Title: 'People turn to me, broken: What's happening to our Israel?’8/11/2018 ● 8:32 AM It's almost cliché to say that the crisis between American Jewry and the State of Israel is unprecedented, but it’s only getting worse. The Nationality Law, the Surrogacy Law, and the detention of Rabbi Haiyun has sunk the liberal Jewish community into deep depression.

Title: Israel to ease some Gaza restrictions; Bennett opposes concessions to Hamas8/14/2018 ● 7:24 PM While Israel announced it will ease some Gaza restrictions amid a lull in violence, minister Naftali Bennett expressed disapproval of any potential concessions to Hamas. By: AP and World Israel News Staff Israel says it plans to ease some restrictions on the Gaza Strip as Egypt attempts to broker an end to months of violent Palestinian riots, Hamas rocket attacks and arson terror, and retaliatory strikes by Israel. A statement from Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s office Tuesday says that if a current lull in violence continues, Israel will resume full operations at a key goods crossing, the Kerem Shalom crossing, and restore fishing limits Wednesday morning. Israel tightened the restrictions earlier this month in response to incendiary balloons and kites launched from Gaza, which have sparked a wave of arson terror destroying thousands of acres of Israeli land to the tune of millions of dollars in damage. Israel and Hamas have come close to serious conflict in recent weeks after four months of violence along Gaza’s border following Hamas-organized rioting there. In response to the announcement regarding a potential long-term Gaza ceasefire agreement, Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett declared that his party would oppose the move, reported Times of Israel. While the cabinet is set to debate the ceasefire agreement on Wednesday morning, Bennett warned that a period of calm would provide the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, with a chance to prepare its next onslaught on the Jewish state. Bennett also expressed disapproval of Liberman’s comments regarding Israel reopening the Kerem Shalom crossing Wednesday morning provided the current truce on the Gaza border holds. Title: Corbyn shown at Holocaust-denier’s wedding8/14/2018 ● 6:37 PM Corbyn’s latest controversy is connected to his attendance at the wedding of a Palestinian diplomat who was subsequently accused of Holocaust denial, according to a report in the Daily Mail. By: JNS.org Controversial UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn attended the wedding in London in 2010 of senior Palestinian diplomat Husam Zomlot, who has since been accused of Holocaust denial, according to a report in the Daily Mail on Sunday. The Daily Mail featured a photo of Corbyn, then a Labour backbencher, apparently proposing a toast in Zomlot’s honor at the wedding. Zomlot was then serving in the United Kingdom, and was later named the Palestinian ambassador to the United States. In the same year, Corbyn also called Zomlot his “close friend” and thanked him for his contribution to an anti-Israeli group called the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. According to the Mail on Sunday, in 2014, Zomlot told the BBC that Israel was “fabricating” stories about the Islamic State beheading of journalists “as if they are fabricating also the story of the Holocaust, that it happened in Europe.” In another instance, Zomlot also said that Israel was established on the “skulls of our [Palestinian] nation,” and that it was carrying out an “ethnic cleansing campaign.” It is unclear if Corbyn ever distanced himself from those remarks or from Zomlot. Sunday’s report is the latest in a string of controversies surrounding Corbyn’s positions on Israel and Jews since he was elected party chief in 2015. In recent weeks, disturbing images of Corbyn and remarks made by him have come to light. Last week, a photo showed him placing a wreath at the grave of a Palestinian terrorist who masterminded the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. A Labour spokesman did not go out of his way to distance Corbyn from the Palestinian diplomat on Sunday. “Jeremy has been a longstanding supporter of Palestinian rights. He supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, and a negotiated settlement that delivers peace and security for both peoples,” said the spokesman. “Husam Zomlot is a leading Palestinian political figure and effectively ambassador to the U.S., having played the same role in Britain. He has made clear he is not a Holocaust-denier—and did so in the same BBC broadcast that is the subject of controversy. Jeremy attended his wedding in London in 2010, along with a wide range of British and other international diplomats.” The post Corbyn shown at Holocaust-denier’s wedding appeared first on World Israel News.

Title: Pipe bombs thrown at Rachel’s Tomb8/14/2018 ● 5:59 PM Pipe bombs were launched from the Palestinian side of Rachel’s Tomb in an apparent attempt to attack Jewish worshipers at the holy site. By: TPS and World Israel News Border police officers located two pipe bombs thrown in the vicinity of Rachel’s Tomb at the northern entrance to Bethlehem early Tuesday afternoon. The pipe bombs, thrown from the Palestinian side of the security fence at the spot, failed to explode. A police sapper neutralized the devices. In a separate incident, IDF troops arrested three Palestinians armed with pipe bombs near a Jewish community in Samaria on Tuesday, the army stated. A soldier monitoring surveillance equipment in the vicinity of Elon Moreh and the Palestinian village of Deir al-Hatab identified the suspicious activity, after which the three Palestinians were arrested. A search of the suspects turned up four pipe bombs, after which the men were transferred to the Shin Bet security service for questioning. The pipe bomb attempt at Rachel’s Tomb and the detention of the three additional pipe bomb-wielding Palestinians followed Israeli troops’ arrest of 21 Palestinian suspects and the discovery of an illegal Palestinian weapons manufacturing workshop, said the military. The arrests resulted in rioting in two Palestinian villages, which included rock throwing, Molotov cocktail hurling, and attempts to toss explosives at IDF troops. Title: Israel gets NIS 17.6 trillion valuation8/14/2018 ● 1:49 PM Publicly traded companies on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange are valued at over NIS 17 trillion, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon revealed. By: TPS The State of Israel is officially worth more than 17 trillion shekels or NIS 17,638,763,277,054 to be precise, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon revealed Tuesday morning as he opened trading on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE). To mark Israel’s 70th anniversary of independence earlier this year, the TASE conducted an initial estimate of the valuation the State of Israel would achieve if it were floated on the exchange. The valuation, using the methodology employed by the World Bank in a recent a survey of the valuations of 140 countries, found that Israel would be worth NIS 16 trillion – Israel was not included in the original World Bank survey. The valuation was then revised upward based on a questionnaire to the general public examining measuring human capital in the country. “A country that doesn’t grow is a country is a country in decline,” Kahlon said at the opening bell. “Growth is the answer to social, economic and security [needs]. Today we are at a debt-to-GDP ratio that is one of the lowest in our history. Low debt leads to strong ratings, a strong stock exchange and a strong economy. But economies are cyclical … and my job is also to prepare the economy for crisis. We must continue to lower our debt even though sometimes we are criticized for that. Low debt is important for the future of Israel.” The post Israel gets NIS 17.6 trillion valuation appeared first on World Israel News.

Title: Israel Uses PA Funds to Compensate Victims of Palestinian Torture8/14/2018 ● 5:27 PM Based on a court ruling, Israel is holding the Palestinians responsible for torturing their own citizens. By: United with Israel Staff A group of Palestinians, victims of torture at the hands of the Palestinian Authority (PA) who won a lawsuit filed against the PA in Israel, are starting to see justice. Israel recently deducted some NIS 1 million ($370,00) in tax revenues that it collects on behalf of the PA, which it will use to cover the medical expenses of Palestinians who were tortured by PA security services, Israel Radio reported Tuesday. Last year, an Israeli court for the first time recognized the torture of the Palestinians and ordered the PA to compensate them. The full amount of the compensation has yet to be determined. In the meantime, Israel is ensuring the court costs are covered, but hundreds of millions of shekels are expected to be awarded in damages. In January, Israel recently cut half a billion Israeli shekels ($145 million) from taxes it collects on behalf of the PA to partially cover the required compensation. The Palestinian government alleged that “this measure is nothing more than an Israeli piracy of Palestinian funds and is part of a policy to seize Palestinian tax revenues employed by the Israeli government.” Precedential Ruling Against the PA Last June, the Jerusalem District Court issued a precedential ruling according to which the PA is responsible for the physical and emotional injury caused to no less than 52 plaintiffs – Israeli and Palestinian Arabs suspected by the PA of “collaboration with Israel” – and charged the PA with their compensation. The court verdict published last July reveals an in-depth account of each of the plaintiffs and his circumstances. The resulting picture is one of widespread detentions throughout Judea and Samaria of those suspected of collaborating with Israel. The vicious torture described by the plaintiffs included beatings with metal wires and rubber pipes, cigarette burns, being hung for hours, and sleep and food deprivation. The plaintiffs testified that between 1990 and 2003 they were incarcerated for different periods of time, some of them held for years, suffering unimaginably brutal torture at the hands of their interrogators. As a result, the plaintiffs sustained severe damage to both their physical and mental health. Several of the victims subsequently died of their wounds or were executed without trial. The PA has refused to recognize the court’s jurisdiction over its affairs while denying that any torture took place within its facilities. The Palestinian security forces have previously come under fire from advocacy groups and Palestinian detainees based on egregious human rights abuse. Hamas is Burning Our Land. Title: Canadian TV Erroneously Claims Israel Destroyed Gaza ‘Cultural Center,’ Actually a Hamas HQ8/14/2018 ● 5:08 PM HonestReporting called on CTV National News to “issue an on-air corrective to remedy the erroneous and misleading statement it broadcast” that Israel destroyed a Gaza cultural center, when in fact the IAF conducted a strike against Hamas’ headquarters. By: United with Israel Staff HonestReporting Canada (HRC) filed a complaint with the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) on Friday after CTV National News aired a report which incorrectly claimed that Israel destroyed a Gaza cultural center, when in fact Israel’s Air Force (IAF) conducted a strike against Hamas headquarters used for military and terror purposes. Anchor Lisa Laflamme on Thursday falsely and unfairly stated that “Israeli aircraft bombed more than 150 targets in Gaza, flattening a major cultural center and leaving three people dead.” The facts are that Israel’s citizens in the south experienced a nightmarish evening on Wednesday and on Thursday when Hamas terrorists fired over 180 rockets at them, repeatedly setting off Code Red alerts that sent them running for cover. The Iron Dome defense system intercepted 30 rockets, while several of the explosive projectiles fell inside Israeli towns, causing injuries, some of them serious, and extensive damage. The IAF responded by attacking over 150 Hamas terror targets throughout the Strip, including a cement factory used by Hamas to build terror tunnels, a maritime terror tunnel shaft, a weapons manufacturing and storage facility, and several terror sites in military compounds, as well as the five-story Said al-Mishal Cultural Center in Shati, which has served as the headquarters for Hamas’ internal security forces. Hamas’s interior security unit is responsible for all security operations carried out inside Gaza and is considered to be an executive branch of Hamas’s political leadership. A significant part of the unit’s members are also Hamas terrorists, the IDF stated. On behalf of its 30,000 subscribers, HRC called on CTV National News to “issue an on-air corrective to remedy the erroneous and misleading statement it broadcast.” “At the very least, CTV News has an obligation to its viewers to mention that Israel regards the building as being Hamas’ headquarters whose forces use it for military and terrorist purposes. Failing which, viewers will be left to wrongly conclude that Israel targeted a civilian building used to promote culture,” HRC noted. “To some viewers, they may falsely conclude that Israel committed a war crime and had collectively punished innocent Palestinians in Gaza.” Israel is repeatedly faced with biased reporting by the international media and is often forced to fight for the truth. Title: Netanyahu Slams Corbyn for Honoring Murderous Palestinian Terrorists8/14/2018 ● 4:53 PM The laying of a wreath by Jeremy Corbyn on the graves of the terrorist who perpetrated the Munich massacre and his comparison of Israel to the Nazis “deserves unequivocal condemnation from everyone — left, right and everything in between,” Netanyahu stated. By: AP and United with Israel Staff British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is facing allegations of enabling anti-Semitism within his party, acknowledged Monday that he was present at a wreath-laying ceremony honoring Palestinian terrorists linked to the murder of 11 Israelis at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Over the weekend, the Daily Mail published photos suggesting that Corbyn laid a wreath and participated in a prayer at the graves of the Black September terrorists responsible for the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Having previously written about his attendance at the 2014 wreath-laying event, Corbyn claimed to have been at the graves of different Palestinian terrorists, but the Daily Mail uncovered photographs of Corbyn and sent a journalist to the cemetery, who discovered that he had been standing by a plaque at the graves of the Black September members. The left-wing politician — a longtime critic of Israel — has faced mounting criticism since the Daily Mail‘s expose. Corbyn previously claimed he was at the cemetery to commemorate the victims of a 1985 Israeli air attack on Palestinian Liberation Organization offices in Tunis. On Monday, he acknowledged a wreath had also been laid to “those that were killed in Paris in 1992.” PLO official Atef Bseiso, whom Israel has accused of helping to plan the Munich Olympic attack, was gunned down outside a Paris hotel that year. “I was present when it was laid. I don’t think I was actually involved in it,” Corbyn told reporters. “I was there because I wanted to see a fitting memorial to everyone who has died in every terrorist incident everywhere because we have to end it,” he said, apparently referring to a Mossad hit on a terrorist as a “terrorist incident.” The statement is unlikely to quell criticism from Jewish groups and Labour members who say Corbyn has allowed anti-Semitism to spread in the party. “Being ‘present’ is the same as being involved. … Where is the apology?” tweeted Labour lawmaker Luciana Berger. ‘Unequivocal Condemnation from Everyone’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted that “the laying of a wreath by Jeremy Corbyn on the graves of the terrorist who perpetrated the Munich massacre and his comparison of Israel to the Nazis deserves unequivocal condemnation from everyone — left, right and everything in between.” Corbyn responded on Twitter that Netanyahu’s “claims about my actions and words are false.” “What deserves unequivocal condemnation is the killing of over 160 Palestinian protesters in Gaza by Israeli forces since March, including dozens of children,” he added, referring to the Palestinians, mostly terrorists, killed by the IDF while committing attacks and violently rioting on Israel’s border. Corbyn has been accused of failing to expel party members who express anti-Semitic views and has received personal criticism for past statements, including a 2013 speech in which he compared Israel’s blockade of Gaza to Nazi Germany’s sieges of Leningrad and Stalingrad during World War II. The dispute recently boiled over after the Labour party proposed adopting a definition of anti-Semitism that differed from the one approved by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). Labour’s version omits some of the alliance’s language around criticism of Israel. The alliance’s definition says it is anti-Semitic to compare contemporary Israeli policies to the policies of the Nazis, a view Labour did not endorse. In the latest development, the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) revealed Monday that Corbyn’s 2015 campaign to become leader of the Labour Party was partly funded by Dr. Ibrahim Hamami of London, who is alleged to be aligned with Hamas, the genocidal anti-Semitic terrorist organization, and by retired Professor Ted Honderich, who stated in 2011 that Palestinians had a “moral right” to engage in terrorism. Title: How Israel is raising up a generation of ‘cyber warriors’8/14/2018 ● 10:05 AM This post How Israel is raising up a generation of ‘cyber warriors’ is via Kehila News Israel. JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett announced an innovative program for high school seniors interested in pursuing careers in software engineering, the Israeli daily Israel Hayom reported. The new program for the 2018-2019 school year will be closely coordinated with the Israel National Cyber Directorate in the prime minister’s office. It will train 100 seniors to become computer hackers and another 240 12th grade students to become cyber protectors. Israel has been on the cutting edge of cyber technology for years. In fact, the tiny Jewish state about the size of New Jersey, a leader in cyber security, has been keen on exporting its technological advancements to other countries. “Everybody understands that you buy Swiss watches from Switzerland and information security from Israel,” said co-founder and CEO of CyberArk Udi Mokady, reported NoCamels, which publishes news about Israel innovations. Participants in both programs will be taught by experts in the field of cyber technology and cyber warfare. According to the report, the curriculum includes extensive instruction on ethics and “permissible and prohibited conduct in the field.” At the end of the course next spring, students will analyze the cybersecurity systems at their schools and make their own recommendations on preventing information leaks. “For the first time, students in the education system will receive the tools to defend the State of Israel online,” Israel Hayom quoted Bennett as saying. “One of the greatest threats today isn’t necessarily military in nature, but rather digital,” Bennett said. “All the systems we use are controlled by computers; therefore, hacking them for classified information means real harm to Israel’s ability to function.” Bennett called the students “Israel’s cyber warriors,” saying they will stand alongside the IDF’s elite fighting forces in protecting the country. “They are the tip of the spear on the modern battlefield, and I trust them to courageously defend those assets that belong to all of us,” he said. At a cybersecurity conference in Tel Aviv in June, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged worldwide cooperation on cyber defense. “One of the greatest challenges facing humanity is securing our devices, our airplanes and our networks,” the Times of Israel quoted Netanyahu. “This is a supreme test for our civilization…We have to combine forces to protect the present and ensure the future.” At an annual CyberTech conference in Tel Aviv, Gen. (ret.) David Petraeus, former director of the CIA, said cooperation between Israel and the United States has reached “new heights time and time again, far beyond what is being published in the media,” NoCamels reported. “The technological developments are out running our strategic imagination,” he said. “It’s a huge challenge.” This article originally appeared on CBN News, August 13, 2018, and reposted with permission. Title: Women steadily rising in IDF combat ranks8/13/2018 ● 8:41 AM This post Women steadily rising in IDF combat ranks is via Kehila News Israel. JERUSALEM, Israel – Increasing numbers of women are opting for combat roles in the Israel Defense Forces. This year, 1,050 female soldiers joined combat units – up from 500 just three years ago – the IDF announced this week. While the IDF is pleased with the trend, it creates inevitable tension within the ranks, especially among the religiously observant. Brig. Gen. Guy Hasson, head of the IDF’s Armored Corps, sees the increase of women in combat roles as a plus. IDF women in training, Photo, IDF Facebook“We understand the potential in the operational value of both the Border Defense Forces and the Armored Corps. There is potential here for girls who really want to work for the defense of the state,” Hasson said. Israel Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin promoted the first female squadron commander and the first female air traffic controller. IDF combat soldier, Photo, IDF FacebookThere’s also a slow, but steady increase in the number of ultra-Orthodox men serving in the military. Some of them have been shunned by their families and communities for the decision. The IDF has invested a great deal of effort to accommodate their religious requirements. While the majority of religious girls choose national service (Sherut Leumi) rather than military enlistment, even that number is changing. A Knesset study released a little over a year ago showed 2,000 enlistments in 2015, up from 930 in 2010. This YouTube video, posted a year ago by zig123ize, shows how these young women train. But it’s not only religiously observant soldiers who have a problem with their female counterparts, especially as instructors. A basic tenet of Judaism calls for separation of men and women. At the Kotel (Western Wall), Photo, IDF FacebookA recent incident involving a female instructor illustrated the dilemma. During a teaching session, the majority of the class either looked away or turned their backs on her, YNet news reported. “This wasn’t a group of Haredim [ultra-Orthodox],” YNet quotes her as having said. “This is the abysmal reality.” In response to the incident, the IDF Spokesman’s Office issued a statement. “During a training lesson at the Paratroopers Brigade’s parachuting course, a female instructor demonstrated an exercise to the soldiers from a platoon consisting of Hesder Yeshiva students. Some 30 soldiers who did not wish to view the demonstration by a female soldier turned their heads. The unit’s commander told them afterward their behavior was unacceptable and any cadet who behaves “disrespectfully toward a female instructor will be removed from the course.” In June, the IDF proudly introduced the army’s first four female tank commanders. They’re joining a unit at the border with Egypt. This article originally appeared on CBN News, August 12, 2018, and reposted with permission. Title: Rocket barrage raises tensions in southern Israel8/9/2018 ● 7:56 PM This post Rocket barrage raises tensions in southern Israel is via Kehila News Israel. Israelis in the South were forced to relocate day camps to bomb shelters or close them altogether as nearly 200 rockets were fired at Israel in one day, injuring seven people and damaging buildings in the region yesterday. On Thursday afternoon an official in the Gaza Strip declared that the latest round of violence had ended early and that armed groups in Gaza would cease their fire and that it was up to Israel to do the same. “The current round in Gaza has ended. The resistance responded to the enemy’s crimes in Gaza,” a Palestinian official said. “The continuation of calm in Gaza depends on (Israel’s) behavior.” Despite the declared cessation of launches, Palestinians launched a brief round of rockets on Thursday afternoon including one that landed near Beersheba. This was the first time the southern Negev city — some 25 miles north of Gaza — was struck since the Gaza war in 2014 and shows that the militant groups in the coastal enclave have long-range missiles in their arsenal. The initial rocket barrage was triggered by the accidental killing by the IDF of two Hamas members after the army mistakenly thought the terror group was staging a cross-border attack. Hamas was running a military exercise at the time. The IDF had been anticipating a revenge attack. Israel’s Home Front Command cancelled summer day camps and agricultural work was prohibited. Public events were limited to 300 people and rail traffic between Ashkelon and Sderot was halted. Beaches and a local college were also closed. So far, the military has focused on targeting Hamas infrastructure while avoiding casualties, in an apparent effort to prevent further escalation of violence. Israel struck 150 terror sites in air strikes, the army said. Israeli officials indicated that they are prepared for a wider confrontation with Hamas if need be. “Whatever is needed to protect our citizens and our soldiers will be done, no matter what the price will be in Gaza,” said Housing Minister Yoav Gallant, who serves on the security cabinet. “Let’s hope for peace, and let’s be ready for war.” In recent months, Hamas has launched several one-day rocket barrages at Israel with more than 100 rockets in 24 hours each time. The rounds of violence have yet to escalate into full blown war as in 2014, but tensions have remained high in the border communities in southern Israel. One source of tension has been the constant stream of kites and balloons sent into Israel with incendiary devices attached to them. These seemingly innocuous objects have silently destroyed thousands of acres of farmland and caused millions of shekels worth of damage over the last few months. Since March, Palestinians have regularly demonstrated at the Gaza border. The demonstrations escalated to violent confrontations in May coinciding with the opening of the American embassy in Jerusalem. Since then, kites and balloons have continued flying over the border in addition to occasional 24-hour eruptions of rocket launches. Title: Startling reversal: Israel to export natural gas to Egypt8/7/2018 ● 5:13 PM This post Startling reversal: Israel to export natural gas to Egypt is via Kehila News Israel. JERUSALEM, Israel – Egypt is poised to begin importing natural gas from Israel early in 2019. The $1.5 billion deal signed last February will hopefully benefit both countries. Between 2011 and 2014, Islamic terror cells embedded in the Sinai Peninsula periodically attacked Egypt’s natural gas pipelines to Israel and Jordan. Security cameras caught some of the jihadists on film. Today, the situation is reversed. The importer and exporter have exchanged roles. “Imports will start in small quantities first and will gradually increase to reach their climax in September 2019,” Reuters quoted an anonymous source, who declined to provide details on the agreement. According to the report, the agreements call for Israel to transport 64 billion cubic meters of natural gas from two offshore fields – Tamar and Leviathan – to Egypt’s Dolphinus Holdings over the next 10 years. Watch the installation of the Tamar Platform. Half of the gas will come from the Tamar field, which has an estimated 238 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and the other half from Leviathan. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi believes the agreement will elevate Egypt’s status as an energy provider in the region. Since his election in May 2014, el-Sisi has devoted much of his time and energy to rehabilitating the economy. His first major undertaking was refurbishing and expanding the Suez Canal, projected to more than double its annual revenue from $5 to $12.5 billion. The ambitious project includes a new city, industrial areas, fish farms and other facilities. El-Sisi also called on Israel to help rout terror cells embedded in the Sinai. The government answered the call, allowing Egypt to deploy its troops to the Sinai under the watchful eye of the Israel Defense Forces. Egypt also clamped down on Hamas, destroying many of its tunnels dug near the Rafah border crossing to smuggle weapons and reinforcements to the Sinai terrorists. Egyptian mediators have been less successful in convincing rival Palestinian factions to reunite. Agreements have come and gone over the years. Egypt has also served as mediator in ceasefire agreements between Israel and Hamas. Despite political differences, Egypt and Israel’s 1979 peace agreement has remained intact, though most contact takes place behind closed doors. Title: The search8/14/2018 ● 8:55 AM This post The search is via Kehila News Israel. As we approach the month of Elul we traditionally get ready to search our hearts and to turn to our God. When we look at the word “Elul” it is similar to the root of the verb “search” in Aramaic. The Rabbis usually connect “Elul” to the idea of searching our hearts and preparing ourselves for the High Holy days. This year, however, I am struck with the idea that He, our great, sovereign, all powerful God, searches for us. We usually think about “pursuing God” but what we forget about is that He has always been on a quest to find us, restore us to Himself and have intimacy with us. We are the ones who are on the run, running away from Him. Whether it is our shame from the state that we are in or our rebellion we tend to turn away from God. If we look at Luke 15:3-5, we see the dilemma God has with us, “And He told them this parable, saying, ‘What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.” Arnold Fruchtenbaum in, “Yeshua: The Life of Messiah from a Messianic Jewish Perspective” notes that, “The emphasis of this parable is on being lost because of the sheep’s tendency to stray.” This is the difficulty that God has with us because we wander away, straying away from Him. Even though He is the good shepherd and will protect us, feed us and care for us, we don’t realize the depth of His love. As we continue to look at the word “Elul”, traditionally there is an acronym of “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li”, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine,” from Song of Songs 6:3. This acronym lays out an important truth that is sometimes difficult for us to believe, and that is, we are the beloved’s and He is ours. Notice that we are His possession first. In 1 John 4:19 it says, “We love, because He first loved us.” Even though we have strayed away He continues to search for us. The quest to find us by God is because we are a loved and prized possession. In Luke 15:8-10 Yeshua tells us a second parable, “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’” In this parable it is not enough to have the nine coins, she engages in a search to find the tenth coin and labors by sweeping to find it. Just as a broom sweeps the dust into a pile and then is lifted off the floor, our God has swept us and drawn us to Him. In Jeremiah 31.3 it says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.” This love that our God has for us is an unmerited love. It is a love that “extends to the heavens” (Psalm 36:5). The following story is a true story that gives us a glimpse into the love that I’m talking about. My sister told me that a local road in my town was backed up with traffic which was unusual. Horns were being honked and people were starting to get out of their cars. Then my sister saw what was causing the problem. There in the middle of the road was a sandhill crane flapping its wings, circling it’s mate that had been hit by a car. The injured crane lay crumpled on the ground and not moving as its mate circled it and let out shrieks that made the people around them shiver. It would nudge the injured crane and then lift up its head again and shriek. There was no consoling this crane as it mourned it’s mate. Death would separate them forever. When my sister told me this story my eyes filled with tears as I thought about the awful separation of these birds. The heartbreak that this crane felt as it mourned it’s mate is just a small taste of what our God feels when we reject Him and choose our own way. He wants us to choose Him! He doesn’t want you and me to keep running away from Him but, to run towards Him. During this month of Elul let us stop running and come before Him with open hearts to the one who never stops searching for us. This post The search is via Kehila News Israel.

Title: Sin: What is it?8/13/2018 ● 9:11 PM This post Sin: What is it? is via Kehila News Israel. The Hebrew word for sin is khet, which is the word used on a firing range when a target is missed. The opposite of the wordkhet is torah, which means the standard of instructions for hitting the targeted objective. The three-letter Hebrew root of that word torah is yara, which means to shoot in a direction, the same root as mora (teacher), and hora (parent), and horaot (instructions). Torah is often poorly translated as Law (which is in Hebrew, khok). This is well understood by such writers of the New Testament as Yohanan (1 John 3:4), who wrote “Whosoever commits sin (khet) transgresses the Law (torah), for sin (khet) is the transgression of the Law (torah).” Sin is not only a single act of stealing or committing adultery, but is a direction travelled. It is a dynamic movement that may begin with a single step in the wrong direction, but then will most assuredly lead to a second step in that direction, and ultimately to a voyage culminating by incremental changes in catastrophe. The Ten Commandments (in Hebrew: the Ten Words) inform us that the process proceeds from the first generation to the third and fourth generations and, if not repented, to destruction. The first generation took the first step in the wrong direction, away from the Light, whose behavior then is inherited to the next, and by the third the sin has become a normalized lifestyle, and by the fourth, near to irredeemable chaos of darkness, ripe for the consequences of judgment. This principle is also illustrated in Israel being held in Egyptian captivity until the fourth generation, until the sin of the Amorites came to its fullness (Genesis 15:16). Perhaps one of the best illustrations of this process appears in Spielberg’s film Back to the Future. There we have a marvelous story of events occurring in a normal small California town in the 1980’s, until Doc comes up with a time machine. His time travel with young McFly to that same town in the 21st century is thrown into skelter when a bad fellow, Biff, discovers and takes an almanac tossed into the trash that tells of all the sports wins of the 20th century. Biff travels back to the 1950’s and gives his younger self the almanac, and the young bad Biff becomes a multi-millionaire. When doc and McFly return to the quiet town of the 1980’s they discover a totally different town of violence and corruption, led by the rich Biff. Then Doc discovers they were now in their alternative town, and the only way to change history back was to take the time machine to the 1950’s and get the almanac from the young Biff, bringing salvation by preventing that disastrous outcome. Which finally they succeed in doing. It is like the Bible’s description of the Jerusalem that is above, and the Jerusalem which is below: sin has created the alternative Jerusalem, until the Heavenly Jerusalem descends from its upper dimension. It is the miracle of grace in the Messiah’s crucifixion and resurrection in the fallen alternative Jerusalem of the 1st Century that the inevitable catastrophic course may be stayed and turned and re-directed back to the Light of life and health. The dark consequences of sin are taken into that sacrificial Lamb of God, the merciful divine provision for the forgiveness of sin, a healing and new beginning available to individuals and nations, if they so choose. Come, let us return to YHVH. He has torn us to but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. – Hosea 6:1-2 This post Sin: What is it? is via Kehila News Israel.

Title: Endangered Spanish Jewish Community’s SOS8/14/2018 ● 1:38 PM A tiny Jewish community in Las Palmas, Spain is endangered and threatened with closure. Spain’s entire Jewish population is comprised of 13,000 – 50,000 Jews, although this community in the Canary Island’s capital numbers only about 15 people. “We had about 50 families around the time of the High Holy Days in 1997,” said Dr. Paul Brami, Vice President of the Jewish Community of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – and also its chazan (cantor) and Baal Koreh (Torah reader). He and his family moved from France to Las Palmas, via Lanzarote in 1995. As with many communities, emigration (mostly to Canada and Israel) and attrition rates due to old age, meant a steady decrease in the community’s numbers. “Our “Rabbi, a wise and accurate Talmudist, passed away near 2 years ago,” Brami added. The tiny community is hospitable, welcoming travelers who vacation on the island and go the synagogue in search of a minyan (prayer quorum) or a meal. Despite this, on a week-to-week basis the synagogue struggles to get enough people to sustain a prayer service on Shabbatot (Sabbaths) and Holidays. The island also has no kosher store, butcher or mikve (ritual purification bath). Individual community members do what they can – including bringing food from Madrid and sometimes from Israel. And because Gran Canaria is an island, one is permitted to use the sea as a means of purification, even though there is no designated ritual bath. The Jewish Community of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a Zionist one – in which many of the elder’s children have made Aliyah – but they keep their allegiance quiet (there isn’t even a sign pointing out the community’s whereabouts). “There is a large muslim community, most of them from Morocco and Southern Sahara and Mauritania, but also some from Syria and Lebanon and many Palestinians,” Brami explained. The community did run a website, but now its creator maintains a Facebook page, Judios en Canarias (Jews in the Canaries). He added that the small Jewish community has good relations with local Spaniards, who do not consider them a threat, as well as a good relationship with the local newspaper La Provincia. The threat to the community’s viability stems from the location of their synagogue. Since 1993, the community has paid rent on time every month. At one stage the owner proposed that the community bought the apartment, but there was never enough money available for that to be a viable solution. And now, the owner would like to sell the apartment for 200,000 Euros ($228,000). Brami would be delighted if a donor would come forward, purchase the apartment and rent it out to the community. “Another idea is to get a sponsor that could buy it and donate as a philanthropic gesture with the condition we should donate back the money to any organisation the sponsor likes,” he added. One of the most interesting parts of this story is they way that Dr. Brami got in touch with Breaking Israel News. Having seen a recently posted video about a Dutch synagogue being forced to close its doors, he reached out with the community’s story. Brami is sanguine about the community’s fate arguing that “perhaps it is the destiny of all small communities to disappear.” There is something poignant though, about the potential further diminution of the Spanish Jewish community. The country has to an extent not recovered from its expulsion of Jews (and also its Muslims) – it would be a shame to pass up the opportunity to save a tiny community hanging on for dear life.

Title: Shooting Themselves in the Flag8/14/2018 ● 12:49 PM There wasn’t one protest on Saturday night, but two. One was of those who waved the Palestine flag, mostly in defiance. They are not seeking equality or coexistence, but the rejection of Israel’s right to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people. The second protest was of those protesting the discrimination and fighting for equality, and they think the Nation-State Law is going to make their situation worse. The first group wants to deepen the conflict; the second group wants change through legitimate protest. The great majority of Israeli Arabs vote for the Joint List, whose leadership supports the former group. This leadership provokes. This leadership rejects Israel’s right to exist. This leadership’s comments and actions lead to slogans being shouted such as: “In spirit and in blood we’ll save you Palestine.” And on Saturday night—what a shame—these slogans were being shouted at Rabin Square. On the other hand, all of the polls conducted in recent years indicate that 50-53 percent of Joint List voters support the definition of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. They don’t support every foolish thing the party’s leadership does, just like Likud voters don’t support every irksome declaration of constructions outside the main settlement blocs and/or outside the separation barrier. Voting for a party is about identity, not about agreeing with every statement. The protest organizers asked not to wave Palestinian flags. They wanted to appeal to the Israeli public. It was a worthy decision. Because anyone who waves the Palestine flag at this protest is there to show defiance against Israeli flags, supports Palestinian nationalism and opposes Jewish nationalism. But when one of the speakers at the protest, Amos Schocken, was asked about the flags, he was a lot more empathetic. Instead of joining the organizers in urging protesters not to wave Palestinian flags, he found explanations and justifications. It’s safe to assume some Jews will also find a variety of justifications to the calls of “In spirit and in blood we’ll save you Palestine.” Despite the Joint List leadership, despite the slogans being shouted—we must listen to the moderate voices, and those exist. We need to come toward those who demand equality and integration, exactly as we need to stop funding to those who praise the martyr and murder culture in the name of “the freedom of art and expression.” In practice, the current government is actually doing more budget-wise than all governments that preceded it. The five-year plan for the Arab sector is already underway. It’s not just a massive investment in infrastructure, but also in affirmative action. And it bears fruit. Many Israeli Arabs are successfully undergoing Israelization and not Palestinization. More Arabs are entering the fields of high-tech, pharmacy and medicine. They are equal and loyal and don’t need an oath of loyalty. The road to full equality is still long, and it goes through not only budgets, but also feelings. They need to feel like Israel is home. And a small change to the Nation-State Law—introducing an article about equality—will not hurt the justification of Jewish nationality, but it will improve the current climate. The way to equality, it’s important to note, also includes equality in duties—primarily national service—because the Haredim and the Arabs will never be equal without becoming part of the shared ethos that includes not just acceptance but also giving. On Saturday night, Rabin Square saw both abusers and those demanding equality. The first are the enemies within. The latter are partners. We need to listen to the latter—both for their sake and our own. Reprinted with author’s permission from YNet News.com

Title: Rabbis Weigh In: Who Is Amalek Today?8/14/2018 ● 11:41 AM Rabbi Nir Ben Artzi, a prominent Israeli mystic, gave a sermon that was published on Sunday. In it, he referred to Hamas as “the seed of Amalek.” Amalek was the grandson of Esau whose descendants became a nation infamous for attacking the Hebrews after they came out of Egypt. The archetypal enemies of Israel, Torah commands the Jews to wipe out the memory of Amalek. Therefore, when Hashem your God grants you safety from all your enemies around you, in the land that Hashem your God is giving you as a hereditary portion, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget! Deuteronomy 25:19 This commandment requires killing all the men, women, and children, anywhere and at any time. Rabbi Ben Artzi stated that, as the “seed of Amalek,” this commandment applied to Hamas. A pro-Hamas rally in Ramallah. (Credit: Wikimedia Commons)“When they cry ‘ceasefire,’ it is just like in the Ten Plagues when Pharaoh was stubborn until he got a plague, relented, and then returned to being stubborn until the next plague. This continued until the plague of the death of the firstborn and finished him completely.” Like Ben Artzi, many rabbis throughout Jewish history have conjectured as to the identity of Amalek with the title frequently being placed on the worst enemies of the Jews. Breaking Israel News asked several rabbis their opinion: Liberalism: Amalek’s Rejection of Life Rabbi Pinchas Winston, a prolific author and end-of-days expert, has written several books on the subject of Amalek. “There is no real purebred Amalek today since, according to the Talmud, King Sennacherib mixed up the nations,” Rabbi Winston told Breaking Israel News. “This means that we cannot point at any one nation and say that they are Amalek. It also means that Amalek has gotten mixed into the other nations and a little bit of Amalek is in everyone.” “Amalek is more than a physical people. It is also a concept and a spiritual reality. Different people can embody that concept. First and foremost, Amalek is doubt in divine providence. According to the midrash (homiletic teachings), after killing Jewish men, Amalek cut off the brit milah (circumcision) of the male Jewish casualties and threw them up at heaven. They were saying that there is no room in this world for a covenant with God.” “Atheism is an extreme form of Amalek. The second thing that Amalek does is that they are willing to kill themselves in order to bring that about. The Nazis clearly did this. Much of liberalism today is like that. They are killing themselves spiritually, politically, and even physically. When a person says that they are not going to speak to members of their own family because they disagree with their ideology, that is a form of spiritual suicide, saying that the ideology trumps all. That does not make them from Amalek but it is a trait of Amalek.” “Amalek wants life to be forfeit. Liberalism is the focus of Amalek today. This is why they will say that abortion and homosexuality, actions that detract from life, are moral imperatives. It is not a coincidence that liberals are atheists. Liberalism is what happens when you take God and meaning out of life. Ultimately, liberalism is idolatry. It is making God in the image of man, making man the ultimate authority, freeing him to do what he wants. The Golden calf is the liberal movement in action. They made a god, imbued him with powers, so that under his rule, they could do what they want.” “They don’t hate life; they have no idea what life is. They are leading a meaningless existence. They need to tempt death to confirm that they are living. When a person gets to this point, Amalek has won.” “People who acknowledge a covenant with God, his existence and presence in this world, they appreciate life as a gift. They also have meaningful things to do with their lives. We are hardwired to want eternity and to seek meaning.” “Liberalism claims to be the avenger of justice and truth. They reject discussion and other opinions. That is because Amalek in gematria (Hebrew numerology) is 240, equal to the word safek (doubt); they want you to doubt what you know is clearly the word of God.” “Amalek puts emotions over the intellect. ‘I want it’ becomes more important than anything. Abraham was given the strength to conquer Amalek through the test of offering up Isaac, by putting aside his emotions to do the will of God. Judaism, which is based on the chesed (loving kindness) of Abraham, is intellect over emotions.” Amalek: Leading the Nations to Hate Israel Rabbi Yosef Berger, the rabbi of King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion, believes that Amalek exists in the world today, in individuals and also in nations. “Without direct divine guidance, it is impossible to say with certainty who is Amalek,” Berger told Breaking Israel News. “Therefore, it is forbidden to perform the commandment. But each person must ask himself if he has the traits of Amalek.” “Amalek is a symbol, it is a character trait. Amalek came to kill Israel after they saw all the wonders Hashem did for us when we came out of Egypt.” “The Torah says they came upon us by happenstance.” How, undeterred by fear of Hashem, he surprised you on the march, when you were famished and weary, and cut down all the stragglers in your rear. Deuteronomy 25:18 Rabbi Berger quoted Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, an 11th century French Torah scholar who is known by the acronym “ Rashi”, who explained the verse. “An expression denoting heat and cold (קוֹר). He cooled you off and made you appear tepid, after you were boiling hot, for the nations were afraid to fight with you, just as people are afraid to touch something boiling hot. But this one, came forward and started and showed the way to others. This can be compared to a bathtub of boiling water into which no living creature could descend. Along came an irresponsible man and jumped headlong into it! Although he scalded himself, he succeeded to make others think that it was cooler than it really was. “Amalek was burned but he wanted so much to harm Israel that he didn’t care, even though Israel hadn’t done anything to them. The other nations followed and were burned but they didn’t want to look bad in front of the others now that Amalek had jumped in.” “We see this happening today. Iran is willing to destroy their economy, they are willing to destroy their own country, just to convince the other Arab nations to attack Israel. Erdogan is the same way. His economy is crashing but he doesn’t care. Hamas is clearly this way. They want the IDF to attack, as long as it means bad for Israel. Anyone who acts this way today is from the seed of Amalek.” “The commandment isn’t to conquer Amalek. It is to wipe him out from the world because as long as there is a memory of Amalek in the world, the Moshiach (Messiah) cannot come.” “Obama was not satisfied in setting his country’s policy against Israel. He organized Europe in order to give Iran nuclear weapons, even though Iran was calling for ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Death to America.’ He used the United Nations against Israel. These are the traits of Amalek.” “Trump has done precisely the opposite. He has come up against all the countries that have shown the traits of Amalek.” “The evil that Amalek planted is still in the world and every person has to ask himself if he has taken on these traits. God promised that Amalek will be wiped out. Whoever goes in the ways of Amalek will most certainly be wiped out.” Amalek: Preventing the Jews From Settling Israel Rabbi Yosef Dayan, a member of the nascent Sanhedrin, is unafraid to make difficult judgments with dire consequences. Rabbi Dayan played a central role in so-called “death curse” ceremonies, or Pulsa diNura, aimed at Yitzhak Rabin and Ariel Sharon as a punishment for their giving up portions of Israel and dealing with murderers of Jews. BDS rally (Credit: Odemirense via Wikipedia)“Amalek didn’t just do random evil,” Rabbi Dayan told Breaking Israel News. “They came to stop the Jews from entering Israel. Anyone who does the same, who tries to stop the Jews from doing God’s will, from settling Israel, is Amalek. This can be Jews or non-Jews. This is certainly countries and leaders like Iran. This can be the United Nations or even movements like BDS (Boycott Divest Sanctions). This can even be left-wing Jews in Israel.” Rabbi Dayan paraphrased Rabbi Moshe Charlap, a leader in the religious Zionist movement of the first half of the 20th century. “A major trait of Amalek is the rejection of any rule, in particular the rule of heaven. Amalek wants to rule himself and everyone else. Israel is, quite simply, visual and undeniable proof that God rules the world. That is why Amalek and those who go in his way simply cannot bear the sight of Israel.”

Title: EXODUS 15:178/14/2018 ● 11:24 AM “And plant them in your own mountain” is understood as a reference either to Har Habayit (the Temple Mount) or to the entire Land of Israel. When Hashem (God) says that the Jewish People will be planted in the Land of Israel, He means that they will establish roots there and flourish. Jewish tradition explains that this is a reference to the time of the Mashiach (Messiah), when the Children of Israel will be brought back to the Land of Israel, never to be uprooted again. For two thousand years, Jews have been asking for the fulfillment of this verse each week as part of the Shabbat (Sabbath) prayers, “bring us with happiness to our land and plant us in our borders.”

Title: Indonesia bans Israelis from Asian Games, but names Israel’s Moovit as official transit app8/14/2018 ● 3:45 PM An Israeli startup’s mobile guide has been chosen as the official mobility app for the Asian Games in Indonesia to help millions of fans get to sports competitions at the event from which Israel has been banned since 1981, highlighting the ambiguity at the heart of the boycott movement against the Jewish State. Israel competed at the Asian Games five times, from 1954 to 1974. In 1981 the Asian Games Federation was organized as the Olympic Council of Asia and for political reasons Israel was excluded, and a year later banned permanently. Palestinian athletes, however, remain on the roster, The Times of Israel reported Monday. The Asian Games, held every four years, are hailed as the second-largest multi-sport event after the Olympics. Teams for 44 countries compete in the tournament, which attracts 3 million visitors from all over the world. During the Asian Games, also known as Asiad, which will take place August 18 – September 2 in Jakarta and Palembang, Moovit will send out notifications of all transit updates and changes. The app provides real-time transit arrivals and directions, as well as trip plans, service alerts and Get Off Alerts. “Moovit has the most complete, up-to-date coverage of all modes of transit and lines in Jakarta & Palembang than any other provider,” the company said in a statement. Moovit previously helped organize major sport events, including the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the UEFA EURO 2016. The crowdsourced public transportation app, created by an Israeli startup of the same name, has become the world’s most downloaded transit app, and has more than 200 million users in over 2,500 cities in 82 countries. The startup was set up by Nir Erez in Tel Aviv in February 2012 together with Roy Bick and Yaron Evron. The company has raised $131.5 million to date from investors including Intel Capital and Sequoia Capital.

Title: Israeli forces raid illegal weapons workshop near Hebron8/14/2018 ● 3:38 PM Israeli forces raided a suspected weapons workshop in the West Bank village of Yatta, south of Hebron, on Monday night, and also carried out a series of raids throughout the West Bank to arrest Palestinians wanted on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activity and riots. IDF Spokesperson’s Unit IDF forces bring in heavy equipment to raid a workshop in Yatta that was producing illegal Carlo assault riflesThe raid on the suspected illegal gun mill followed a joint IDF-Shin Bet security agency operation to thwart a weapons deal. During the operation, two suspects were arrested for allegedly manufacturing and selling guns, and Israeli forces recovered a homemade Carlo automatic rifle. The IDF carried out the raid as part of a major campaign against the spread of illegal guns across the West Bank. In separate raids, a total of 21 Palestinians were arrested throughout the West Bank Monday night and were taken in for questioning on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities. Four of them were arrested in the village of Beit Umar for allegedly setting a fire near the Israeli settlement of Bat Ayin. The arrests sparked a riot near Beit Umar, with protesters shooting off fireworks and throwing rocks, Molotov cocktails, burning tires and a homemade bomb at the soldiers. The soldiers fired their weapons in the air and used crowd dispersal measures to contain the riot. No injuries were reported among the soldiers. Another IDF operation near the village of Beit Rima also encountered a riot, during which Palestinians threw rocks, Molotov cocktails and pipe bombs at the soldiers. No injuries were reported, but IDF vehicles sustained damage.

Title: In new controversy, Corbyn shown at Holocaust denier’s wedding8/14/2018 ● 3:36 PM Controversial U.K. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn attended the wedding in London in 2010 of senior Palestinian diplomat Husam Zomlot, who has since been accused of Holocaust denial, according to a report in the Mail on Sunday. The paper featured a photo of Corbyn, then a Labour backbencher, apparently proposing a toast in Zomlot’s honor at the wedding. Zomlot was then serving in the U.K., and was later named the Palestinian ambassador to the United States. In the same year, Corbyn also called Zomlot his “close friend” and thanked him for his contribution to anti-Israeli group Palestine Solidarity Campaign. According to the Mail on Sunday, in 2014, Zomlot told the BBC that Israel was “fabricating” stories about the Islamic State beheading of journalists “as if they are fabricating also the story of the Holocaust, that it happened in Europe.” In another instance, Zomlot also said that Israel was established on the “skulls of our [Palestinian] nation” and that it was carrying out an “ethnic cleansing campaign.” It is unclear if Corbyn ever distanced himself from those remarks or from Zomlot. He supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and a negotiated settlement that delivers peace and security for both peoples,” the spokesman said. “Husam Zomlot is a leading Palestinian political figure and effectively ambassador to the U.S., having played the same role in Britain. He has made clear he is not a Holocaust denier – and did so in the same BBC broadcast that is the subject of controversy. Jeremy attended his wedding in London in 2010, along with a wide range of British and other international diplomats.”

Title: World Bank grants unemployed Gazans $17 million in aid8/14/2018 ● 3:35 PM The World Bank plans to provide unemployed Gazans with millions of dollars in aid, Israel Hayom learned Monday. In late July, the World Bank announced it would increase its yearly allocation to the Palestinians from $55 million to $90 million because of “challenges in the Gaza Strip that have left the territory on the verge of economic and social collapse,” the Bloomberg financial news agency reported. The latest World Bank initiative will funnel $17 million to Gaza as part of a project that aims to employ 4,400 Gazan ages 18 to 34, half of them women, in third-sector organizations focused on health care, education and assistance for the elderly and the disabled. The new project will also support the training of 750 young Palestinians in the fields of media and the internet. Controlled by the Islamist terrorist group Hamas, which ousted rival faction Fatah in a military coup in 2007, the Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli maritime blockade, and its land crossings are subject to significant Israeli and Egyptian restrictions. Israel and Egypt both maintain the restrictions are necessary to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons and terrorists into Gaza. However, the blockade has left Gaza’s economy in a shambles. According to World Bank data, unemployment in Gaza is estimated at 48%, compared to 13% in the Fatah-controlled West Bank, and more than half of Gaza’s population, some 900,000 people, live in poverty, with about a third of them are unable to afford basic necessities such as clothing, food and shelter. ”Economic instability and the lack of jobs prevent educated young people in Gaza from contributing to economic growth. In addition to a sharp drop in basic services such as water and electricity, this is something that intensifies social tensions,” a World Bank spokeswoman said in a statement. The 189-member international financial institution maintains 130 offices worldwide and aims to reduce poverty and provide “a wide array of financial products and technical assistance, and we help countries share and apply innovative knowledge and solutions to the challenges they face.”

Title: The sale of Azerbaijan’s Jewish community center deals a painful blow to a dwindling community8/14/2018 ● 8:18 PM Arnold Zeligman, left, teaching Hebrew to Bella Regimov, wearing head cover, and other students at The Jewish House in Baku, Azerbaijan, July 18, 2018. (Cnaan Liphshiz) BAKU, Azerbaijan (JTA) — About one year after Bella Regimov’s two children left their native country for Israel along with many of her friends and relatives, she began feeling socially isolated. On her own in Azerbaijan’s family-oriented society, the 76-year-old was losing “the will to get up in the morning” following their immigration in the early 2000s, she said. But in 2006, things turned around. That year, she started volunteering at the Jewish community center that the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, or JDC, had opened two years earlier in this capital city of the Caucasus republic. “This became my home, my real home,” Regimov said of The Jewish House, a crumbling building on a busy street bordering the Baku Railway Station. “I come here first thing in the morning and I stay to close the place.” Since she started volunteering, Regimov has come to depend on the center for social interaction, a sense of purpose and even exercise: She walks at least two miles a day to the center and back to her home in Baku’s old Jewish quarter. In the summer, she walks briskly to minimize her exposure to the scorching sun, slowing down only under the shade of the buildings featuring the city’s ubiquitous beige sandstone tiles. But this month, Regimov and dozens of others of elderly Jews in Baku will have to leave the building that houses the city’s only Jewish community center. JDC has sold it to streamline its expenses in a city with a dwindling Jewish community. The sale is part of a broader effort by JDC to respond to shifting Jewish community demographics, the New York-based group said. In the case of Baku, whose Jewish population has shrunk from 16,000 to 8,000 since 2000, JDC will move its offices to a much smaller space, a JDC spokesperson said. Many Azeri Jews have left for Russia and Israel in search of opportunities unavailable under the nepotist economy of Azerbaijan, an oil-rich country where many residents nonetheless live in abject poverty. As the community shrinks, Regimov and other elderly Jews value even more the institutions that have been their solution to loneliness. “Please tell them not to take this away from us,” she said. “It’s my reason for getting up in the morning, and I’m not the only one.” The Jewish House, at 13,000 square feet, includes an auditorium, workshop rooms, classrooms and space for exhibitions. JDC said the new space is about five times smaller, but will have space for activities and a day center for seniors. Still, Shaul Davidov, who has headed The Jewish House since its opening, said the change means the “end of an era” for his community. The organizations that run Jewish communal activities in Baku will find a new address there, he said, but “it means a painful loss” for Regimov and dozens of elderly Jews who come to The Jewish House daily to play cards, participate in arts and crafts lessons and study Hebrew. “I don’t think they’ll come. It will not be the same,” he said. Arnold Zeligman, an 86-year-old volunteer teacher of Hebrew at The Jewish House, is determined to resume his activity in the new space. “But where will we have concerts? Where will we have a festive kabbalat Shabbat?” he asks. “I don’t see it happening, and it’s a very big shame.” The Jewish House’s annual upkeep costs about $60,000, Davidov said. Saul Davidov greeting regulars at the entrance to The Jewish House, July 18, 2018. (Cnaan Liphshiz) Baku has two active synagogues in the old Jewish quarter. Both are small in comparison to The Jewish House and “our people don’t really feel like it’s their space there,” said Zeligman, whose only son lives in Israel. His students are a dozen or so pensioners, who enjoyed the unplanned study break they were given last month while Zeligman spoke to JTA. Watching him wrap his tongue around some of the best Hebrew-language words in his vocabulary, they crack jokes at his expense in Juhuri, the dying dialect spoken here by many Jews. A mix of Farsi and Hebrew, it is the centuries-old language of the Mountain Jews — a stream of Judaism that is considered neither Sephardic nor Ashkenazi, and whose members have their own manner of singing scripture and songs. About half of Azerbaijan’s Jews are Mountain Jews. The rest are Ashkenazim who came here before 1991, when Russia still ruled what is now Azerbaijan. Fading and lacking an agreed-upon alphabet — the few Juhuri books in existence are divided into volumes using Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and Latin — the pensioners’ native tongue is no use for communicating with grandchildren in Israel and beyond over Skype, requiring them to study Hebrew. But none of them is seriously thinking about moving to Israel as long as they are in good health, Zeligman said. Michal Frank, the executive director of JDC in the former Soviet Union, said she “understands that it can be upsetting” to some in the community. “We’re very attentive to their needs, but we need to adjust to demographic shifts and decreasing budgets for the good of all JDC clients,” she said. In 2017, JDC spent more than $120 million — slightly over one-third of its budget — on supporting Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union. This included funding for the Hesed program, which provided that year support to some 110,000 individuals from the neediest segments of the community. JDC has had to direct extra resources to Russia and Ukraine, where most of the former Soviet Jews live, in order to meet growing needs. Since 2013, JDC has seen at least 6,500 Jews apply for its welfare programs in Ukraine, one of the most dramatic increases in reliance on JDC aid since Ukraine gained independence in 1991. It was part of JDC’s response to a financial crisis that in 2014 hit the economies of both Russia and Ukraine in connection with their territorial conflict. These socioeconomic developments coincided with a decrease in JDC’s available cash. The group’s assets dropped gradually from $711 million in 2014 to $644 million last year – a 10 percent decrease. And expenditures dropped accordingly, from $336 million to $311 million over that same period, according to its annual reports. As needs increase elsewhere, they shrink in places like Baku. At The Jewish House, the number of people receiving services, or clients, declined by half since 2005, according to JDC. There are currently some 900 elderly clients there. Few younger Jews apply for aid. This depletion is not unique to Azerbaijan. It is being seen across the former Soviet region, where ailing economies and the erosion of democratic standards are prompting many Jews who resisted earlier waves of emigration to finally leave. In the Russian Siberian city of Chelyabinsk, the JDC Hesed office has seen a decrease of 51 percent in the number of its clients from 2004. In Krasnoyarsk, another Russian city in Siberia, a 63 percent decrease in clients since 2004 resulted in JDC merging that city’s Hesed operations, servicing its 219 remaining clients, with the one in Novosibirsk. In Belarus, after the number of clients fell by half, Hesed offices in Polotsk and Vitebsk merged. Israel is certainly seeing the impact of this trend. Russia and Ukraine alone provided Israel with most of its immigrants in 2017 — the first calendar year in over a decade that this has happened. In Azerbaijan, many Jews leave for Moscow, where they can easily obtain work visas and where many wealthy Azeri Jews can help them put down roots. Davidov, the head of The Jewish House, says he is aware of the bigger picture. “We’ll soon be gone anyway,” he said. “Is saving a few thousand dollars a year really worth tearing all this down?” The post The sale of Azerbaijan’s Jewish community center deals a painful blow to a dwindling community appeared first on Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Title: Ben Stiller helps Gary Shteyngart sell his latest novel. Buyer beware.8/14/2018 ● 6:52 PM (JTA) — Gary Shteyngart is nearly as successful in gathering A-list friends as he is in writing critically acclaimed novels. To promote his 2014 memoir “Little Failure,” he starred in a video that featured Rashida Jones as his publisher and James Franco as his husband. For his latest novel, “Lake Success,” Shteyngart has Ben Stiller in his corner. In a video promoting the book, the Jewish writer and the Jewish actor-director seek backers for their new hedge fund, “Lake Success Capital,” which promises to take money from “accredited investors” and then, Shteyngart explains, “transfer that money to me and Ben.” The protagonist of Shteyngart’s latest novel is a hedge fund manager who leaves behind his wife, autistic son and work troubles to embark on a cross country bus trip. Kirkus Reviews says the book is “as good as anything we’ve seen from this author: smart, relevant, fundamentally warm-hearted, hilarious of course, and it has a great ending.” The post Ben Stiller helps Gary Shteyngart sell his latest novel. Title: Israeli attorney general to investigate security services’ interrogations of liberal activists8/14/2018 ● 6:25 PM Peter Beinart attending the Israeli Presidential Conference in Jerusalem, June 21 2012. (Flash90) JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Attorney General’s Office in Israel is investigating a spate of incidents in which prominent left-wing activists have been detained and questioned about their politics and ideologies when trying to enter the country. According to a report in Haaretz, Deputy Attorney General Dina Zilber has asked the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence service, to clarify the reasoning behind its actions, which have been a source of controversy both domestically and abroad. Her investigation follows a complaint by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. Zilber plans on chairing a meeting on the issue in September. Haaretz also reported that Knesset member Nachman Shai had called on the state comptroller to begin an inquiry into what he described as the “blacklist of people denied entry.” “Israel, which boasts of its democracy and its freedom of expression, cannot impose such restrictions on visitors,” he said. “The war on terror and on delegitimization is one thing, but gagging people is something else entirely. This causes great damage to Israel’s international standing and its democratic values, as they are perceived overseas. “I have no idea how the list is put together and who appears on it, but it’s reminiscent of totalitarian regimes.” In the most recent case to make the news, Peter Beinart, a prominent liberal Zionist journalist and commentator, was interrogated at the Tel Aviv airport. He was visiting the country with his wife and children for a family affair. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement Monday that he had spoken with Israel’s security forces about Beinart’s detainment and called it an “administrative mistake.” Others questioned recently include Simone Zimmerman, a co-founder of the progressive Jewish group IfNotNow; Abby Kirschbaum, who works for an Israeli-Palestinian tour company; and the novelist Moriel Rothman-Zecher. In early July, the Jewish pro-boycott activist Ariel Gold was denied entry into Israel. A law passed last year allows Israel to bar supporters of the BDS movement, which encourages boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Israeli officials say the questioning is just a matter of security, ensuring that those entering the country are not militant extremists or, in Koplow’s case, possibly carrying something dangerous in their luggage. The officials insist they are not interested in political stances or opinions of Israel’s prime minister. Title: NYU professor suspended after investigation finds she harassed former student8/14/2018 ● 5:38 PM The New York University campus is located in downtown Manhattan. (Jonathan71/Wikimedia Commons) NEW YORK (JTA) — An older mentor, a leader in a given field, pressures a young mentee into inappropriate sexual situations — it is a common recurring story in news headlines since the outing of Harvey Weinstein last year. The typical narrative involves a man victimizing a woman. The New York Times has chronicled a story involving two academics of Israeli heritage that reverses the narrative familiar in the #MeToo era. New York University suspended the prominent professor Avital Ronell, who teaches German and comparative literature, for the upcoming academic term after an investigation found that she sexually harassed a former graduate student. One of her students, Nimrod Reitman, complained that Ronell verbally and physically harassed him. Reitman, 34, alleges that Ronell, 66, tried kissing him and requiring him to share a bed with her starting in 2012. Reitman filed a Title IX complaint in 2017, two years after receiving his doctorate from the university. He is now a visiting fellow at Harvard. Ronell identifies as a lesbian and Reitman identifies as gay. She has denied harassing Reitman, and she invoked their sexual orientations and shared Israeli roots in a statement to The Times. “Our communications — which Reitman now claims constituted sexual harassment — were between two adults, a gay man and a queer woman, who share an Israeli heritage, as well as a penchant for florid and campy communications arising from our common academic backgrounds and sensibilities,” she said. “These communications were repeatedly invited, responded to and encouraged by him over a period of three years.” After NYU finished the investigation in the spring, prominent feminists came to Ronell’s defense, including Judith Butler, an influential gender theory scholar. Some saw the defenses as echoing similar ones, criticized by feminists, made on behalf of male accused harassers. The university’s Title IX investigation found Ronell guilty of physical and verbal harassment, but not of other actions alleged by Reitman, including sexual assault, stalking and retaliation. The investigation concluded amid the flood of sexual harassment allegations known as the #MeToo movement, mostly made by women against prominent men. Reitman said that he had filed his complaint prior to those allegations. “It didn’t come from #MeToo,” he said.
