THE WHY.

For years, there has been talk. Meetings have been held. Community leaders have
spoken out. Commissions have formed and organizations have taken on the cause.
But the issue of workforce housing not only remains here on Florida’s Gulf
Coast, it has also worsened.

Suncoast Housing NOW was created to address the problem of Sarasota-Manatee
workforce housing today. This begins right here and now, where we provide key
resources, hold policy makers and influencers accountable for their promises,
and ensure that those whose work keeps our communities running can also call
this area their home.

By visiting this site, you are taking a step towards positive change in our
community for the working class.

KNOW THE FACTS

MYTH:

Increasing rent and home prices only affect low-wage earners, people in the
service industry and those who have entry-level jobs.

FACT:

Many working professionals have become unable to afford Sarasota-Manatee rent
and home costs, including healthcare workers, teachers, police officers,
firefighters, office workers – jobs that our community depends upon to be
economically viable.

THE WHO.

Workforce housing (also known as middle-income or moderate-income housing) is
housing for individuals and families typically earning between 80% and 120% Area
Median Income (AMI), including healthcare workers, first responders, teachers
and government employees.

The Sarasota-Manatee area has a critical shortage of available workforce
housing. This refers to the “missing middle,” individuals and families who earn
too much to qualify for state or local assistance, but not enough to afford
housing in the communities where they work.

THE WHAT.

Rent prices are growing four times faster than income. Local, hardworking people
are living paycheck-to-paycheck, skipping meals and running out of ways to
afford rent.

In June 2022, Sarasota-Manatee area housing prices have trended upwards 43.4%
year over year, pushing new, working-class homeowners out of the market.

As a significant concern in the Sarasota-Manatee area, the need for attainable
workforce housing is difficult to deny. The solutions require champions and
advocates to amplify the message, directly address the issue and make our region
livable for those who keep our economy running.
