Comerica Hatch Detroit powered by TechTown Contest winner Ameneh Marhaba and her
business Little Liberia!
In a time when she had few job opportunities, Ameneh’s love for cooking inspired
her to develop and open her pop-up business Little Liberia, a company that
offers catering and private event services.
Ameneh enjoys sharing her love for food with her city. Her favorite part about
being an entrepreneur is providing her guests with the chance to experience
Liberian culture and cuisine, while learning about building a successful
business. In the next 10 years, Ameneh hopes to expand Little Liberia to its own
location, create a cookbook, and turn her business into a large e-commerce
storefront.
When asked what advice she would give aspiring entrepreneurs, Ameneh said,
“Believe in your dream and then aim higher. Success doesn’t happen overnight,
you have to continuously put in the work and push as hard as you can to get your
message to the right people. If you believe in yourself and your dream, other
people will too.”

Meet Comerica customer John Rodriguez!
John grew up in a very close family. Every night they would have dinner
together, always talked about what was happening in everyone’s life, and helped
each other out when in need. John was always told to tell the truth, help
neighbors in need, respect your elders, and work hard.
He worked in banking for 5 years right after college, but when he got married he
realized the money he was making at the bank was not going to be enough. John
now had to support two people, and wanted to provide a better life for his wife
and future kids. That was when John decided to start a business, and settled on
a construction company.
There have been many challenges for John. His company has survived a recession,
the mortgage meltdown, 9/11, and the pandemic. Every time we have been through a
challenge, he learned something, and made changes. John started catering to the
multi-family industry, and when that started slowing down, he started remodeling
homes. He had to adapt to changing times, and being able to adapt and make
changes has helped his business not only survive, but thrive all these years.
John wants to continue to expand his operations in central Texas, and open
satellite offices in other cities, but does not want to grow too much or too
fast so he can maintain the level of quality that he has been able to offer his
customers since 1995.
If he had any advice to give it would be quality, quality, quality. John says
that you have to maintain the highest level of quality. There will be times when
you will lose money in an effort to make things right, but going the extra mile
always pays off. The only way to set yourself apart from the hundreds of other
guys doing the same thing you are doing is by doing things better than all of
them.

On this #ThrowbackThursday, we look back to the origins of Comerica Bank!
Originally called Detroit Savings Fund Institute, Comerica opened its doors on
August 17, 1849, to a city bustling with shipyards, river trade, sawmills, horse
drawn carriages and dirt roads. It had six customers that day, with receipts
totaling $41.
Unlike most banks of that time, the Institute paid interest on deposits, had no
shareholders or capital stock, and was managed by unpaid fiduciaries. Courting
customers from the working class, merchants, and even children, the Institute
enjoyed steady growth, reaching the $1 million mark in 1870.

Lighting & Decorating Ceremony tradition at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in

#MeetTheBanker Martha Guerra! 👋 Martha is a Senior Alternate Credit
Administration Officer for Small Business Administration Lending. 🎉 She joined
Comerica as a part-time teller back in 1991 and has been with the company ever
since. Throughout her tenure, Martha has had many career-shaping roles from
Teller, to Business Banking Credit Specialist, to Middle Market and Commercial
Real Estate Credit Analyst, and more.
Martha says she values Comerica’s commitment to employee development, health,
and well-being and that her career is a direct result of that. Her advice for an
up-and-coming manager is to ask questions and complete the Master of Diversity
Awareness Program.
FunFact - if Martha got to have dinner with anyone from history it would be
Maria Ninfa Laurenzo, a successful Mexican American, Houston, Texas
restauranter. Maria and her husband had professional degrees but opted to open
up a tortilla manufacturing and wholesaling company. After her husband passed
she began her career as a restauranter out of adversity by opening up a 10-table
stand which eventually became a multi-million dollar corporation. Martha would
like to ask her how she overcame adversity and became a successful
businesswoman, all while raising a family and working actively in the Houston
community.

Males, Money & More! is an empowering program to bring financial education
opportunities and college and career awareness to young men in our local
communities. Recently, with support from the East Harris County Empowerment
Council and partners such as Channelview ISD, San Jacinto College, Houston
Health Department, and Eight Million Stories, we were able to educate 250+
middle school boys from East Harris County.
The event included several breakout sessions on financial education, career
exploration, personal development, and leadership skills, combined with powerful

Nina is the founder of Pinnacle Group, a company that she established in 1996
and has served as its Chairman and CEO for over two decades. Pinnacle has grown
from a one-woman IT staffing firm to a successful workforce solutions powerhouse
providing multiple service lines to industry leaders in the telecommunications,
financial services, transportation, and technology industries.
At 15 years old, Nina worked for her family’s travel agency where she learned to
embrace technology’s ability to transform businesses and lives. Pinnacle has
since become a leader in IT talent acquisition and consulting, managed services,
and payrolling and IC compliance.
Nina currently serves on the board of directors at Comerica Bank. In 2019 she

Meet Comerica customer Henry Montemayor! 👋 Henry grew up in a large family of
eight kids, so he learned very early that he had to work to help out. When he
was young, it was common for Henry to have as many as three jobs. After high
school, one of his jobs was at a gas station, and one of his regular customers
was a union bricklayer. He asked him if he’d be interested in learning a trade
and this piqued his curiosity. Henry went in for an interview with Davis Masonry
and was hired. He joined the union apprenticeship program, which meant working
8-hour days and going to school two nights a week. After one year, he was
helping run jobs.
Through Davis Masonry, Henry met his business partner, estimator Dwight Davis.
In August 1994, Henry and Dwight opened Tejano Construction, Inc. where they now
build commercial masonry construction.
Henry’s role was to oversee the job sites, which meant ensuring they had
skilled, reliable help and producing a quality product – which wasn’t always
easy. He knew if he found good help he needed to hang onto them and hope that
they kept enough work going to keep them busy. His partner Dwight Davis retired
last year, and Henry says even he is nearing retirement but not quite ready to
give it all up. Henry plans to downsize a little in the size of jobs they’re
doing, but continue to build projects that will stand the test of time.
If he had any advice to give it would be to learn a trade. The trade industry is
hurting right now. He says we need high school graduates to go to trade schools
and become apprentices. In 3-4 years, you're a journeyman making a decent living
and able to provide a good life for your family.

Meet Comerica customer Jose Manuel Espinoza! 👋 Growing up in the southwest, in
Tucson, AZ, its vibrancy and color was a significant influence on Jose. He
always knew he would be an artist when he grew up. Jose and his sisters had
loving and hard-working parents with just enough discipline to keep him on a
straight path.
After finishing high school, Jose knew he did not want to spend 4 or 5 years at
a standard university studying things that would not apply to his future career.
He looked for a private design college, and to his luck, The Art Center of
Tucson had just opened. He loved learning from working professionals in various
artistic fields.
Jose’s business has evolved and reshaped itself over the years, from strictly
graphic design and paper sculptures to now being about 50% graphic design with
Crema Creative Media and 50% photography with Manny Espinoza. His short-term
goal is to continue to grow the photography side of his business.
The relaxed, outgoing, and friendly Hispanic style has greatly influenced Jose’s
ability to grow and expand his business opportunities and long-lasting
relationships. The culture's vibrant colors and art history have significantly
added to his creative influences.
