It has been 19 years since the late Professor Szabolcs Nyiredy, one of the founders of the Journal of Planar Chromatography in 1988, organised the final International Symposium on Planar Separations (Planar Chromatography 2005) as part of an annual series. A pre-conference workshop, invited lectures, oral and poster presentations will be part of the scientific programme. The meeting will include an international exhibition of manufacturers. The social programmes will aid in the networking of young scientists and senior experts. HPTLC 2024 will provide an opportunity to discuss challenges, experiences, improvements in methods and practises, and state-of-the-art layer chromatography technologies. Participants from academia, industry, and research institutes are encouraged to submit papers on any aspect of high-performance thin-layer chromatography, including theory, method development, validation, data analysis, qualitative and quantitative applications, and hyphenated techniques. We want to expand on the CHROM-ART concept that was launched at HPTLC 2022 in Ljubljana. So we're looking for captivating and inspired images with unusual art-like visuals acquired during HPTLC analysis to enter a competition for a people's choice award. Budapest, Hungary's capital, has almost 2000 years of history and a rich cultural heritage. Central European University is located downtown, along the Danube River, with a wonderful view of the castle hill, and is conveniently accessible by public transportation. We hope to see you in Budapest in 2024 for a successful and pleasant gathering. On behalf of the Organizers, Ágnes M. Móricz and Márton Baglyas Plant Protection Institute, CAR HUN-REN Further information: moricz.agnes@atk.hun-ren.hu There is a high demand for new bioactive compounds in human and animal therapy and plant protection. The search for bioactive compounds needs trustworthy methods for the detection of the desired bioactivity. The combination of (HP)TLC with subsequent bioactivity assays allows the detection of biological effects of separated individual components of complex samples, such as various natural products that are popular sources of new drug candidates. (HP)TLC–bioactivity assays are widely used for the visualization of antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and enzyme inhibition properties of the analyzed substances. In the workshop we will cover principles of HPTLC–bioactivity assays and the parameters to consider to obtain valuable bioautogram will be discussed. Furthermore, experiments (HPTLC–antioxidant assay, HPTLC–Bacillus subtilis antibacterial assay, HPTLC–lipase inhibitory assay) will be performed by involving the participants. Remains from both Roman occupation and much later ruled by the Turks can still be seen in the city. After the Ottoman Empire the union with Austria has a particular influence on the city's form and style. The capital has two sides, Buda and Pest, stretching along the banks of the Danube, representing two different characters of the city. Suburban Buda and its historic castle district offer medieval streets and houses, museums, caves and Roman ruins. The dynamic Pest side boasts the largest parliament building in Europe, riverside promenades, flea markets, bookstores, antique stores and café houses. Budapest has a lot to offer. Museums and galleries, churches and synagogues, palaces and historic buildings, baths and pools are presented together with the influence of Secession in the city. There is an unmistakable feeling that something out of the ordinary is just around the corner, but what it will be is up to you to find out...
