WHAT IS A PREMIUM TOUR?

Higashi Honganji is a magnificent temple located just north of Kyoto Station.
There are 23 important cultural properties here, including the Goei-do Hall, the
Amida Hall, and the Goei-do Gate, and the beauty of traditional Japanese temple
architecture is apparent here.

However, Higashi Honganji's appeal is not limited to its appearance.
The interior features a Western-style building and boasts a unique architectural
style that incorporates elements of modern architecture.
Furthermore, just a five-minute walk from Higashi Honganji Temple is the
beautiful garden of Shosei-en, an exclave of the temple grounds.
This garden also offers soothing natural beauty.

A special experience tour will be held to discover the cultural value and charm
of Honganji Temple.

As part of the "Project to Promote the Use of Attractive Cultural Assets from
Around the Country" implemented by the Agency for Cultural Affairs this year, a
special experience tour will be held to further enhance the cultural value of
Higashi Honganji Temple and allow more people to experience its appeal.

This tour will start at the Kikumon Gate, an Important Cultural Property that
will be open for the first time in 25 years, and include a secret tour that will
provide a detailed explanation of the buildings within the temple grounds that
are usually closed to the public. In addition, through a boat ride in Shosei-en
Garden and a special Noh performance, this will be an opportunity for a limited
number of people to leisurely enjoy the history of Higashi Honganji Temple and
its charm as a cultural property.

This premium tour will take you into the deep history and beautiful culture of
Higashi Honganji Temple.

Enter the temple grounds through the "Kikumon" gate. This gate is not usually
open, but it was specially renovated for this occasion. The gate will be opened
for the first time in 25 years, and the special tour will start from there.

Miedo Hall, one of the world's largest wooden buildings

The Goei-do Hall, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, is an
important building located almost in the center of the temple grounds. After
praying at both the Amida Hall and the Goei-do Hall, we headed to a zone that is
usually closed to the public.

To a normally undisclosed zone

The tour will visit the Shiroshoin, with its folded coffered ceiling and
gold-dusted screen paintings, the elegant Miyagoten, which was relocated from
the former Omiya Imperial Palace, and Sakurashitatei, an elegant modern
sukiya-style building adorned with screen paintings by Maruyama Okyo.

There is also a secret behind the fountain in front of the Goei-do Gate. The
fire prevention measures unique to Higashi Honganji, which has suffered many
fires, are also a highlight of the modern architecture of the temple.

We walked to Shosei-en, an exclave within the temple grounds.

A special experience at the exclave of Shosei-en (boating)

You can enjoy the different seasonal scenery: plum and cherry blossoms in
spring, irises and water lilies in summer, and autumn leaves in autumn.

Following the scenery depicted in "Thirteen Views of Shosei-en"

Written in 1827 during the early Edo period, the book "Shosei-enki" describes
the beauty of the garden in detail. We will follow the scenery depicted in the
"Thirteen Views of Shosei-en" that appear in the book.

One way to enjoy the view is from a boat floating on Engetsuchi Pond.

"Noh in English" Noh performance

As Shosei-en was the former residence of Minamoto no Tooru, who is said to be
the model for Hikaru Genji, Kanze school Noh actor Kawamura Haruhisa will
perform "Tooru," a play based on the Tale of Genji.



This premium tour allows you to experience both the front and back of Higashi
Honganji Temple in 3.5 hours.

NIGHTTIME TEMPLE GROUNDS TOUR *THIS IS A ONE-TIME OFFER.

Those who wish to do so can return to the Higashi Honganji temple grounds after
the gates close for an evening tour.
After strolling through the quiet grounds, you will climb to the top of the
Goei-do Gate and enjoy the night view of Kyoto from the top of the gate. *Please
note that this is a steep staircase to climb at night, so we ask that those with
mobility issues refrain from participating.

The event will proceed in light rain, but will be cancelled if it is severe
weather.

OE KAKUJO

Kakujo Ooe

Deputy head of the Honbyobu department of the Otani-ha Shinshu sect (Higashi
Honganji Temple). Born in Oita Prefecture, he has lived in Kyoto for 14 years.
His hobby is watching boxing. Recently, he has been coming to understand the
charm of Noh.

Noh actor

HARUHISA KAWAMURA

Haruhisa Kawamura

Born in 1956. He was taught by his father Kawamura Haruo from an early age and
made his first stage appearance at the age of three. He studied under the 13th
master Hayashi Kiemon. He is active mainly at the Kawamura Noh Stage in Kyoto.
In addition to performing, he studied the history of Noh and completed his
graduate studies at Doshisha University. He has served as a part-time lecturer
at Kobe University, Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School, Kyoto Koka
Women's University, Kinki University, and visiting professor at Doshisha
University. In 2005, he spent a month and a half in the United States and Canada
as a cultural exchange ambassador for the Agency for Cultural Affairs. He has
lectured and performed at many universities and art museums, including Harvard
University, for cultural exchange. He has also given many classes and lecture
demonstrations in English overseas. In 2020, he received the Kyoto Prefecture
Cultural Award for Merit.
