Stacey B. August 8 on Yelp Dr. Bruce has been my vet for more than 20 years. That speaks for itself. He is extremely kind, compassionate, and sensitive to my cats as well as my own anxiety around having them examined. It can be stressful for me as well knowing that my cats might be scared. Having Bruce come to my house (as opposed to having to round up the cats and take them into an office) is valuable to me. It cuts the stress in half for both myself and my cats. When Bruce comes to my apartment, he is so patient, gentle, and welcoming to the cats, that they come to him for their exam. He also takes so much time to explain everything he is doing and why in a way that someone who is not a doctor completely can understand. And if you have her pills that they need to be brought into an office setting , he does not hesitate to recommend that. He has always answered my calls. If he does not pick up the phone right away, he responds very quickly (usually within minutes) no matter what time of day or night it is. he really is an angel and works tirelessly in his mission and obvious calling to provide the most thorough and loving care to all pets. He is really extraordinary and I can't say enough good things about Dr. Bruce. Read more Jon W. July 16 on Yelp Dr. Lowenstein is simply wonderful. He has provided A+ veterinary care for our two cats and dog since we moved to NYC in August of 2022. Highly recommend. Read more Ashley N. April 26 on Yelp Nearly 3 years ago, the clinic across the street told my partner and I that we needed to consider euthanizing our 16-year-old cat Evie because of her severe, intractable constipation. She had hit a crisis point and was barely eating. Somehow, in my panic, I stumbled across online reviews for Dr. Lowenstein. Thank goodness I did, because Evie is still living a happy, high-quality life 3 years later. Dr. Lowenstein is incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, but more than anything, he will give as much time as it needs to figure out your pet's problem. He spent a lot of time on the phone with us at the beginning, troubleshooting and adjusting Evie's medications. He also explained everything carefully. The clinic across the street had given us the impression that there was little room for adjustment on the meds. On the contrary-- there was tons of room, and Dr. Lowenstein explained in specific detail what dosage was possible for a cat her size. Ultimately, she just needed time, follow-up, and patience to sort out the issues that had seemed completely unmanageable. It felt almost miraculous, but it was just the kind of good old fashioned medicine that you don't get at vet clinics now. After a couple of years, Evie had another issue come up. This time, she needed a visit to a specialist. We were worried-- one of the reasons why we were happy to have Evie seen at home was because she was utterly terrified by vet visits-- but Dr. Lowenstein was able to send us a prescription that would help keep her calm for the visit. He also knew the best person for her to see, and he got us an appointment much more quickly than we would have been able to on our own. It was an incredibly helpful visit, and with the knowledge we gained there, we have been able to work with Dr. Lowenstein to manage this condition as well. I can't believe how much extra time we've gotten with our beloved girl because of him. She is still full of life and sass and snuggles at 19. When our 14-year-old kitty Jerry was diagnosed with cancer in October, we made the difficult decision to let him live out his life at home, rather than pursue more treatment. We asked Dr. Lowenstein to take over his care, because we knew he would be invested in making sure Jerry was comfortable and happy. Jerry was EXTREMELY aggressive when put in a carrier and at the vet's, so it was a relief to have him seen at home. We came to the end with Jerry this week. Dr. Lowenstein was incredibly helpful in talking through when it might be time. He didn't make the decision for us, but he gave us all the information and things to consider for us to make the decision that we felt was right. He was especially patient and generous during these hard discussions, and helped us find clarity in what is a confusing and overwhelming situation. We were also worried that Jerry, even in a weaker state, might still be aggressive at the end and not go peacefully. Dr. Lowenstein talked through this with us and prescribed medication to calm him beforehand. When he came to help Jerry pass, he took his time to make sure that everything would go smoothly and peacefully, which it did. Afterward, I had some clay ready to make paw print impressions, but after struggling for a bit unsuccessfully, I was about to give up. Dr. Lowenstein offered to help, and even though this isn't something he usually does, he turned out to be great at that, too. He treated Jerry with dignity and care, and I feel so at peace with his end. I really can't recommend Dr. Lowenstein highly enough. He is seasoned and skilled and kind and all kinds of wonderful things, but most of all, he will truly care about your pet, and he'll follow through on that to do whatever is needed to be sure that it gets the best care. January 27 on Yelp Dr. Lowenstein is a patron saint of the animal world. When our cat became ill I discovered him online and immediately made an appointment. He is the MOST responsive, kind and knowledgable vet I have ever known. He came to our apartment several times. He was extremely kind to our 18 year old cat Stuart who became violently ill when he even saw a carrier. He made his last weeks so gentle and bearable. Dr. Lowenstein is amazingly responsive, answering my calls, texts and emails within minutes or hours. His kindness and attentiveness extended to the most excruciatingly difficult moments at the end of our cat's life which happened at home, in a place on our couch that Stuart loved. Dr. Lowenstein made this very difficult moment almost bearable. A million thanks to this amazingly humane and gifted medical genius. Read more Stephanie B. July 22, 2023 on Yelp This review is 5 years late. I called Dr. Lowenstein in late 2017 for help with my beloved 18-year-cat. Boo was diagnosed with IBD/suspected lymphoma, and her condition was worsening. She hated going to the vet (or anywhere,) and, considering the cold weather, I decided no more outside trips. Dr. Lowenstein came over within 24 hours. In the following 5 months, he went above and beyond to help her, and I believe his care extended her life. Even if that was only by months, it truly meant the world to me. And at the end, he was extraordinarily compassionate and kind. In 20+ years of pet ownership, and visiting maybe a dozen vets throughout NYC, no one comes close to the level of care he provided. I really can't recommend him highly enough. I've given his name to anyone who needs a house call vet. Now that my dog is getting a little more difficult to care for, I may be calling him again soon. Read more Sam A. February 22, 2023 on Yelp So much better for my cats! Less stress for them, and Dr Lowenstein treated them with such care. We recently moved and downsized. One of my cats has been so stressed she has licked off much of her hair. There is no way she would have tolerated a visit to an office. Dr. Lowenstein was able to do the labs for both my cats, discussed treatment options for my cat, and followed up. All at lower cost somehow than an office visit. My cat, now on Prozac, delivered from a vet pharmacy, is doing better. So glad I considered a home visit. No going back to an office for us. Read more Vinny A. I had a difficult old cat and several of my friends have cats that go on full attack when they have to go to the vet. Before I met Dr. Lowenstein, it took three people to hold my cat down at the vet, if you can believe it. Using the cat bag with difficult cats is standard practice when the vet needs to check the teeth, etc. Sure, the cat doesn't like it, but that is the only way any vet can check teeth with a difficult cat. Turned out at one point that my cat had to have three teeth removed. She had an infection that had been misdiagnosed by other vets as an ear infection. No animal should be hurt during an exam and no vet should be hurt either. Dr Lowenstein is such a caring pro that I felt I needed to respond to that 2 star review. Bruce Lowenstein brought my cranky old, fighting, ailing cat a year and a half more of a quality life, when I was sure no more could be done for her--having been to several vets prior to finding him. He diagnosed her complex illnesses and adjusted her dosages, and--like a miracle--I got my sweet cat back again. He checked in with me on his own and, when I called, he returned my calls within minutes if he was not wrapped up in helping another animal. I almost could not believe his high level of care and caring until I came to know him better. When the end was in sight, he took the time to observe my cat carefully and to discuss ever possible option. When it became clear what had to be done, he gave me private time to say goodbye and gave her a truly dignified exit from her suffering. He then fashioned a cat bed out of a plastic bag and lay her in that bed in the same comfortable position she was in, telling me that she'd stay in that position as he took her away. Of course, of course, I was broken-hearted, but I felt so clearly that I"d given her a good death, a gracious and perfect goodbye. Dr :Lowenstein called twice to check in on me, and I knew that I'd found one of those rare human beings with a good heart--just the kind of man you want in a story like this. He is a man I trust--- he knew what to do for my cat medically, and he knew what to do for me emotionally. I have nothing but gratitude for him, and he' ll be taking care of my spunky terrier for years to come. After a lifetime with cats, it finally dawned on me that a vet who makes housecalls is a great thing. . It’s bad enough when the cat is sick…they really hate it being put in a cage and schlepped to a strange environment to be examined and treated. So it was great not only to find a vet who makes housecalls, but he’s a really, really good one. The first thing I noticed about Dr. Lowenstein, years ago, was his immediate focus on gaining my cat’s trust…while taking in my reasons for being concerned about the cat…eyeballing Bernadette was just as important as anything I said. The news wasn’t good. Bernadette’s kidneys were failing.. Dr. Lowenstein showed me how to keep Bernadette comfortable…how to give her intravenous fluids….and down the road, when the time came, Dr. Lowenstein came over….went to the spot where she was breathing hard..and gently gave her a shot..and peace. And then, Dr Lowenstein stayed until I was okay… and he also helped me with final arrangements. Yes, Bernadette died at home, in familiar surroundings…with a gentle pinch…from a vet she was familiar with. I will never forget the contrast between the way Bernadette left me, to the horror of Felix…a cat I rushed to the traditional vet practice when he suddenly stopped eating and drinking. If only I’d thought to call Dr. Lowenstein for a house call instead. Felix’s last hours and days were a nightmare of shuttling to and from the vet office…and final advice from the vet office to rush him to Animal Medical Center across town..only prolonged Felix’s suffering…He needed to be euthanized there….in a strange place…with unfamiliar people all around. I don’t care how much equipment they have at a vet’s office, it just doesn’t compare to a vet who’s willing to come to your house…to your pet…and who knows what he’s doing…and brings all the essentials with him…just like doctors used to do…when they made housecalls. My current cat, Javert, is of ACC vintage and unknown origins. And Dr. Loweinstein is Javert’s doctor. ( I learned my lesson with Felix) Dr. Lowenstein comes prepared…up to and including.. a soft enclosure to keep the cat secure and calm…and not a tangle of claws and teeth. He’s not in a rush. He’s not just examining Javert..he’s taking the time to observe his moves and behavior….because, of course, his patient can’t tell him what’s bothering him. So, Dr. Loweinstein will watch..and wait..and examine..and test..until he has the answer. It’s a real contrast to the “business model” vet practices that are opening up all around town. Being a shelter cat, it’s not surprising that Javert has a problem with ear infections. Dr. Loweinstein prescribed 2 meds…showed me how to give them…and called…several times over in the coming days..to ask how things were going. He told me to watch for a recurrence…and kept checking in regularly. Months later, when the problem recurred…and I ran out of the meds…Dr. Lowenstein immediately put in a call to the pharmacy..and made sure they rushed it over…before Javert missed a dose. I’m pretty sure it would have taken longer if I’d gone to a vet practice. Javert is a happy, healthy cat…going into his second year with me…and with Dr. Lowenstein on call, I rest easy. It’s just a great thing to have a vet who makes housecalls…but one this good is priceless ( though his fees are well within reason) Read more Jesse Mineo 13 June 2023 Bruce has been our Veterinarian for over two years. It is so rare to meet a professional with such strong work ethic, accompanied by the the kindest and most empathetic heart. Dr. Lowenstein is one of a kind. He will always return your calls pretty much immediately, even if he is out of town. He will always listen and then give you options, and of course your pet won't have to be stressed by a visit to the vet, because the vet comes to your pet. I recently had a cat with complicated issues, and I don't know how I would have gone through it, without his help, and his guidance. Knowing that Dr. Lowenstein is always only a phone call away gives you such peace of mind, in times that are emotionally very difficult for a pet parent when the health of their friend is deteriorating. I have never experienced this quality of care anywhere. This is precious and priceless for a pet parent. I'm always grateful for his patience, guidance and attention. He is truly a kind soul and cares about my pets. His prices are incredibly reasonable considering the service he offers. For many New Yorkers are pets are our families, and its a jungle of greedy vets out there! As an example, my cat named Fuzz Buzz always had an issue that no vet could figure out. I met Dr. Lowenstein when Fuzz Buzz was about 8 years old. Fuzz had a funny walk, as if his hide legs were riding a bicycle. He got around ok but always lifted his hind legs extra high. Three vets in upper manhattan could never diagnosed his condition. Finally I decided it was a good idea to give a house call vet a try. Carrying FuzzBuzz and my other cat Bird, was a handful for any taxi trip and then I found Dr. Lowenstein. Luckily Dr. Lowenstein's first visit was more economical and more comfortable than the nerve racking visits to the veterinarian clinic. After 8 years of wondering what was wrong with Fuzz Buzz, Dr Lowenstein diagnosed him with cerebellar dysplasia, a neurological disorder that can't be cured. It was a relief to finally understand his condition and to know I had done my best to help him. Today, my other cat, Bird is 22 years old!! thanks to Dr. Lowenstein!! Who monitors Bird's heath closely. Bird has many common problems geriatric cats have. He now weighs 8 lbs, has high thyroid levels, kidney disease, and inflammatory bowel. He takes 2 medicines, food enzymes and extra fiber in his diet. Dr Lowenstein texts and calls me to see how Bird is doing often. Having an older cat with so many issues can be scary. Its a comfort to know Dr. Lowenstein is just a call away! Emily Hampton 15 February 2018 Dr. Lowenstein is an absolutely wonderful vet and I recommend him without reservation. After a visit to another vet, our cat remained in critical condition and we thought she wasn't going to make it. At the recommendation of a friend, I contacted Dr. Lowenstein and he calmly and clearly explained how we could stabilize her condition so we had time to decide what to do next. I believe his advice saved her life. In the following days, Dr. Lowenstein followed up multiple times and answered all of my questions. It is clear that he cares about his patients more than lining his pockets. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, kind, and caring vet, you will find him in Dr. Lowenstein. Learn More WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY Previous “…What was so unique and priceless – – in a city where everybody is so busy – – is that Dr. Lowenstein was in no hurry. He genuinely wanted to help, he cared. And this, to a pet owner is invaluable.” MICHELLE B. “…Dr. Bruce is a true gem, a doctor who obviously treats the pet for the pets sake, not to line his pockets with cash…dr. Bruce is available 24/7, something I wish all doctors would do! And he spends time with me and my pet, more time than any other “traditional office vet” ever has. He is methodical in examining Livvy all while talking to her sweetly through the process (as if she understands, and maybe she does?), and then explaining to me, in detail what is going on, how she’s doing, what needs to be done and when I will receive test results. He promptly returns calls, answers questions and is absolutely trustworthy… I seriously doubt Olivia would be alive today if not for Dr. Bruce and his amazing ability to diagnose and treat her rather complicated condition with accuracy and compassion.” DIANE S. Not only does he understand your pet, Dr. Lowenstein understands you. My cat never was happy about vet trips and over the years I grew less impressed with who had been a very good vet at one time. I felt I was not being heard and as a result, lack of addressing my concerns ended up adversely affecting my cat’s health. Now with Dr. Lowenstein, I can have a real conversation about my cat and he does not treat anything slightly. Since seeing Dr. Lowenstein in early summer, I feel my 14-1/2 year old kitty is back on a better path without receiving a blanket diagnosis because one size truly does not fit all pets, and getting the right tests done to rule things out is helpful. The dr is available by text and phone and is always ready to help. He is really dedicated to animals and it shows. After having a few visits to my other vet this year, the cost is probably not all that much more (by Manhattan standards) and having a pet seen in the comfort of his/her home sans cabs or transportation can’t be beat. Looking forward to our follow up appointment next month. CARI B. When I called to talk to Bruce, my cat was critical, he needed a kitty ER stat and Dr. Bruce calmly explained how urgent it was. He had never even met us yet!… I was reticent to go down the path I had with another elderly cat, one where vet after vet urged me to force care on an animal that should’ve been put down at an earlier time. Dr. Bruce understood my fears, but also spent TIME to discuss with me how I could find out if this was something I could humanely treat…Once reassured…. we forged ahead…. I had nearly gave up on my cat! Dr. Bruce sensibly and rationally addressed my concerns and fears while getting Reggie what he needed. Reggie is now thriving. I cannot thank Dr. Bruce enough for bringing the sanity and compassion back to veterinary care for pets and owners alike. KIM L. Dr. Bruce is the best vet I have found in my 16 years of living in New York City… he is excellent at explaining all the options without losing his patience. This is a great quality since it is confusing and scary to make decisions with our pets health. He also pays close attention to your budget and explaining what would be your best option….. rides to the vet were always so stressful I feel that we save time and money and get better care in our home environment. JENNIFER O. Dr. Lowenstein told me that Mittens was in heart failure. She was critical and needed to go into the hospital or she would pass away… I was not in a financial position to take her to the hospital, my other choice would be to help her pass peacefully. He then explained that we might be able to help her at home and I agreed as he went into critical care emergency mode. Dr. Lowenstein made one call and had an echo (sonogram) done within 90 minutes at my apartment. Once it was confirmed that she was in heart failure, he was so impressive, removing the fluid from her chest and abdomen and allowing her to breath easily again. He spent 6 hours working to save Mittens life. I have never met another doctor who would even think to spend that kind of time to save my cat and he did! 4 months later and Mittens is now sitting on my lap as I write this review…. LISA M. My husband and I were initially referred to Dr. Lowenstein after our 14-year-old dog had a seizure and was subsequently mishandled by a leading Upper Eastside veterinary hospital, causing severe cervical spine complications. We took our dog to yet other well-known UES hospital but their treatment failed, as well…. vet hospital referred us to Dr. Bruce Lowenstein who they said is an excellent emergency medicine…who makes house calls 24/7. Excellent he was…. he immediately went into emergency mode, showing my husband, a physician, where to deliver steroid injections and showing me how to hydrate the dog gently from the syringe. Within about 20 minutes our dog was drinking water. He lived another two years and in good health under the medical supervision of Dr. Lowenstein.… Dr. Lowenstein is also a superb diagnostician. He suspected that our second champion had Cushing’s disease even though he tested negative for it. Years later, it turned out that he was right.” ZOE G. … dr. Bruce has walked me through everything I need to know about how to take the best care of my boy Leo and we could not be more pleased to be in his care. Dr. Bruce is a gem and service like this is not easy to find. MIKE L.
