(Photo courtesy of Mazda) MIHO TANKAI, Nikkei staff writerOctober 31, 2023 03:15 JST | China CopyCopied TOKYO -- Mazda Motor plans to launch a plug-in hybrid vehicle in China as early as in 2025, aiming to bolster sales that have lagged due to its limited electrified offerings in the country. The vehicle will be jointly developed with local state-owned partner Changan Automobile. The move comes as plug-in hybrids grow increasingly popular given their advantage over electric vehicles in terms of range and convenience in charging. The two automakers will also work together to develop electric vehicles. Mazda currently does not sell any plug-in models in China, and offers only one EV -- the CX-30 SUV. Plug-ins and EVs together made up about 2% of the 1.1 million units the company sold worldwide in 2022. "My impression is that 70% of new car sales in China are plug-ins," said Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro in comments to Nikkei and other media at the Japan Mobility Show currently underway in Tokyo. Mazda's own new car sales in China were down 10% year-on-year for the April to September period, Moro said. He said the results were "slightly better than expected," buoyed by the launch of the CX-50 SUV and the revamped Mazda 3 compact car. Mazda's plans with Changan come amid a wider reorganizing of its China sales network, having also embarked on a joint venture with state-owned China FAW Group. Changan Mazda announced over the summer that it would make the FAW-Mazda venture a subsidiary, combining the two companies' dealerships. Mazda plans to reduce its dealerships in the country, which numbered about 300 as of March, by 10%.
