On this particular afternoon, a man was standing to the side of the busy street, picking up large chunks of wood and throwing them at cars as they drove by him. Was it dangerous? Yes. Could someone have been hurt? Absolutely. Was it sad to see someone in such a troubled state? Definitely. Was he mentally ill, or on Meth, or both? Very possible. But none of that was what truly bothered me on that beautiful summer day. It was my own reaction. A shrug. Resignation. After all, something like this happened every day in our little corner of the Golden State. It was typical. Another afternoon in Oakland. Another day in the Bay.Another dystopian moment in the state that once defined the “good life.” » ARE YOU POST-PROGRESSIVE? Take a 2-minute test of your post-progressivism, and see your “transcendence and inclusion score.” This simple test asks you to select your level of agreement or disagreement with twelve political statements. Our Basic Approach in 100 Words Post-Progressivism in 700 Words Developmental Politics Course Clips WIN-WIN-WIN SOLUTIONS ISSUE OF THE MONTH: K-12 PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE U.S. The heart of the Institute for Cultural Evolution’s approach to all its political issue positions is a focus on development—the development of our collective culture, and the development of each individual person. Guided by this principle, we believe that the best education policy is one that empowers schools to foster the growth of each child’s “whole person,” thereby laying an educational foundation that can result in lifelong learning and continuing development throughout adulthood. This position paper, however, does not address the best way to educate children. Rather, it focuses on the politics of education and the best way to ameliorate the problems faced by America’s public school systems. » OUR INVITATION TO ALL SIDES Post-Progressivism welcomes anyone, from anywhere on the political spectrum, willing to dialogue and seek solutions in good faith. Find Out How To Join POST-PROGRESSIVE POST BLOG FEEDBACK ON THE EDUCATION WIN-WIN-WIN ISSUE POSITION BY JOSH LEONARD Editors Note: We received some thoughtful questions and concerns about our recently published Education Issue Position, and would like to share our response publically in the spirit of dialogue and open inquiry. Question 1: How will enabling the pursuit of different sets of beliefs and values in different schools assist in teaching people to listen to one another and find common ground and learn civics? How will separating and isolating differences teach children to consider points of view other than their own? Answer: Considering that many public schools have already been captured by progressive ideology that tends to devalue finding common ground and developing civic pride, these proposed changes would not be likely to make this situation worse. » POLARITIES ON THE LEFT & RIGHT This series of graphics shows how America’s three major worldviews—progressive, modern, and traditional—map onto the familiar political spectrum of left and right. As journalist George Packer writes in The Atlantic Magazine, there are now “four Americas,” which he labels Just America, Smart America, Free America, and Real America. We identify these same categories as Caring Values, Fairness Values, Liberty Values, and Heritage Values. » DEEPER DIVE INTO OUR APPROACH Article: Toward a Post-Progressive Perspective Article: Why Centrism Fails Developmental Politics Book ABOUT The Post-Progressive Post (PPP) is a key initiative of the Institute for Cultural Evolution think tank.
