OOPS! THERE WAS SOMETHING PHISHY ABOUT THAT EMAIL.

This was a phishing email sent by the Office of the Chief Information Security
Officer (CISO) as part of an authorized phishing simulation.

Let’s use this as a learning opportunity and look at the phish cues in the
email.


PHISHING EMAIL

Subject: Urgent e-mail security alert!
From: Email Security Monitor <noreply@emailsecuritymonitor.com>
To: [Your name] <[Your e-mail address]>

Dear [Your name],

Our e-mail security system has detected unusual activity with your University of
Toronto account:

- Log-in from Russian IP 95.173.136.71 today at 12:01 AM

Please log-in to confirm whether you had accessed account or not


PHISH CUES

 * Spelling and grammar irregularities
   Poor grammar and sentence structure.

 * Lack of signer detail
   The message does not contain contact information.

 * Sense of urgency
   Email implies that the reader’s work email account may be compromised.

 * Domain spoofing
   The message uses a domain that is similar to a legitimate entity’s.

 * URL hyperlinking
   This email contains a link with text that can hide the true URL in a
   hyperlink and may be a malicious link to malware.

 * Logo imitation or out-of-date branding / logos
   The message does not contain the expected brand logos.

 * Unprofessional looking design or formatting
   The design of this email is unprofessional.
