Virginia Reyes’s brother, an ex–political prisoner of dictator Augusto Pinochet,
was killed in an apparent robbery. Yet nothing of value was taken. The police
have declared the case closed, but Virginia suspects that things aren’t quite as
they appear and turns to Heredia for help. Heredia couldn’t agree more—but he
can’t shake the feeling that there’s something Virginia’s not telling him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ramón Díaz Eterovic is one of the best-known writers of crime stories in Chile,
where the adventures of his private investigator Heredia are enormously popular.
They’ve been adapted into the graphic-novel series Heredia Detective and a TV
series, Heredia y Asociados. In 2009, Díaz Eterovic became the subject of the
documentary El rostro oculto en las palabras (The Hidden Face in Words).
Díaz Eterovic is also the author of The Fires of the Past and The Music of
Solitude and has published forty novels, short-story and poetry collections,
graphic novels, and children’s books. He has received Gijón’s Salón
Iberoamericano del libro Las Dos Orillas prize, the Chilean National Cultural
Board Prize, the Santiago Municipal Book Prize, the Francisco Coloane National
Narrative Prize, and the Altazor Arts Prize. His work has also been published in
numerous countries, including Chile, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Croatia,
Argentina, Mexico, France, Holland, and Germany.
Díaz Eterovic lives in Santiago, Chile, with his wife, Sonia, and their three
children.
Patrick Blaine is an associate professor of Latin American cultural studies at
Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. He earned his MA and PhD in comparative
literature from the University of Washington. He specializes in Chilean and
Argentinian literature and film and has written extensively on these subjects.
In 2000, Blaine moved to Santiago, Chile, where he taught English at the
Instituto Chileno-Norteamericano de Cultura and worked as a commercial
translator and interpreter. Before returning to the United States, he studied in
the Universidad de Chile’s graduate literature program. Blaine frequently
returns to Chile with his wife, Mónica, and son, Sebastián.
As a translator, Blaine has published English translations of essays by Angel
Guido and Jorge Ruedas de la Serna, as well as a Spanish translation of his own
essay on Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán. Dark Echoes of the Past is his first
novel translation.

A translator and scholar, Patrick Blaine (1976) was born in Washington, D.C.
and grew up in Western Pennsylvania. He spent one year in San Sebastián,
Spain and three in Santiago, Chile before beginning PhD studies in
comparative literature at the University of Washington, specializing in the
Southern Cone. He has written and translated literary and film criticism
(LOM, Duke, LAP), and is a member of ALTA (American Literary Translators
Association). He makes his home in Eugene, Oregon, where he lives with his
wife Mónica and son Sebastián. Patrick Blaine currently works as the Dean of
Languages, Literature, and Communication at Lane Community College.

Heredia is a private detective working in Santiago. Things are slow until his
girlfriend introduces him to Virginia, who wants him to investigate the death of
her brother. The brother, Reyes, was killed in the course of a robbery, but
Virginia thinks there is more to it.
Heredia takes on the case and soon turns up the fact the Reyes was a political
prisoner during the Pinochet regime. Things get murkier from there, as he seeks
to unearth an ugly past that plenty of people would like to forget.
This could have been quite a grim novel, but Eterovic manages to write with a
light, almost breezy touch. Heredia loves to read, which enables the author to
sneak in references to his favourite works. Heredia also discusses the case with
his cat, who answers back and gives him advice. This is not your ordinary
detective fiction; it's a skilful blend of noirish themes with a pacy and crisp
narrative style and a touch of magic realism.

I chose this book from Kindle First hoping to find something a bit different - I
was not disappointed! I was a little apprehensive about the translation from
Chilean and there were some sentences that I felt could have been better worded
but that really is a very minor point. I liked the steady pace of the story and
warmed to the main character, Heredia, despite the slightly unusual concept of
the dialogue with his cat. Heredia treads a path through the seedy underbelly of
Santiago as he goes about his business but I fear for his lungs and his liver on
account of the fact that if he's not smoking, he's most likely drinking! The
subject matter, the former dictatorship and the associated brutalities, is one
I'm not familiar with but it offers a good basis for the story. The manner in
which the Melgoza character opened up/confessed was a little too convenient and
accounts for the deduction of 1 star from my review. All-in-all, an enjoyable
read.
