COVID-19 IN SOUTH AFRICA

6 January 2022

A total of 3 504 554 cases have been reported with 9 860 new cases in the past
24 hours. A reported 3 260 642 people have recovered and there are 92 112
reported deaths, 551 in the past day. This means there are an estimated 151 800
active Covid-19 cases.

Readers are urged to view the reported numbers as indicators of a trend, with
unknown time delays, and not statements of fact. The data is based on
information received from the National Department of Health and the National
Institute for Communicable Diseases. News24 cannot vouch for the accuracy
thereof.

NOTE: Previously incorrect data reported on 23 November 2021, which included 17
718 historic positive cases, has been rectified based on incomplete data
provided by the National Department of Health.

NOTE: Out of 551 deaths recorded on 6 January 2022, only 45 have occurred in the
past 48 hours. This is due to an ongoing audit exercise being conducted by
provinces across the country to address a backlog of COVID-19 mortality and new
cases.

DEATHS OVERVIEW

6 January 2022
There were a reported 551 new deaths in the past 24-hours. This brings the
number of official, reported deaths to 92 112. The most deaths have been
recorded in the Western Cape and Gauteng, with 20 837 and 20 233 deaths
respectively. On average for the past week, 150 deaths were reported per day.

NOTE: The 452 deaths reported from the Eastern Cape on 6 January 2021 are as a
result of data reconciliation between May and November 2020

NATIONAL TESTING

6 January 2022
A total of 21 441 211 coronavirus tests have been conducted to date - 9 868 016
in the public sector and 11 573 195 in the private sector. In the past 24-hours,
22 500 tests were conducted in public laboratories and 24 448 in private
laboratories.

7-DAY AVERAGE: NATIONAL DAILY TESTS: PUBLIC & PRIVATE

For the past seven days an average of 36 192 tests were done every day.

NOTE: Testing data is averaged from 26 November to 2 December 2020 because no
data was reported.

NOTE: The NICD reported a total of 37 875 new cases on 12 December 2021, which
includes 19 840 retrospective cases (due to late reporting by public labs) and
18 035 new cases.

NATIONAL DAILY TESTS - PERCENT POSITIVE

A total of 21% (9 860 cases from 46 948 tests) of tests reported on 6 January
were positive for Covid-19. The NICD, which records positive cases by date of
sample delivery to laboratories, reported a testing positive rate of 31.1% for
the week of 26 December 2021 to 1 January 2022.

NOTE: No testing data was reported from 26 November to 2 December 2020. This
resulted in daily positivity rates for this period being less accurate due to
averaging of test numbers.

NOTE: The NICD reported a total of 37 875 new cases on 12 December 2021, which
includes 19 840 retrospective cases (due to late reporting by public labs) and
18 035 new cases.

HOSPITALISATIONS

6 January 2022
As of 6 January, a total of 479 925 people have been admitted to hospital after
contracting Covid-19, according to data reported to the NICD by 666 hospitals.
358 139 of these patients were discharged, and 97 788 died while in hospital. As
of 6 January, 9 603 people were admitted in hospitals around the country, 689 of
them in ICU and 293 patients were on a ventilator.

NOTE: The sharp increase in current admissions seen on 4 and 5 October 2020 are
due to a large number of public hospitals in Gauteng reporting coronavirus
patient admissions to the NICD. Hospitilisation data reporting has become
fractured and irregular. The graph below depicts the latest available hospital
data.

Historic admissions have been included from 27 January 2021 so there may be an
increase in records in each week as a result.

PROVINCIAL COMPARISONS

6 January 2022
On average over the past seven days, The Western Cape has recorded the highest
number of new Covid-19 cases per day, with a daily average of 2 116 new cases.
It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal, which has recorded on average of 2 055 new
cases in the past seven days.

CASES

Gauteng has recorded the highest number of cumulative Covid-19 cases at 1 143
740 and has an estimated 14 541 active cases. KwaZulu-Natal has recorded the
second highest number of cases with 623 852 and KwaZulu-Natal has the highest
number of active cases at 56 404 active cases.

DEATHS

The Western Cape has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 deaths with 20 837,
followed closely by Gauteng with 20 233. On average, the Western Cape has
recorded the highest number of deaths per day, at 68 per day for the past seven
days, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with (on average) 31 deaths per day in the past
week.
