The Official Veterinary Services (SVO) of the Government of Extremadura and the
Junta de (government of) Andalucía have reported the detection of 3 outbreaks of
serotype 3 of the bluetongue virus in 3 sheep farms located in the
municipalities of Cheles and Alconchel, in the province of Badajoz, and Rosal de
la Frontera, in the province of Huelva. The farms are located near the border
with Portugal, where last week the Portuguese authorities announced circulation
of this serotype (See map 1).

Suspicion arose when several animals from the affected farms presented clinical
symptoms compatible with the disease. The samples taken from the animals were
positive for bluetongue virus by PCR in the regional laboratory, results that
have been confirmed as positive to serotype 3 by the Central Veterinary
Laboratory of Algete, the national reference laboratory for the disease in
Spain.

The presence of serotype 3 of the bluetongue virus had already been notified 2
weeks ago by the Portuguese veterinary authorities in the Évora region,
bordering the provinces of Badajoz and Huelva, so the most probable origin of
these new outbreaks is transport by means of the wind of vectors infected with
the virus from Portugal.

Prevention measures are being reinforced in the affected area, surveillance and
control, including mandatory vaccination against bluetongue virus serotype 3 in
all animals older than 3 months age of ovine and bovine species, the
establishment of restrictions on movements of animals of species sensitive to
the disease, the reinforcement of passive surveillance, for which immediate
communication of any suspicion to the SVO, as well as the recommendation of
disinfestation of ruminant farms in the area.

Remember that bluetongue is a viral disease that is transmitted by diptera of
the genus _Culicoides_ that affects ruminants of different species, but in no
case [can it] affect man.
