ARTS AND CREATIVITY - AUGUST 2024

Art and faith have walked hand in hand for thousands of years, though
Anabaptists have historically valued well crafted words or music higher than
visual arts. And so we focus now on visual art.

We have more questions than answers sometimes. What do we connect with when we
create? What about when we observe or interact with art? Can beauty be a way to
God? How does the process of creating change us? Is beauty in the life of faith
a luxury or a necessity? How does art fit into a broken, hurting world?

“Attention is the beginning of devotion,” Mary Oliver writes. As we transition
from summer back to the rhythms of fall, let our attention rest on the Art and
Beauty around us.

SMALL GROUPS

Small groups are integral to the life of our congregation. They are the best
place for care and nurture of individuals, for support and accountability in our
faith journeys, for some stages of communal discernment, and for some types of
mission and outreach.

INCLUSION

As a reconciling faith community, we seek to follow Jesus’ example by welcoming
all who come our way, regardless of age, economic or social circumstances,
ethnic background, gender, marital status, physical ability, race, or sexual
orientation.

PRIVILEGES OF THE CHILD

We seek to keep children in the midst of our congregation, the responsibility of
all, to be known by name, to be valued persons in the congregation, and active
participants in worship.

THE ARTS

From four-part singing, to drumming, to visuals, to dance, the arts are highly
valued and central to our worship.
