This Thursday, December 8th, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Since under this title, Mary is the patroness of the United States, this feast is always celebrated as a holy day. On Thursday, December 8th, Masses will be celebrated at 8:30 AM (with the children from the school), and 12 Noon in English, and 7:00 PM in Spanish. The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter. As of today, there have been at least 607 mass shootings through November 22 of this year. That’s just short of the 638 mass shootings in the country at this point last year – the worst year on record since the group began tracking them in 2014 On the days leading up to Thanksgiving, there was a mass shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, 6 were killed and 4 were injured. That was just three days after five people died in a shooting rampage at the Q Nightclub, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs In the past week alone, mass shootings have claimed at least 24 lives and injured 37 others in gun rampages across seven states, according to the Gun Violence Archive. There have been more mass shootings than days so far in 2022 – a trend that’s continued each year since 2019 – underscoring the growing prevalence of gun violence in American life. So far in November, there have been at least 32 mass shootings across the nation resulting in more than 177 people shot and 43 dead. This is a life issue! As Catholics we are called to cherish, defend and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its natural end, and at every point in between. When a person of faith identifies themself as being “pro life” it means that they are concerned with every dimension of life, from womb to tomb. Still to this day, the word or the term “pro life” is used interchangeably with the term “anti-abortion.” If other issues of life are brushed to the side - like the whole issue of guns, then that in fact is not being pro-life. Cardinal Joseph Bernadine, a former Archbishop of Chicago, often spoke about a consistent ethic of life as being a “Seamless Garment.” The consistent ethic of life is an ideology that opposes abortion of course, but it also opposes gun violence, capital punishment, assisted suicide, and euthanasia. Cardinal Bernadine had spoken out against nuclear war as well. He expanded the scope of his view to include all aspects of human life. In the world of today, when we speak about a consistent ethic of life, when we speak about the seamless garment, that too has to include our care towards the most vulnerable of our society, be they victims of war or gun violence, the immigrant, the migrant, the refugee, abused children, the poor, the marginalized, the mentally challenged, members of the LGBTQ community, those without healthcare, and that list goes on. On the website for the USCCB, there is almost nothing on gun violence. As a church, we need to become much more prophetic than we are now. We need to use our prophetic voices collectively and wisely and end the daily violence that is being done to the most vulnerable – yes to the unborn, but to the marginalized, whose communities are being torn apart each day because violence caused by guns. This must stop. As we journey through these days of Advent, a season of hope, we pray that God’s Spirit will inspire us to use our prophetic voices wisely on behalf of all the vulnerable and marginalized communities of the world. Peace, Fr. St. Paul tells us that we must, “Bear [our] share of hardship for the gospel.” In living a Christian life, we are asked to make sacrifices for the good of others and for the good of the Church. In light of the current situation regarding COVID-19, the words of St. Paul seem increasingly important. Many parishes will experience financial hardship in the near future, and most will struggle to meet critical needs. We understand that the financial circumstances of many of our families are uncertain, but please know of our deep gratitude for whatever you can contribute to support our Church during this challenging time. if you would like to make a gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal to support the broader needs of our archdiocese, you can do so at https://cardinalsappeal.org/donate. We are truly grateful for your generosity. Please know that we will continue to pray for those infected with COVID-19, those caring for the sick, and those that are the most vulnerable among us. * CARE FOR CREATION Please view our web page from the home drop down menu, and read weekly reflections on the Season of Creation Further information on Care for Creation Catholic Climate Covenant Newsletter * ALL ARE ALWAYS WELCOME * OUR MISSION/NUESTRA MISIÓN No matter your age, your race, your gender, or your sexual orientation, there is a place for you at Ascension.
