SAMARITANOS SIN FRONTERAS

Providing humanitarian aid to migrants in Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico

Samaritanos Sin Fronteras volunteers are people of conscience working openly
with migrant shelters in Sonoyta, Mexico.  We provide humanitarian aid while
respecting the dignity and autonomy of the shelters. This aid includes monetary
donations and in-kind donations based on requested needs.

Home: Welcome

ABOUT US

We began in 2022 as an informal group of like-minded individuals who saw the
needs of people staying in shelters in Sonoyta, Sonora and wanted to help.
Recently we realized we needed to organize more formally to maximize our
effectiveness, so we formed a nonprofit corporation in 2024 in Ajo, Arizona. Our
focus is strictly humanitarian assistance based solely on requests of the
shelter managers and individuals residing in the shelters.  Donations to
Samaritanos Sin Fronteras are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and
we depend on gifts and in-kind donations from individuals, religious groups, and
other organizations to continue our work.

OUR PROGRAMS

Making a Difference

MAINTENANCE AND BUILDING PROJECTS

We support the residents and guests at Casa Del Migrante in their ongoing
efforts to improve their living conditions at the shelter. Past projects have
included completing the dormitories, sealing the roof, and providing air
conditioning and heating. In the near future we hope to help the men build more
secure office and storage space.

MEDICAL

Samaritanos Sin Fronteras volunteers, with the help of generous donations, have
been able to provide access to medical care for shelter residents. During the
last year, several residents were able to have hernia, prostate, and cataract
surgeries, greatly improving their quality of life and ability to work. Several
surgeries are needed in the near future. We also refill prescriptions as needed.

NUTRITION

Samaritanos Sin Fronteras supplies weekly deliveries of fresh fruits,
vegetables, extra meat, and little extras such as breakfast pastries to
supplement the guests’ meager meals. We also bring dog food, children’s
vitamins, pedialyte popsicles, juices, and cereals as requested.

CRITTER CARE

At all the shelters we’ve visited in Sonoyta, pets of all kinds - dogs, cats,
tortoises, even a baby pig (!) - have helped bring comfort to people uprooted
from their homes. Samaritanos Sin Fronteras volunteers help supply food and
medical care for the four-legged shelter residents. One of the dogs (La Pantera,
pictured above) has developed bone cancer in her back paw. She is under a vet’s
care currently.

SHELTER REPORTS

Note: asylum seekers and other migrants encountered at the shelters are referred
to by an initial to protect their privacy and safety.

5/28/24

Bob Feinman, Laurie Cantillo, Dan Abbott, all of Humane Borders, went down to
Sonoyta this afternoon with Tom and Carol Wingo. You may remember the problem
they had several weeks ago when they tried to cross the border with the Humane
Borders water truck. Bob was able to set up a meeting with the head of
immigration in Sonoyta, Sonora who escorted him and Laurie to a meeting with
Mexican customs agents today to find out what needs to happen so the truck has
permission to cross the border when necessary. It turns out that after HB
submits requested forms, a 6 month permit will be issued and all will be well.

While Bob and Laurie met with the agents, Tom, Dan, and Carol drove over to
Bodega Aurrera grocery store and bought spaghetti dinner fixings, ham
sandwiches, apples, bananas, carrots, and the makings for salad. After they
picked Bob and Laurie back up at the border, they brought the groceries to Casa
Del Migrante.

This week there are 17 men at CDM. They helped unload groceries and then a few
men chatted with Laurie, Bob, and Dan while O and Carol made a quick trip to the
pharmacy to buy prescriptions for M and O.

La Pantera is suffering, Both R and O feel it is time to release her from her
misery, though the manager is struggling with the decision. The volunteers
promised to talk to Karla Vasquez Betancourt about La Pantera’s options.

Chiquita has gotten a summer haircut to help with the heat. She was playful
today and enjoyed everyone’s attention, while Señor Pequeño, the tortoise,
seemed oblivious to it all, and the other dogs hugged the cool concrete.

The SSF volunteers brought requested fly strips and some mosquito spray - as the
weather warms, all the flying critters begin to swarm. The men keep the garbage
can covered and the doggy ‘gifts’ cleaned up, but still the flies are becoming
obnoxious. Fly strips help a little.

This evening after the.volunteers returned to Ajo, they had a chance to speak
with Karla. She told them there is an animal clinic called Hope Clinic (Clinica
La Esperanza) in Puerto Peñasco that will determine whether anything can be done
for La Pantera. If yes, they will provide free chemotherapy for her. If nothing
can be done, they will put her to sleep. So there is still some hope for her❤️.

SSF Shelter Report

Volunteers packed suitcases with children’s vitamins, cereal, juices, and
medications and had no trouble at all crossing the border.

They dropped off the vitamins, cereal, and juice boxes at Centro de Esperanza
resource center in Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico to the delight of the director, Karla
Betancourt, who told them that the children love the juices. At this shelter
most of the guests are mothers with children or families waiting for their
CBPONE appointments so they can request asylum in the U.S. There are presently
approximately 35 children at this resource center.

At Bodega Aurrera grocery store (Walmart in México) the volunteers bought fruit,
vegetables, meat, tortillas, and requested bars of soap for the 17 men at Casa
Del Migrante shelter for men, also in Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico. There were no
ready-made ham sandwiches, which the men enjoy as a break from routine, so they
got the makings for a spaghetti supper. Many of the men at this shelter have
lived in the U.S. for years but have been deported and have families and loved
ones in the U.S. whom they miss desperately.

When the volunteers arrived at CDM, so had a group of folks who were promoting
their candidate for local public office. The energetic supporters linked arms
and walked up the dirt road holding flags, followed by a truck with their
candidate’s name and picture emblazoned on the side. The residents asked the
supporters to come back another time and let the volunteers in while they
carried the groceries into the kitchen prep area.

M, one of the residents, showed the volunteers  his arm, which he still hasn’t
had examined at the clinic. He thinks it’s skin cancer. The volunteers brought
some creams for him to try, but they hope he will screw up the nerve to let a
doctor look at it. Another gentleman, N, requested a ride to the pharmacy for an
antibiotic for his tooth infection. He likely needs to see a dentist.

The dogs (there are 5) were lying on the cool concrete this morning. La Pantera,
one of the dogs, has bone cancer in her rear leg and stays close to the the
resident who makes jewelry to eke out a small living.  She usually sits under
the table near his feet as he works. Now that it’s getting hotter, Chiquita, who
is a small white poodlish dog and best beloved of the shelter’s cook, is
struggling with her itchy skin. R (her owner) said she will run out of the
medicated cream this week, so the volunteers gave him a little money to get some
more. The cream attracts dirt to her naturally fluffy white fur even though R
bathes her once a week. Better dirty-looking than itchy! The volunteers were
able to get a short video of Señor Pequeño (the tiny desert tortoise who is also
one of the pets in the Shelter menagerie) in the shade in his wheelbarrow eating
a lettuce leaf for lunch. R takes such good care of all the animals ❤️.

The weather in the Sonoran Desert is beginning to heat up; the men who were not
out working day labor rested and swayed in hammocks, waiting for the evening
breezes and a hot meal.
