COMMUNITY VOICES

BRENDA AND GABRIEL

“We both work. My husband has a career. I work for a hospital, and yet we still
can’t make ends meet. We normally spend a certain amount, and now it’s like
there’s just no way we can even get the basics with that amount. We literally
had to cut out meat out of the entire diet. We can’t afford it. My son’s a first
grader, and since he was in kinder, we’ve been getting food here, and it has
helped so much. We keep the sheet on the fridge to see the date when you’re
giving out food. Whatever we don’t eat, we distribute around the family because
the economy is hard all around. Thank you. Thank you so much for the time. It’s
a relief.”

JON

“Work has been slow. I do pool servicing. My wife works at Grocery Outlet. She
tells me a lot of stories about how people can’t buy stuff. They end up having
to put it back because they didn’t know it went up that much. There was a time
that we lived out of our car. We have three kids. This is a big help for a lot
of people. Even though this is helpful, it’s still bad out there.”

ERIKA

“I’m a single mom of three. I’m the sole provider of all of them.  I work
full-time, 39-40 hours a week. It’s a set check, but it just goes directly to
bills. The main thing that scares me is not being able to pay rent because if
that’s the case, I wouldn’t have a roof for my kids. If we weren’t able to have
programs like Feeding San Diego, we’d probably be in a terrible situation. You
have to provide for them, and if you have to make sure that you give up your
plate for them, you do. You are there for them. That’s your main goal. I just
want to make sure they are well fed and have what they need to keep going.”

TYLER AND JEWEL

“We both came [to San Diego] in different routes. She’s originally from Vegas,
and I’m from Missouri. We met in one of our training schools, and it was both of
our first duty stations. Coming to San Diego for the first time, especially me
not being from a big city place, I guess as far as population and expense wise,
it was definitely a big shock, especially the past couple of years when you had
the gas prices go up, and all of the food and everything just went up. Luckily
the Navy helped supplement that with our BAH, but sometimes it’s still, you
know, not enough. Even as a dual enlisted household, sometimes we’re still
living paycheck to paycheck. We have a little boy. This definitely helps with
our grocery expenses because that can go towards our child’s daycare because
daycare now is going up. Anything that we can get for help is a blessing to us.
We’re very, very grateful for everything.”
