Whether these nervous system changes are brought about due to repeated bingeing
episodes with large quantities of food, vomiting behaviors that increase saliva
production, or some other unknown factor, is unclear. When this occurs, for
whatever reason, the parotid grands hypertrophy, or increases in size, to allow
for increased saliva and/or salivary protein production.

The gland receives both sympathetic innervation (“fight or flight”) and
parasympathetic innervation (“rest and digest”) which becomes dysregulated. The
exact cause of parotid gland enlargement with bulimia remains unclear. Located
on each cheek, just below the ear and above the jaw, the parotid gland’s primary
job is to produce saliva to aid digestion and other bodily functions. The human
body contains three salivary glands, including the parotid gland. In other
instances, parotid gland enlargement persists for months or years following a
full recovery from the eating disorder.

In some cases, parotid gland enlargement subsides once the bulimia behaviors
have stopped. When an individual who is already self-conscious about their
appearance develops swollen cheeks, it can be highly emotionally distressing.
The binge eating behaviors can trigger calorie restriction or purging behaviors,
with vomiting contributing toward the development of sialadenosis. They may
place a great deal of emphasis on their appearance, become fixated on body
weight and may even suffer from body dysmorphic disorder. Individuals living
with bulimia often suffer from frequent feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem.
It is estimated between 10-66% of bulimia patients may develop parotid gland
enlargement, depending on the number of daily self-induced vomiting episodes.
Caused by the enlargement of the parotid glands (one of the salivary glands),
the medical term for this phenomenon is sialadenosis. One of the telltale signs
of bulimia is the appearance of swollen cheeks – colloquially known as “chipmunk
cheeks” – on the sides of the face. “Chipmunk Cheeks”: A Common Sign of Bulimia
Complications and their severity are highly dependent on the severity of the
eating disorder and how long the behaviors have been occurring. Purging refers
to episodes of self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative abuse and
other methods intended as a means of weight loss.īulimia can lead to a number of
distressing and damaging medical complications. Binge eating refers to eating a
large amount of food in a short amount of time, often accompanied by strong
feelings of guilt or shame. The primary behaviors associated with bulimia
nervosa include binge eating and purging. Additional life-threatening medical
complications may also be present and eating disorder treatment should be
sought. The development of swollen cheeks with bulimia is a sign that an
individual has been living with their eating disorder for quite some time. While

Given a chance, and if a leopard were hungry enough, they may try to bring down

does not have support from other giraffes, then hyenas are likely to eventually
bring it down.īut the risks are high, a single kick from a giraffe delivered in
the right place can kill instantly. Hyenas are able to prey on giraffes with
some degree of success, partly through numbers, as they often travel around in
packs, but also through attrition, because they can be relentless in probing and
attacking the giraffe from all angles. Assuming the hyenas want to take on a
giraffe. If the giraffe is closer and slow, then they may be more susceptible to
attacks from a pack of hyenas. Hyenas will be discouraged to engage in a lengthy
chase given that they still also need to bring down the giraffe at the end of
it. If the giraffe is a sufficient distance ahead of the hyenas and can maintain
its top speed for long enough, then it may be able to outpace the hyenas.
However, a hyenas top speed is around 40mph. Giraffes are relatively fast
animals when they run at full speed, reaching speeds of 37mph.

scooter, crashing Leap's invitations and was assistant conductor of Mrs. In A
Tad Too Much, he made too many fibs. Tad, the youngest of the siblings, is a
mischievous brother to Leap, but he is always a fun child to have around the
frogs.

of course, he is willing to learn everything from his siblings when he grows up.

You could try to get by with a PoE injector and a standard ethernet switch (or
the switch built into your router or broadband gateway), but Powershades
recommends using a purpose-built PoE switch. What you will need is a PoE switch
to inject voltage into the cable. If the installer is covering the roller with a
valance or a curtain, on the other hand, that should cover the LED.

If you buy these shades, have the dealer rotate the motor so that the LED faces
the wall and is out of your line of sight. The manufacturer tells me the flashes
are used for status reports and troubleshooting purposes, but the end user
shouldn’t need to be concerned about that. You might find the multi-colored LED
on the motor side of the roller to be annoying, as it constantly flashes red and
green. Since I didn’t have any ethernet cables terminated in female RJ45 jacks,
I stuck an RJ45 coupler on the stub cable, plugged a longer ethernet cable into
that, and left it trailing down the side of the window frame. I didn’t even go
to that much trouble for this evaluation. For a more polished look, you’ll want
to install a plate with a female RJ45 jack in the window frame, but all you
really need to do is drill a hole large enough for the RJ45 jack on the shade’s
stub cable to pass through. Since it’s DC power, you don’t need an AC adapter to
power the shade’s motor. Should you need to cover more distance than that, a
secondary power source can be provided mid-span. PoE is a low-voltage tech, so
anyone can string an ethernet cable from your router to your window (the cable

from the end of the shade’s roller, where the motor is located. Installing an
outlet there means hiring a licensed electrician to do the work, after which

outlets in the heads (the top horizontal strip) of your window frames.
