The crash sounded like a “massive bomb” building owner Bob Baker said.

A seasonal worker who escaped injury when a car crashed and shunted a van into
his bedroom as he slept is feeling grateful the vehicle took the brunt of the
smash.

About 11pm on Wednesday, a yellow Mini left the road and crashed into the old
Normanby Hotel on Mawhitiwhiti Rd, demolishing part of a toilet room and
smashing two parked vehicles.

The two occupants were both taken to Taranaki Base Hospital, one in a serious
condition, the other moderate.

The man, one of a group of overseas workers who live at the former hotel, was
woken when the shunted van came through the wall of his bedroom, about half a
metre away from where he slept.

Although he was not hurt, he did feel shaken, and he was without transport
because his own car, parked outside, was damaged in the crash.

“It’s great the bus [van] was there, it saved my life, if it was not here, the
car would have come right to me,” the man, who did not give his name, said.

The car crashed into the building about 11pm, taking out one of the toilets in
the process.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Mawhitiwhiti Rd near Waihi Rd
State Highway 3 at 11.05pm.

Building owner Bob Baker, who lives on site in a bus, said he was watching TV
when he heard the bang.

“It was massive, like a bomb,” he said.

“It slammed into the building, a guy was asleep, it ended up about a foot away
from him,” he said.

“It’s demolished the toilet behind the wall.”

It appeared the car had been travelling towards nearby SH3, but instead of
rounding the corner beside the hotel, left the road and ploughed into the
building.

As soon as it happened the men who live in the hotel came rushing out, he said.

“They all flew out from upstairs, ran down and dragged them [the occupants of
the car] out of the car, which was still running,” he said.

The two occupants of the car were taken to hospital, one in serious condition.

The car was lodged in the wall just above the building’s gas line.

On Thursday, Baker was waiting for the police to approve removing the Mini and
the other two damaged vehicles so the gas and water could be reconnected to the
building.

He was pleased he’d moved his bus across the car park a few days earlier, and
philosophical about the crash, he said.

“It’s just one of those things. No one [in the building] was hurt. You can fix
cars, you can fix buildings, but you can’t fix bodies.”

Fire crews from the Hāwera and Ōkaiawa Volunteer Fire Brigades attended the
crash, along with police and Hato Hone St John.
