses on beauty and not on the
challenges the young people living with HIV face. It creates a platform of
learning and showing communities their (inner) beauty and therefore enabling
YPLHIV to become champions in the fight against stigma and discrimination.
All YPLHIV that take part in the Y+ Beauty Pageant Campaign are referred to as
Ambassadors of Change right from the national/regional auditions. After the 3
months campaign, the ambassadors are commissioned to participate in different
activities like; community dialogues, national celebrations like World AIDS Day
in their communities and on national level to front different issues that affect
their fellow YPLHIV. It creates a platform of learning and showing communities
their (inner) beauty and therefore enabling YPLHIV to become champions in the
fight against stigma and discrimination. All YPLHIV that take part in the Y+
Beauty Pageant Campaign are referred to as Y+ Ambassadors of change right from
the national/regional auditions. MNYPA coordinates Y+ Beauty Pageant Regional
activities in five (5) districts of Eastern Mbale, Bududa, Manafwa, Sironko and
Bulambuli
