A reported 3 260 642 people have recovered and there are 92 112 reported deaths, 551 in the past day. This means there are an estimated 151 800 active Covid-19 cases. Readers are urged to view the reported numbers as indicators of a trend, with unknown time delays, and not statements of fact. The data is based on information received from the National Department of Health and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases. News24 cannot vouch for the accuracy thereof. NOTE: Previously incorrect data reported on 23 November 2021, which included 17 718 historic positive cases, has been rectified based on incomplete data provided by the National Department of Health. NOTE: Out of 551 deaths recorded on 6 January 2022, only 45 have occurred in the past 48 hours. This is due to an ongoing audit exercise being conducted by provinces across the country to address a backlog of COVID-19 mortality and new cases. As of 6 January, 9 603 people were admitted in hospitals around the country, 689 of them in ICU and 293 patients were on a ventilator. NOTE: The sharp increase in current admissions seen on 4 and 5 October 2020 are due to a large number of public hospitals in Gauteng reporting coronavirus patient admissions to the NICD. Hospitilisation data reporting has become fractured and irregular. The graph below depicts the latest available hospital data. Historic admissions have been included from 27 January 2021 so there may be an increase in records in each week as a result. It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal, which has recorded on average of 2 055 new cases in the past seven days. CASES Gauteng has recorded the highest number of cumulative Covid-19 cases at 1 143 740 and has an estimated 14 541 active cases. KwaZulu-Natal has recorded the second highest number of cases with 623 852 and KwaZulu-Natal has the highest number of active cases at 56 404 active cases.
