A new database tracking international trade in non-plastic substitutes is now
available on UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) online Data Hub. Such
materials can be minerals, wood pulp, or natural fibres like cotton, bamboo
and seaweed. They can be used to make more environmentally friendly versions
of the shopping bags, utensils, rappers and other plastic products we consume
daily. The database comes as United Nations-led negotiations are underway in
Busan, the Republic of Korea, to develop a global treaty aimed at ending
plastic pollution to safeguard human and planetary health. These negotiations
will be a hard test of the political will needed to tackle this global threat
to all life on Earth. The database allows users to track evolving patterns of
global trade in non-plastic substitutes based on export values reported by
   member states. Full story: https://ow.ly/kCTC50Uic84 #INC5 #PlasticsTreaty

UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s new report reveals significant growth
opportunities at the Port of Suape in Northeastern Brazil, identifying 141
high-potential products across six key sectors, including electrical
equipment, chemicals, and vehicles. The analysis shows how Suape can
diversify into higher value-added industries, reducing its reliance on
primary commodities and expanding export capabilities. These 141 products
represent an estimated export potential of US$ 141 billion, offering
substantial economic benefits. Achieving this potential will require an
investment of approximately US$ 2.24 billion, directed towards
high-complexity products that could transform Suape’s economic profile. With
this investment, Suape has the potential to increase regional GDP by 3.14%
and formal employment by 4.54%—a remarkable boost for the local economy and
workforce. The report demonstrates how harnessing economic complexity can
drive growth, generate jobs, and strengthen export competitiveness. Discover

Global trade in non-plastic substitutes is largely dominated by developed
economies, shows a new database tracking international trade in non-plastic
substitutes available on UN Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) online Data Hub.
Geographically, Asia and Europe lead global non-plastic substitutes exports
in value terms (each taking a 37% share), backed by strong intra-regional
trade. Africa's participation is notably small, currently under 3%. Beyond
environmental benefits, the shift towards non-plastic substitutes can
catalyze efforts to bolster and diversify exports, create quality jobs and
enhance productive capacities. But many developing economies lack the
necessary technologies and capacities to produce value added products on a
large scale. UN Trade and Development supports innovation in developing
countries through its Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution
(SMEP) programme. Full data story: https://ow.ly/kCTC50Uic84 #INC5

Exports of plastics or goods made from plastic, valued at a record high of
$1.2 trillion in 2022, continue to loom large in international trade. But as
markets increasingly prioritize sustainability, non-plastic substitutes are
gaining ground. In 2022, global exports in non-plastic substitutes reached
$831 billion in value, growing 30% faster than that of plastics trade. In
terms of value distribution, raw materials – primarily minerals and natural
fibers derived from forestry resources as well as seaweed – account for two
thirds of non-plastic substitutes trade. Finished products, in comparison,
only comprise the remaining one-third share, signaling a need for incentives
towards more value-added activities in the sector. Full data story:

Against the backdrop of rapid digital transformation and globalization, the
need for effective consumer protection and dispute resolution mechanisms is
increasingly critical, experts said at a recent webinar hosted by UN Trade
and Development (UNCTAD). New data from 43 countries, representing about 75%
of global GDP, show business e-commerce sales grew nearly 60% from 2016 to
2022, reaching $27 trillion – according to UNCTAD’s latest Digital Economy
Report. The rapid digitalization of global trade brings tremendous
opportunities but also challenges, particularly in protecting consumers in
   cross-border e-commerce. Full story: https://ow.ly/o6Sz50Ui64K

Fashion with a peel: How crop waste is making sustainable textiles and
creating jobs. The #WeeklyTradecast looks at how we can make sustainable
fabrics and other materials recycled from agricultural waste with UN Trade
and Development (UNCTAD) economist Henrique Pacini. For every banana or
pineapple we eat, much of the plant is discarded during harvesting or
processing. But this trash can be treasure. Transforming waste from bananas
and pineapples into dresses and sneakers may seem farfetched but these
eco-materials could help offset the environmental damage from fast fashion.
Listen in to UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s Henrique Pacini to find out
how these innovative fibres not only promise to reduce plastic and other
synthetics but are also creating new jobs and economic opportunities. Full

Plastics, increasingly viewed as the future of fossil fuels, are dominating
global discussions on sustainability and environmental degradation. As one of
the leading UN-led conferences on plastic pollution convenes to create an
international legally binding international agreement, UN Trade and
Development (UNCTAD) highlights the untapped potential of organic residues in
combating plastic pollution and driving sustainable development. UNCTAD has
analyzed trade flows under the Global System of Trade Preferences (GSTP),
revealing that residues and waste from the food industry rank as the third
most traded agricultural product amongst developing countries. This trend
highlights their growing importance in South-South trade and their untapped
potential to foster a circular economy and advance sustainable development.
“Regrettably, organic material and plastics are often mixed, and this lack of
separation robs us of value addition opportunities,” says Henrique Pacini,
who leads UNCTAD’s work at the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental
