LONELY NO MORE

LONELY NO MORE

Feeling lonely? Well, you're not alone.

While it's easier than ever to interact with people thanks to social media,
FaceTime, and the like, author and technology well-being expert Tchiki Davis,
PhD, says we're feeling increasingly lonely at the same time. “And even though
we may use technology to feel more connected, it may be exactly
what’s leading us to feel lonely,” says Davis, writing for Psychology Today.

She offers some strategies to help keep loneliness at bay:

Be kind to yourself. When things get tough, it's easy to engage in hurtful
self-talk. Davis suggests taking some time for self-care, with suggestions like
going for a walk in nature, treating yourself to a spa day, or even simply
getting some extra sleep. What's something you could do to give yourself some
joy?

Tend to—and expand—your network. Reach out to people you're already connected to
and plan a time to catch up over coffee or lunch. Davis suggests a goal of at
least one social hour per week. She also advocates actively talking to
strangers, even it that just means briefly chatting with a barista before you
get your cup of coffee, or joining a group designed for people with a common
interest. These acts also reduce loneliness.

Connect in real life. It's easy to opt for virtual communication, and sometimes
it's the only option. But when you can, connecting with others in-person can
decrease loneliness. “We do this by looking people in the eyes, listening,
being mindful, and choosing not be distracted by our phones or other
technologies,” Davis says. Engaging in sports and volunteering are also great
ways to connect with others in real life.

Embrace the present moment. When you feel good or experience something positive,
no matter how big or small, Davis suggests sharing that moment with a friend or
colleague, and not on social media. “By sharing these moments, you create small
moments of savoring and connection with others that can help you
overcome loneliness,” she writes.

Longing for a getaway but can't get away? “There are studies that show that
looking at pleasant images can provide a type of mental escape for individuals
during times of moderate stress,” says Sandra Sgoutas-Emch, a psychological
sciences professor at the University of San Diego. For some “travel”
ideas, check out these suggestions from CNBC Travel.

Consider This: There are times when you can harness being alone,
too. Visualization—focusing your imagination to experience a desired feeling
like peacefulness or confidence—can help relieve anxiety, according to Katharina
Star, PhD, writing for Verywell Mind. To give it a go, take a few minutes and
find a distraction-free environment, close your eyes, and consider slowing your
breathing. You can visualize somewhere you find peaceful, like a secluded beach.
Or instead, focus on a goal you want to achieve; say you're anxious about going
to a party, so imagine yourself there having fun. Star also suggests using this
time for compassion meditation, in which you show yourself kindness by repeating
a mantra like, “I am worthy of love and understanding.”
