Join the movement WHAT WE DO The NL Composting Co-operative serves as a resource station to support people interested in developing your own grassroots, small-scale composting sites and programs within your communities. SITE DEVELOPMENT Mapping our needs from start to finish. * Consulting services to assist with accessing funding, business plans, and logistics or operation of composting sites * Grant applications and logistical operations of organics collection (i.e. site development and community curbside pickup services) * Reporting (including social, economic, and environmental benefits) * Understanding Labour Market Information * Partnership brokering (establishing, maintaining, and leveraging ‘Waste Reduction Partnerships’) * Workshops and training COMPOST LITERACY & EDUCATION Educating our family, friends, neighbours, and politicians. * Educational resources * Promotional materials * Workshops * Programming and program design (including after-school programs/summer camps) * Customized small-scale composting toolkits (e.g. infographics, social media content, etc.) DATA & RESEARCH Measuring, sharing, and advocating for our operations' positive impact. * Measuring and tracking data * Compost production, quality indicators, etc. * GreenHouse Gas reductions * Financial savings (i.e. tipping fee reductions, operational capacity building) * Case Studies (demonstrating waste management cost reduction) * Capacity to present data publicly (Marketing Role) * Lobbying (Municipalities, Local Service District, Provincial, Federal) WHO WE ARE The NL Composting Co-operative aims to provide a comprehensive platform that will enable members to share resources and services such as compost literacy and educational materials, data and research, and site development. We officially became a cooperative in August 2024, and we’re excited to start growing and adding to our network. * MISSION The NL Composting Co-operative is a resource platform for communities to come together and explore grassroots solutions to organics management. * VISION Small-Scale Composting empowers collective action and becomes an organic part of every community. * VALUES * Climate Justice * Oneness * Mindfulness * Partnerships * Openness * Stewardship * Transparency * Inclusion * Nourishment * Grassroots OUR HISTORY Recognizing the urgency, need, and support for community-based composting programs that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable in the long term, an informal NL Community Composting Network was born in March 2023. For over a year, the Steering Committee, made up of people from across the province, focused their vision on empowering collective climate action through small-scale community composting. In January 2024, the Steering Committee was accepted to the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Co-operative’s Co-operative Incubator Pilot Program, a robust six-month program involving Training and Workshops, Mentoring Teams, Coworking and Peer Support Opportunities, and Access to Funding for incorporation and start-up assistance. Have you noticed that, for a movement focused on composting, we don’t really use the term ‘waste’ or ‘organic waste’? Instead, we prefer using the term ‘organics’, because there's no such a thing as waste… just wasted resources.
