WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?

WE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO NAVIGATE UNCERTAINTY AND FIND SUCCESS IN THE FACE OF
TODAY'S CHALLENGES.

It’s been difficult for everyone. We have all had to deal with uncertainty in
our own lives, and the social issues that have come to the forefront, have only
added to the challenges we face.

Uncertainty makes us nervous, and when we’re nervous we tend to grasp for
control. But we can’t manage uncertainty with measures of control.

But we CAN navigate these unknowns by changing the way we think about people and
what they can do. We can learn a new way of seeing people as individuals and
adapting our systems to honor their dignity and unleash them to achieve at their
fullest capacity. Together, we will examine the biggest trends in education and
business today:

The rise of environmental, social and governance (ESG)

ESG

The pursuit of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)

DEI

The urgency of prioritizing well-being for employees and customers

HOW TO NAVIGATE UNCERTAINTY

ADOPT A PROGRESSIVE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGY TO BE RESPONSIVE
AND COMPETITIVE IN TODAY’S HYPER-CONNECTED WORLD.

There is a growing trend among consumers and employees alike to support
businesses that are focused on making a positive impact on environmental and
social issues. Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of
the products they buy. Similarly, employees are more likely to engage with
companies that are considered to be good corporate citizens, and that stand up
for social causes they care about.

As society becomes increasingly aware of the level of uncertainty we face, many
companies are beginning to focus on their environmental, social and governance
(ESG) policies. With the rise of ESG, we are seeing a shift in corporate culture
towards greater responsibility and transparency.

TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION

TRENDS THAT ARE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ESG, DEI AND WELL-BEING.

 * Higher education

 * Workplace

 * Marketplace

 * Future generations

1.HIGHER EDUCATION IS TRANSFORMING. LEARN ABOUT THE CHANGES, AND WHAT THEY MEAN
FOR YOU.

Reskilling has become a popular topic in recent years as the pace of change in
the workplace continues to accelerate. With technology evolving at an
unprecedented rate, many adults find themselves in need of retraining or
"upskilling" in order to keep up with the latest trends and technologies.
Meanwhile, new career opportunities are constantly emerging in industries that
didn't even exist a few years ago.

In order to remain competitive, it is essential that higher education
acknowledges the pace of change and take steps to adapt our educational system
accordingly. One way to do this is by offering multiple streams and paths to
higher education, so that people can reskill as needed and put those skills to
work immediately. This will be essential in the years to come as we continue to
face unknowns and embrace digital transformation.

2.THE GREAT RESIGNATION IS REAL, BUT IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO ACT.

The term ‘The great resignation’ denotes the unprecedented level of employees
who are actively seeking new opportunities outside of their current
organization. This shift is happening because workers don’t feel a sense of
belonging or investment in their company’s culture and mission. In fact,
according to the University of Phoenix, nearly 1 in 3 American adults would quit
their job if the right opportunity came along. However, 69% of those surveyed
said they would stay at their current job if things changed.

In order to attract and retain talent, organizations need to focus on creating a
workplace where employees feel a sense of purpose and have opportunities to grow
and develop. Reskilling initiatives can help to bridge this disconnect by
providing employees with new opportunities to learn and grow within their role.
In addition, organizations must focus on creating a culture of trust and
wellbeing in order to retain top talent. If organizations can create a positive
employee experience and build trust within the workplace, they will be more
likely to retain talented employees.

3.WHAT DOES DEI MEAN FOR YOUR COMPANY?

As awareness of social issues has increased, so too has the pressure on
organizations to take action. Consumers want to see companies making progress on
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), data security and privacy, among other
issues. While there is no doubt that these are important areas for focus, the
initiatives designed to address them can often be seen as cost centers rather
than growth opportunities.

With studies showing that organizations with a diverse workforce are not only
more innovative but also more profitable, DEI has become a key business priority
for many companies. In order to create a truly inclusive environment, however,
organizations need to do more than simply hire a more diverse workforce. They
also need to ensure that all employees feel like they are valued members of the
team and that their unique perspectives are welcome. Creating an inclusive
environment starts with an honest assessment of where the company stands in
terms of DEI, and then implementing specific initiatives that address any areas
of improvement.

4.UNIVERSITIES AND EMPLOYERS NEED TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE TO MEET THE
NEEDS OF TODAY'S STUDENTS.

Career expectations have changed dramatically in the past few years, especially
for students pursuing higher education. Students today want more freedom to
explore their capabilities and how they can make an impact. They don't want to
be confined to traditional, standardized educational paths--they want to be able
to pursue answers to big questions from multiple perspectives.

The influence of social media and higher access to information has changed the
way students see their future. Social media can be a valuable resource for
connection and information, but it can also be a source of anxiety and stress.
To prepare for these future leaders, universities and employers need to be more
flexible and adaptable. They need to be willing to offer opportunities for
exploration and growth, instead of confining students to one narrow path. And
they need to be committed to providing resources for mental health and
wellbeing. By understanding the changing expectations of today's students,
universities and employers can position themselves to better meet the needs of
future leaders.

Robert Johnson

President at Western New England University

Robert Johnson

President at Western New England University

Background

Dr. Robert E. Johnson was appointed as the 6th president of Western New England
University in August 2020, charged with leading the institution as it embarks on
its second century. His unyielding belief in higher education as a public good
and as a path for transforming individual lives has led him to dedicate his
30-year career to preparing students to adapt and succeed in a dynamic
future—one where jobs as we know them may no longer exist, career mobility is
the norm, and individuals are responsible for continuously adding and creating
new value.

A future-focused thought leader and commentator on issues centering around the
future of work, agile mind education, the agile university, and the sense of
humanity imperative, Dr. Johnson believes students, through higher education,
must develop divergent thinking skills, social and emotional intelligence,
empathy, and a sense of humanity. These uniquely human capacities cannot be
replicated by technology and, when paired with an entrepreneurial outlook and a
value-creation orientation, are the hallmarks of success in a complex,
hyper-connected world.

Recognizing that American higher education is at a unique juncture and that its
role will be fundamentally different from the past because we are in a period of
profound disruption, he views this as a catalyst for innovation and an
opportunity to make institutions more responsive to the needs of the future. A
Detroit native, Dr. Johnson was inspired to attend Morehouse College by his late
uncle Robert E. Johnson Jr., associate publisher and executive editor of JET
Magazine and Morehouse classmate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He encouraged Dr.
Johnson’s commitment to service and transforming the next generation of leaders,
influencing his fundamental conviction that humanity and civility must be
central to all we do.

As educated and engaged citizens on a planet with more than seven billion
people, we are privileged and thus have a social responsibility not only to
leave the world better than we found it but to inspire others to do the same.
Dr. Johnson is a member of the Council on Competitiveness and serves on its
National Commission on Innovation and Competitiveness Frontiers. He also serves
on the executive committee and is vice chair of the Massachusetts Business
Roundtable, the board of MGH institute of Health Professions, and the
Intentional Endowments Network steering committee. He has also served on the
Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, as vice chair of the Massachusetts
Technology Collaborative, and as chair of the Worcester Regional Chamber of
Commerce.

He is also co-founder of the Massachusetts Digital Games Institute.Dr. Johnson’s
leadership career spans nonprofit colleges and uni-versities in the Northeast
and Midwest, including public, private, urban, rural, small and large
institutions, with enrollments from 2,000 to more than 25,000 students. This
experience includes pub-lic research universities, one of the nation’s largest
single-cam-pus community colleges, a large Catholic university, a historically
Black university, and a turn-around and transformation of a small private
college.

His career reflects several firsts—as not only an African American leader but
also the youngest person holding major senior administrative roles.A proponent
of innovation and entrepreneurship, hallmarks of Dr. Johnson’s leadership
include elevating institutional stature and competitive market position;
national recognition; enrollment growth and resource development success;
fast-tracked facilities and infrastructure improvements; and innovating for
social impact when leading one of the first higher education institutions in the
nation to achieve a 100% social impact goal for its endowment. He has convened
transformational conversations with industry, government, and academe that
stimulated growth and regional economic opportunity, such as the 2010 Mass
Impact Summit that led to the creation of MassDiGI in 2011, and the annual
Marine Sci-ence and Technology symposium series at UMass Dartmouth that helped
launch the MERIT Center to support regional job growth and economic development
for the “Blue Economy.”

Dr. Johnson holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Touro
Univer-sity International, formerly a division of Touro College, New York; a
master’s degree in education administration from the University of Cincinnati; a
bachelor’s degree in economics from Morehouse College; and a certificate in
applied neuroscience from MIT Sloan School of Management.

He is married to Michelle Jones-Johnson. They have two children, Jasmine and
Alex.Western New England University (WNE) is a private, nationally ranked,
comprehensive institution with a focus on preparing work-ready and world-ready
graduates. Founded in 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts as a division
Northeastern College, WNE’s 215-acre suburban campus serves more than 3,700
students, including over 2,500 full-time undergraduates. More than 47,000 alumni

Scott Cole

Senior at University of Colorado Boulder at Leeds School of Business

Scott Cole

Senior at University of Colorado Boulder at Leeds School of Business

Background

My name is Scott Cole and I am a Senior at CU Boulder studying Operations
Management and Marketing in the Leeds School of Business. I was born and raised
in Orange County, California but have moved to Boulder, Colorado where I am
enjoying my college years in the mountains. In my free time, I’m an active
tennis player and enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and snowboarding.

Outside of school I have become passionate about working and serving the
community as an Emergency Medical Service provider and Technical Rescuer. This
past summer, I spent my time on an ambulance as an EMT-IV with American Medical
Response. I was thrilled to progress my operational and medical skills, driving
with lights and sirens through the streets of Denver to administer patient care
to those in need.

Similarly, I am an active, on-call volunteer with Boulder Emergency Squad, a
volunteer search and rescue organization in Boulder County. As an interagency
organization, BES assists the Boulder Fire Department and Boulder Sheriff’s
Department with rescue techniques including: Swiftwater rescue, wide-area
search, extrication, rope rescue, and dive operations.

I continue to love the “always changing” and versatile environment both of these
industries bring me each day.

Lorna Rodriguez

Professor and Vice Chair of Surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center

Lorna Rodriguez

Professor and Vice Chair of Surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center

Background

I am a gynecologic oncology surgeon and Vice Chair of Faculty Development in the
Department of Surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center where I also serve
as part of the Enterprise Leadership Team. I am also a Professor in the Division
of Gynecologic Oncology. My research focuses on finding a cure for ovarian
cancer and understanding the importance of racial and ethnic differences in
clinical outcomes. I have served as a clinician, instructor and researcher at
several of America's leading medical institutions over the past 30 years.

I am part of the City of Hope team working to increase diversity and equity as
it pertains to employees in our center as well as to patients and the delivery
of health care to undeserved groups and ethnic minorities. My goal is to
identify gaps in care delivery to vulnerable populations in our community and
improve the outcomes of their personalized treatments.

Most of all, I am a surgeon that wants to cure women's cancer by removing it
when possible. Sometimes, I have to add chemotherapy drugs to attain the goal
for a cure and work with my radiation oncology colleagues when radiation is the
best answer. Doing surgery allows me to learn more about the cancer because I
encounter it face to face. When I have to prescribe chemotherapy for my
patients, I have a photograph in my mind of what I saw at surgery and somehow I
feel that I have insights about "the personality" of that specific patient's
cancer that others do not have...
I was recently selected to participate in the prestigious Carol Emmott
Fellowship program and my work has been featured in numerous magazines, journals
and two books, including Precision Medicine Oncology from Rutgers University
Press. I am a frequent speaker for conferences related to health and wellness,
diversity in healthcare, and cancer research, and I have mentored many
postdoctoral fellows over the years. My commitment is to serve as a role model
to diverse students and encourage more of them to pursue a career in healthcare.
