SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

Tourism has a huge impact on nature, climate, culture and economy – both
globally & locally. It’s often exploitative and does more harm than good, but we
can start changing this now.

At Haltia Lake Lodge we take our part very seriously. All of our operations run
on 100% wind energy, utilise little to no plastic and benefit a wide range of
local operators. We recycle everything, build and renovate using circular
economy and aim to be carbon neutral in 2025. Stay with us and have a positive
impact.

Best Sustainable Hotel: Europe 2022

The winners of Boutique Hotel Awards 2022 were announced on 8th November 2022.
Haltia Lake Lodge was named Best Sustainable Hotel: Europe. The judges applauded
Haltia Lake Lodge for its beautiful natural setting and thoughtfully sustainable
approach. Once a council dormitory building, the Lodge itself has been
transformed into a luxurious sanctuary in the tranquil Finnish forest.

Background on the Awards & Awards process

The Boutique Hotel Awards is the first and only international awards
organisation exclusively dedicated to recognising unique excellence among
boutique hotels.

The hotels and private villas are tried and tested, giving the judges first-hand
experience of what makes them special. Each and every property is visited
personally by an experienced hotel judge, who specialises in each category, and
where decisions on winners depend on true guest experience at the property.

The winners were selected from over 250 Nominees in over 70 countries. Entrants
are nominated each year by a member of the Awards Nomination Committee,
comprising 30 leading travel experts, whose business it is to be ‘in-the-know’
concerning the extraordinary boutique hotels. The Awards then coordinate judge
evaluation visits with each shortlisted nominee. The judges document all aspects
of the guest experience covering elements of dining, design, concept,
facilities, location, service and, most importantly, emotional impact. Finally,
these evaluations are meticulously studied by the Awards Panel, which decides
the Award winners.

Haltia Lake Lodge has been awarded the Green Key environmental certificate as
per the 1st October, 2021. With environmental certification, our guests can make
more environmentally sustainable choices and reduce their own carbon footprint.

The Green Key award is the leading standard for excellence in the field of
environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism
industry. This prestigious eco-label represents a commitment by businesses that
their premises adhere to the strict criteria set by the Foundation for
Environmental Education. A Green Key stands for the promise to its guests that
by opting to stay with the Green Key establishment, they are helping to make a
difference on an environmental level. The high environmental standards expected
of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and
frequent audits. Green Key is eligible for hotels, hostels, small
accommodations, campsites, holiday parks, conference centres, restaurants and
attractions.

Sustainable Travel Finland

In February 2022, Haltia Lake Lodge received the Sustainable Travel Finland
label awarded by Visit Finland.

The idea of Sustainable Travel Finland programme is to provide companies and
destinations with a sustainable development path; a concrete toolkit for
sustainable tourism that makes it easier to adopt sustainable practices and
choices in the everyday business. Companies and destinations that undergo the
entire programme are recognised with the Sustainable Travel Finland label and
will have access to a continuous development model, the latest information on
sustainable tourism development, and marketing support and visibility on Visit
Finland channels.

Hotels for Trees

In February 2022, Haltia Lake Lodge became the first property in the Nordics to
sign up for Hotels for Trees. This initiative enables our guests to compensate a
part of the CO2 impact of their journey and strengthens the sustainable efforts
of Haltia Lake Lodge.

The Hotels for Trees Foundation contributes directly to a greener hotel world. A
hotel world in which one new tree is planted each time a guest chooses to skip
the daily room cleaning. The impact of this green choice can be seen on the
Hotels for Trees website the very next day and directly contributes to
(re-)forestation projects of partner Trees for All across the globe.
