900+ DAILY: THE AMERICAN AIRLINES, DELTA & UNITED HUBS WITH THE MOST FLIGHTS
THIS WEEK

By James Pearson
Published 5 days ago

Half of them still have fewer services than in 2019.

SUMMARY

 * Six US airline hubs have over 900 daily roundtrip services.
 * American Airlines at Dallas/Fort Worth has overtaken Delta Air Lines at
   Atlanta for the top spot.
 * American's growth and Delta's decline resulted in the changed order.

As everyone knows, the US is the world's number one country for flights due to
its enormous domestic market. Between June 7 and 13, 2024, Cirium data shows
that the US has approximately 181,000 scheduled non-stop passenger services – a
quarter of the world's total. It is 80% larger than number two, China. Over 550
US airports have at least one daily roundtrip operation in these seven days.

THE TOP HUBS BY FLIGHTS

The following table shows the six US hubs with at least 900 daily roundtrip
services (take-offs and landings combined) in the analyzed week. As is typically
the case, results would be different if seats for sale and available seat miles
were used instead.

The data is only based on June 7-13; results may differ at other times. Flights
are averaged, so some days will have more services and others fewer. Only the
stated airline's operations (and that of regional partners) are included.

Until now, the airport pair didn't have non-stop flights.

Four of the six hubs are clear fortresses, where an airline controls 70%+ of the
airport. Such domination makes competition difficult for other carriers due to a
lack of spare gates and slots, among other things. The dominant airline
ordinarily keeps fares to/from the hub higher than they might otherwise be,
somewhat offset by a much greater non-stop network.

THE WINNERS & LOSERS VERSUS 2023

Unsurprisingly, the airline hubs all have more daily roundtrip flights than in
the same June week last year. On an absolute basis, the biggest winner is
American at Dallas/Fort Worth, with an additional 200 daily roundtrip flights
(+12%). American's network rose from 229 non-stop routes to 233, with
densification in existing markets much more important than additional
destinations.

 * American has 157 more daily roundtrips at Charlotte (+13%)
 * Delta has 111 more at Atlanta (+7%)
 * United has 106 more at Houston Intercontinental (+12%)
 * United has 93 more at Denver (+10%)
 * United has 53 more at Chicago O'Hare (+6%)

It has 77 routes to these areas in August.

BUT WHAT ABOUT 2019?

It is always worth revisiting what was available in the pre-pandemic 2019. It
often reveals a different picture and helps to see how the recovery is going,
even by as simple a metric as the number of flights.

Cirium shows that the six airline hubs had 8,378 daily two-way flights in the
same week in June 2019. Despite being five years later, there are now 538 fewer
daily roundtrips (-6%). Half of the airline hubs have fewer flights than they
did:

 * Delta at Atlanta (321 fewer daily roundtrip services (!); -16%)
 * United at Chicago O'Hare (-242; -20%)
 * United at Houston Intercontinental (-40; -4%)

Atlanta's significant fall was partly offset by a big jump in seats per flight
from aircraft upgauging and far fewer regional jets. Seats per departure jumped
from 143 to 165, improving economics.

Of the three hubs with more roundtrip flights than in 2019, the winner is
American at Dallas/Fort Worth (+40 daily; +2%). When Delta's changes are
included, it is no wonder Delta at Atlanta is now second by this measure.
