If you’re shopping for a mattress online, you may be struggling to decide which
is the best one for you. There are a ton of options to choose from, and it’s not
always easy to know which mattresses are truly the cream of the crop.

We’ve done the research and testing on thousands of mattresses, whittling them
down to our favorites to simplify the process for you. Our team of mattress
experts has years of experience directly testing these beds, and draws upon
thorough background in different mattress construction, materials, and
innovations. We also incorporate the experiences of a diverse group of sleepers
on our testing team — as well as a battery of tests and technologies – to
evaluate how different mattresses feel and perform for all different types of
people.

Determining the best mattress is based partly on what you, the buyer, wants in
your purchase. Some need a bed with great pressure point relief, others require
a mattress that helps soothe persistent back pain. There is no one size fits
all. So our selections show the best in specific categories based on their
performance, construction, and value. And because price is often paramount for
most shoppers, buying a mattress online is usually better value due to fewer
overhead costs. But pay attention to sleep trials on offer and make sure you
choose a mattress that offers at least a 30 day risk-free trial period.

CUT TO THE CHASE – WHAT’S THE BEST MATTRESS OF 2022?

Our top pick strikes the perfect balance across our testing criteria, and it’s
universally enjoyed by the broadest swath of sleepers. So if you prefer to
follow our expertise and don’t need to know the specifics, start your path to
better sleep with the Helix Midnight.

Why It’s Best Overall

Well-rounded performance, quality construction, and affordable pricing put the
Helix Midnight at the top of our best mattress picks. This can be attributed to
its mid-range firmness, which hits the sweet spot between plush and firm, and a
memory foam hybrid construction that earns above-average marks for pressure
relief, motion isolation, breathability, and overall support.

Helix is an online mattress in a box brand that specializes in personalized
comfort with a wide selection of hybrid mattresses, each one designed for people
with specific body types, primary sleep positions, and firmness preferences.
While each Helix model is suitable for certain individuals depending on their
personal criteria, the Helix Midnight is a standout pick thanks to its balanced
feel that combines pressure-relieving memory foam and sturdy coil support – all
at a very reasonable price-point.

What It’s Made of

The first two layers of the Midnight are made of foam. The top layer is Helix’s
Memory Plus Foam, which cradles pressure points while keeping a degree of
responsiveness. The second layer is transition polyfoam that stops significant
sinking into the mattress. Under this is a pocketed coil support core, which
provides a sturdy foundation and a bit of “bounce” to the mattress, making it
easier to move around on.

How It Performed

The Helix Midnight has a medium firm (6) feel, and with its blend of pressure
relief and ease of movement on the mattress, it is a solid choice for people in
many sleeping positions. It’s also a hit with combination sleepers who need to
be able to smoothly switch their posture during the night.

The Midnight is a good all-around bed that performed well across our various
testing categories. The foam layers alleviate pressure and isolate motion well,
while the coils help the mattress maintain a comfortable temperature and help
you move across the surface with ease.

Customers can fill out a survey on the company’s website to determine which
mattress best meets their needs, so this may be a good option if the Midnight
sounds too soft or too firm. The sleep trial for the Midnight is 100 nights, and
Helix backs the mattress with a 10-year warranty that covers defects in
materials and manufacturing.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“The Helix Midnight had the right level of response combined with an easy hug on
my shoulders and hips, which are often pain points for folks on the lighter
weight end of the spectrum. A cool sleep, and I never felt my partner move
once.”

The DreamCloud’s luxurious construction utilizes multiple types of foam along
with pocketed coils to deliver a comfortable combination of contouring, support,
and responsiveness. This makes the mattress a great option for people who tend
to sink too deeply into their mattress, as well as those who don’t enjoy overly
firm sleep surfaces.

What It’s Made of

The DreamCloud starts with a layer of polyfoam quilted into the top of the bed’s
cashmere blend cover. A two-tiered comfort system follows first with a layer of
gel-infused memory foam. This layer keeps the body supported through modest
cradling of heavier zones and pressure points. The next layer is a polyfoam that
has slightly less contouring and more bounce, offering a welcome balance to the
memory foam’s feel.

The support core is made with individually-wrapped coils that are set up into
zones to better adapt to the body and how its weight is placed on the mattress.
The springs shore up stability at the edge and create notable bounce that
enhances ease of movement across the whole mattress surface. A low-profile layer
of high-density polyfoam goes underneath the coils to fortify the mattress and
limit noise from the coils.

How It Performed

The DreamCloud’s medium firm (6) feel can fit the needs of many sleepers and is
often a top choice for side and back sleepers. The balanced performance serves
most combination sleepers and couples as well.

Hybrids are considered one of the best mattress types for hot sleepers, and this
can be attributed to pocketed coil support cores that circulate air and help
maintain a cool interior temperature. The DreamCloud takes this concept a bit
further with a luxury cover made from blended cashmere, a material renowned for
natural breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities.

The DreamCloud’s sleep trial lasts for a full year, giving customers 365 nights
to truly see how well it works for them. Over the long haul, customers can rest
easy knowing that they are covered by DreamCloud’s lifetime warranty.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“The DreamCloud is a good compromise for anyone who needs extra support but also
likes a plusher feel. The foam layers gave ample cushioning for my body, but I
never felt like I was sinking into the mattress.”

The Nectar is a stellar example of a high-quality mattress that won’t break the
bank. Nectar Sleep also offers other perks to incentivize shoppers on a budget,
such as a generous sleep trial and hassle-free warranty coverage for as long as
you own the mattress.

What It’s Made of

The Nectar features a 3-inch comfort layer of memory foam over transitional and
support layers made of denser polyfoam. Although the mattress feels very
supportive, you’ll feel deep body-contouring from the first layer that can be
likened to sleeping “in” – as opposed to sleeping “on” – the mattress. A quilted
cover accentuates the comfortable design by creating a luxuriously plush feel on
the surface.

How It Performed

The Nectar’s conforming properties make it a good match for side sleepers of all
sizes. Many back and stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds should also
feel comfortable on this mattress.

The Nectar is serves sleepers well with a balanced, mid-level firmness and
materials that offer comfortable plushness without sacrificing support. The
mattress has earned strong ratings across performance categories such as
pressure relief, motion isolation, and temperature control, yet it costs much
less than the average memory foam model.

Nectar’s 365-night sleep trial, which is among the longest in the industry, and
lifetime warranty are exclamation points on the value offered by this quality
mattress that is available at a very accessible price point.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“This is a mattress made for memory foam lovers. I felt close contouring from
head to toe, but the Nectar delivered great support and the foam didn’t make me
overheat.”

The Saatva Classic blends the superior support of traditional innersprings with
the enhanced comfort and sophisticated features of a modern hybrid mattress. The
result is a luxurious Euro-top design that alleviates pressure without
sacrificing sturdiness or temperature regulation. Multiple firmness and
thickness options also make the Classic an appealing choice for people across a
wide range of body types and sleep positions.

What It’s Made of

The top of the Saatva mattress utilizes several types of foam, including
specialty polyfoam as well as a memory foam pad under the lumbar area. These
foams are quilted into the Euro-top made with smooth and breathable organic
cotton.

Underneath the Euro-top is a coil-on-coil interior design. The top layer of
coils is four inches thick, and the coils are individually-wrapped to give them
enhanced ability to tailor to the body and decrease motion transfer. The second
coil layer forms the mattress support core, and it is either 4.5 or 7.5 inches
depending on the model that you select. This layer uses hefty 13-gauge springs
that are bolstered by a high-density foam encasement around the perimeter for
better edge support.

How It Performed

In this mattress construction, the two coils layers create responsiveness and
make it easy to move on the bed while also lightly contouring to the body for
pressure point cushioning. Plenty of airflow through the coils keeps this
mattress cool through the night.

Firmness options include soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8), allowing any
customer to choose what best suits their preferences.

Installation plus haul-away of an old mattress, known as White Glove delivery,
is included free of charge with each purchase. The mattress is also backed by a
180-night sleep trial (with a $99 return shipping fee) and a 15-year warranty.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

”The Saatva Classic is one of the sturdiest mattresses I’ve ever tested. The
coil layers make the surface feel incredibly supportive and responsive, but the
mattress didn’t feel too stiff like a lot of traditional innersprings on the
market.”

The WinkBed is a hybrid model with four available firmness options. With a
medium soft feel that ranks as a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale, the Softer
WinkBed has the most cushioning of any WinkBed model, making it a worthwhile
pick for side sleepers of any body type. The mattress contours closely to your
hips and shoulders while still promoting proper spinal alignment.

What It’s Made of

The Softer WinkBed’s construction begins with a breathable Tencel cover and
plush Euro-Top that’s made from gel-infused polyfoam. The gel helps draw heat
and moisture away from your body, while the polyfoam cradles your hips and
shoulders to relieve pressure point discomfort. Another layer of polyfoam rests
beneath the Euro-top, creating a comfortable buffer that prevents you from
sinking too deeply into the mattress.

The support core features individually wrapped pocketed coils. The coils are
arranged into five zones that provide increased support under your midsection
and less pushback under lighter parts of your body. The coils have a higher
gauge around the perimeter, giving this model robust edge support and a surface
that’s easy to move on top of.

How It Performed

Our in-house testing determined that side sleepers from all weight groups
enjoyed the Softer WinkBed, and those weighing less than 130 pounds especially
liked how well the Euro-top cradled their hips and shoulders.

This model also scored well in the motion isolation category, as the thick foam
comfort system absorbs motion before it has a chance to transfer across the
bed’s surface. Since the pocketed coils are individually wrapped, they also help
cut down on motion transfer by moving independently from one another. Couples
should be able to successfully use this mattress without disturbing their
partner on the other side of the bed.

Shoppers who want to try the Softer WinkBed can take advantage of the 120-night
sleep trial. Those who want to initiate a return must try their mattress for at
least 30-days. The mattress carries a generous lifetime warranty and ships free
within the contiguous U.S.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“The Softer WinkBed has everything side sleepers want – a plush surface that
gets rid of pressure points, strong support that doesn’t let their hips sink too
deeply, and cooling features that prevent overheating.”

The Helix Dusk Luxe is a hybrid model that balances strong support with
cushioning layers. The medium firm (6) feel and well-rounded design make this a
versatile model that should appeal to a wide variety of people. This mattress
may be attractive to co-sleepers looking for a happy medium to accommodate
different body types and sleep preferences.

What It’s Made of

One of this mattress’ standout features is the pillow-top cover, which creates
an instantly plush surface to cradle your body. This sits atop a layer of higher
density polyfoam, followed by a thicker layer of memory foam that contours the
body. A transitional polyfoam layer further promotes contouring but is also a
bit firmer to keep the body from sinking too deep. The bed’s strongest support
comes from the core of pocketed coils, which are specially zoned to enhance
lumbar support and help ensure healthy spinal alignment.

How It Performed

The mix of memory foam and polyfoam layers deliver strong pressure relief while
protecting against excessive sinkage. The Dusk Luxe is a good fit for people who
enjoy a little bit of body hug from foam, but not too much. While the coils give
the bed a moderately bouncy feel, the thick foam comfort system absorbs a lot of
motion. This may appeal to couples who need a bed that prevents motion from
easily transferring across the surface. The bed is well suited for most side
sleepers, but back and stomach sleepers up to 230 pounds should also find the
bed fairly comfortable.

Helix offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty for customers who
decide to keep the bed. Shipping is free to all 50 states.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“It’s hard to find a bed that makes both co-sleepers happy, but the Helix Dusk
Luxe has a really well-rounded design that should satisfy lots of couples, even
if their sleep needs are different.”

Those who experience back pain can benefit from a mattress that provides both
even spinal support and top-notch pressure point relief. Achieving this balance
can be difficult, which is what sets the WinkBed apart from many of its
competitors. This hybrid mattress is available in four firmness levels, with the
Luxury Firm model a standout option for people with back pain.

What It’s Made of

The Luxury Firm has a medium firm feel that ranks as a 6 out of 10 on the
firmness scale. The mattress’ top layer is a plush Euro-top that has gel-infused
polyfoam quilted directly into its surface to help relieve pressure point
discomfort. The adaptive polyfoam contours closely to your body, helping to
cushion joints and evenly disperse your weight.

A transitional polyfoam layer acts as a comfortable buffer between the Euro-top
and support system. The pocketed coil support core is divided into different
zones based on gauge and strength. Thicker coils wrap around the perimeter to
limit sinkage and help you feel more stable sleeping close to the edges, while
thinner interior coils offer adequate support without making the mattress feel
too stiff.

How It Performed

The polyfoam and pocketed coils create a luxe feel that’s well-balanced and
welcoming. This set of features allows the mattress to isolate motion, stay
cool, and facilitate sexual activity better than most hybrids on the market. The
WinkBed’s substantial support and moderate contouring make it an excellent pick
for many sleepers who feel back pain, but especially those who weigh under 230
pounds.

The Winkbed comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a dependable lifetime
warranty. Shipping is free within the contiguous U.S.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“Thanks to the combination of adaptive polyfoam and strong coils, I felt very
comfortable on the Luxury Firm WinkBed. Plenty of cushioning to relieve
pressure, but enough response to facilitate movement and protect the edges when
I got on and off the mattress.”

Side sleepers generally need more cushioning for the shoulders and hips than
those who prefer other sleep positions. This extra padding can improve your
overall spinal alignment and reduce pressure points in the process. The Nolah
Evolution 15 is available in three firmness levels, so side sleepers across
different weight groups can all find a comfortable option.

What It’s Made of

The Nolah Evolution 15 features a pillow-top padded with foam. The mattress also
contains a comfort layer of AirFoamICE, a proprietary polyfoam. An additional
polyfoam layer offers transitional support and prevents sleepers from sagging
excessively.

The support core contains pocketed coils divided into zones based on your body
weight, so you’ll receive more reinforcement around your midsection and gentle
cradling for lighter areas of your body. Thicker coils also reinforce the
perimeter.

How It Performed

The Nolah Evolution 15 is a great choice for hot sleepers. The top foam layer
contours to the body much like memory foam without sleeping too hot thanks to
graphite infused into the material. The coils promote airflow for added cooling,
as well. The coils also protect the perimeter quite well, providing push-back
and preventing sinkage when you’re getting in and out of bed or sleeping close
to the edges.

Those who weigh less than 130 pounds will likely prefer the plush (5) feel due
to its deeper contouring, while sleepers who weigh more may receive more support
from the luxury firm (6) or firm (7) models. The zoned coils provide enhanced
lower back support and hip support, along with gentler cradling for the head and
shoulders. Thanks to this broad selection, most people should be able to find a
firmness level for the Evolution 15 that improves their alignment and reduces
pressure in sensitive areas along the spine.

Nolah provides free ground shipping to all customers in the contiguous U.S.
You’ll receive a sleep trial with your order that spans 120 nights in length.
The mattress is also backed by a lifetime warranty that covers structural
defects for as long as you own it.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

”Thick mattresses often feel too soft, but I didn’t think this was the case with
the Evolution 15. The foam layers provide decent support and the coils make the
mattress feel quite stable.”

Bear offers a lineup of mattresses that each satisfy different sleep needs and
budgets. The Bear Elite Hybrid is the brand’s luxury model, featuring a hybrid
design that excels in several performance categories. Hot sleepers should
especially find this model appealing, thanks to cooling features built into the
design.

What It’s Made of

The Elite Hybrid is available in three firmness options – medium (5), medium
firm (6), and firm (8). All variations feature a quilted cover made of polyester
blend fabric and phase change material, as well as a cooling Celliant fiber. The
comfort system is comprised of a memory foam layer that excels in body
contouring, coupled with a zoned polyfoam layer that provides enhanced pressure
relief and lumbar support. A support core made of pocketed coils provides a
supportive base.

How It Performed

With three firmness levels to pick from, shoppers of all body types should find
a model that suits them. Back and stomach sleepers will gravitate toward the
firmer models, which provide better spinal alignment for these sleep positions,
while side sleepers may opt for the beds with softer, well-cushioned surfaces,
to receive pressure relief in the shoulders and hips.

Regardless of firmness level, all hot sleepers should sleep comfortably on the
Elite Hybrid. The phase change material and Celliant fiber in the cover are
designed to keep the surface cool, and ample air flows through the coils to
further enhance cooling. The polyfoam layer is also cut with channels that help
air circulate through the foam, which would otherwise trap heat.

Bear customers receive a 120-night sleep trial with their purchase and are
eligible for a full refund on beds returned after 30 nights. Customers also
receive a lifetime warranty. Shoppers in the contiguous U.S. receive free
shipping.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“The Elite Hybrid goes the extra mile to keep sleepers cool at night. Our
testers were impressed with the cooling features packed into this bed.”

The Nectar Premier Copper is an all-foam bed with a medium firm (6) feel that
can accommodate a wide range of sleepers with different body types and needs.
The thick memory foam layer on top offers superior relief for sleepers who wake
up with aches and pains related to pressure buildup.

What It’s Made of

The bed begins with an unusually thick layer of memory foam that closely
contours the body, catering to sleepers who enjoy foam beds with a deep hug.
Beneath is a thin layer of polyfoam that has a firmer and more responsive feel,
which helps create a barrier between the support core and the comfort layer. The
core is composed of high-density polyfoam, providing support and durability for
the entire bed. The quilted cover is a polyester blend fabric infused with
copper fibers meant to combat heat retention, which is a known problem with
all-foam beds. The memory foam also features phase change material to further
regulate temperature.

How It Performed

The memory foam’s close conforming delivers excellent pressure relief to areas
like the hips, shoulders, and spine. The foam also excels at absorbing movement,
so that co-sleepers won’t feel each other’s movements at night. Side sleepers in
all weight groups benefit the most from the Nectar Premier Copper, since this
sleep position exerts a lot of pressure on the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers
up to 230 pounds and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds may also find the bed
comfortable, but those in heavier weight categories may prefer a firmer bed to
receive adequate support.

Customers can try out the mattress for 365 nights and may return the mattress
during this timeframe, after a 30-day break-in period. Shipping is free to the
contiguous U.S., and the mattress also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“The memory foam in the Premier Copper is thicker than most foam beds we’ve
tested, so the pressure relief and motion isolation are definitely superior
compared to a lot of competing models.”

Most mattresses made today are considered middle of the road in terms of
firmness, leaving few options for those who prefer an extra firm feel for their
sleep surface. The Plank Luxe Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding should cater to these
sleepers thanks to its flippable design with a firm (7) feel on one side and an
extra firm (9) feel on the other. We found both surfaces highly supportive, and
the mattress was a big hit with the testers on our team who weigh more than 230
pounds.

What It’s Made of

The Luxe Hybrid’s firm side features plush fibers quilted into the surface,
followed by layers of responsive TitanFlex foam and high-density polyfoam. Our
testers felt gentle cushioning and contouring, along with a light bounce. The
extra firm side has a thinner quilting layer and does not contain any TitanFlex,
resulting in a very supportive feel with little to no sinkage. Pocketed coils
located between the foam layers serve as the support core of the mattress,
regardless of which side you use.

The Luxe Hybrid is encased in a breathable knit cover. You have the option of
including a panel of phase change material (PCM) on each side of the mattress.
PCM is engineered to absorb and release heat in order to maintain a cool surface
at all times. These panels are sewn into the cover, and increase the sticker
price by $100 to $200.

How It Performed

As an exceptionally firm two-sided mattress, the Luxe Hybrid appealed to the
back and stomach sleepers on our team who weigh at least 130 pounds. Most of
these testers agreed the firm side offered the best balance of contouring and
support, but some weighing more than 230 pounds also found the extra firm side
comfortable. The edges felt stable and didn’t sink much, and we didn’t encounter
any difficulty moving across either surface.

Cooling is another major strength of the Luxe Hybrid. Air circulates freely
through the coil system to help the mattress maintain a comfortable temperature.
Thanks to the even support on both sides, we also noticed plenty of surface
airflow to offset heat retention in the foam layers. We tested the mattress with
and without the PCM panels. While the standard models provide decent temperature
regulation, those who enjoy bursts of cooling while they sleep should opt for
the panels.

The Luxe Hybrid’s price-point is affordable compared to other hybrids sold
today, and standard shipping is free for customers in the contiguous U.S. The
mattress is available in 12 different sizes, including a split California king
for couples who share adjustable beds and several RV-friendly options. All
orders include 120-night sleep trials and 10-year manufacturer’s warranties.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“Anyone seeking a firmer-than-average mattress should definitely check out the
Plank Luxe Hybrid. Whether you want a traditional firm feel or an extra firm
that feels even as a board, this mattress has got you covered.”

One of GhostBed’s newest mattresses is part of an exclusive collaboration with
tennis superstar Venus Williams. Created with physically active people in mind,
the Venus Williams Legend Hybrid is engineered to improve circulation and
promote physical recovery. This process is intended to relieve soreness and
stiffness overnight and help you feel refreshed in the morning.

What It’s Made of

The Venus Williams Legend Hybrid begins with a comfort layer of memory foam. The
foam is infused with Venus FIT technology, which is designed to absorb your body
heat, convert it into infrared energy, and transmit this energy back into your
body through your skin. A cooling gel treatment also helps regulate the surface
temperature. The next layer of polyfoam provides transitional support by
cushioning the body and serving as a buffer between you and the support core.

Pocketed coils over a high-density foam base provide excellent overall stability
for the mattress. The coils are reinforced along the perimeter to limit sinkage
when you sleep close to the edges or get in and out of bed. A breathable cover
encases the entire mattress. The cover fabric is a blend of polyester and
REPREVE material, the latter of which is derived from recycled plastic bottles.

How It Performed

The Venus Williams Legend Hybrid is medium firm (6). During our tests, the
mattress earned its most favorable ratings from side sleepers weighing at least
130 pounds and back sleepers up to 230 pounds. These testers noted a comfortable
balance of cushioning for their bodies and even support from the base layers.
Added reinforcement along the perimeter also made us feel secure moving across
the surface and lying close to the edges.

The FIT technology performed well during the pressure relief portion of our
mattress tests. Most of our testers reported little to no soreness in the
shoulders, hips, and other areas where pressure tends to occur. This component
also helps the foam layer sleep exceptionally cool. We noticed very little heat
buildup despite the memory foam’s close contouring. The foam layers absorb
movement well and the coils don’t produce much motion transfer, so motion
isolation was another performance area where the mattress excelled.

GhostBed offers free ground shipping to all customers in the contiguous U.S.
Your order includes a 101-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty against
structural defects. The Venus Williams Legend collection also includes an
all-foam model.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“A perfectly balanced feel and recovery-promoting technology make the Venus
Williams Legend Hybrid uniquely suited for people with active lifestyles. We
also found the mattress to sleep exceptionally cool.”

The Solaire by Saatva is a luxury airbed that allows you to adjust the firmness
with the push of a button. Thanks to the dual-chamber design, you and your
partner can customize how your side of the bed feels without disturbing the
other person. Premium comfort layer materials further elevate the Solaire over
many competing airbed models.

What It’s Made of

The Solaire features a Euro-top cover cushioned with comfort layers of Talalay
latex and gel-infused memory foam. Comparatively, most airbeds do not contain
much padding near the surface, so the Solaire offers above-average cushioning
and responsiveness. A moisture pad beneath the memory foam is intended to
safeguard the air chambers against bacteria and other contaminants.

Each side of the mattress is equipped with its own vulcanized rubber air
chamber. Using the wired remote, you can choose from 50 different firmness
levels ranging from soft (3) to firm (7). The air inflator and hoses are located
inside the mattress beneath the chambers. A cover made of organic cotton encases
the entire mattress.

How It Performed

Adjustable firmness is a defining strength of the Solaire. The ability to select
from dozens of different feels makes the mattress suitable for almost anyone
regardless of their body type, sleep position, or firmness preferences. All of
our testers were able to find at least one firmness level that felt comfortable.
We also enjoyed the latex-over-foam comfort system, which feels responsive when
you get into bed and then contours evenly as your body settles.

The controls are easy to use and the electrical components don’t produce
excessive noise, so we don’t foresee major sleep disruptions. The Solaire also
sleeps cool thanks to the breathable cover, ventilated comfort layer, and steady
airflow throughout the support core.

The Solaire is available in eight sizes, including a split king and split
California king for couples with adjustable beds. For standard sizes, you can
also select the “Upper-Flex” option, which divides the top half of the mattress
down the middle. The Upper-Flex is exclusively compatible with adjustable beds
from Saatva.

All orders in the contiguous U.S. qualify for free White Glove delivery, which
includes full setup in a room of your choice and removal of your old mattress
and box spring upon request. The Solaire is backed by a 180-night sleep trial
and a 25-year warranty.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“The Solaire is luxurious even by airbed standards and the intuitive controls
make it easy to adjust the mattress based on your personal preferences. We also
liked the ample cushioning, which is somewhat rare for this mattress type.”

The Birch Mattress is an excellent example of a mattress made from eco-friendly
components that relieves pressure buildup, promotes spinal alignment, holds up
well over time, and carries a reasonable sticker price. Side sleepers or those
with pressure induced pain in their joints may appreciate the mattress’ gentle
cradling.

What It’s Made of

The Birch has two comfort layers under an organic cotton cover. The first layer
is made from a wool blend, a breathable material that wicks moisture away from
the surface. The second layer consists of natural Talalay latex, a breathable
and responsive foam that conforms moderately to the sleepers body.

Under these layers is a substantial pocketed coil support core. These coils are
a lower-gauge, meaning they’re thicker and more durable. A reinforced perimeter
allows sleepers to comfortably sit or lay near the edges without feeling like
they will slip off. Under the coils is a layer of natural wool batting.

How It Performed

The Birch’s balance of responsiveness and pressure-relief makes it a standout
choice for side sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. These sleepers should
enjoy the modest contouring with the supportive feel to keep their hips and
shoulders aligned with the spine. Back sleepers between 130 and 230 pound and
stomach sleepers who weigh up to 230 pounds should also appreciate the medium
firm feel and responsiveness. This combination of features helps keep back and
stomach sleepers’ midsections aligned with the rest of the body.

Performance-wise, the Birch stands out above the crowd in durability,
temperature control, and ease of movement. As a medium firm mattress that
doesn’t conform too closely, the Birch should sufficiently support most
sleepers. Each coil is individually pocketed, which improves motion isolation.

Birch offers a 100 night sleep trial and a 25 year warranty, which is an above
average guarantee in the mattress world. Plus, they ship free to all 50 US
states.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“Anyone who likes bouncy mattresses should definitely give the Birch a try. I
noticed very little resistance as I moved across the surface and the edges
barely sank at all.”

   coil-on-coil support
 * Steady airflow and breathable cover fabric ensure above-average cooling
 * Reinforced perimeter coils push back against compression and reduce sinkage

The Leesa Legend is a luxury hybrid with a balanced medium firm (6) feel that
should appeal to people across different weight and sleep position categories.
In particular, the mattress is well-suited to stomach sleepers – a notoriously
difficult crowd to please due to the pressure buildup that often occurs with
this position. We found that the Legend’s foam layers provide adequate
cushioning, but sinkage was a non-issue for our testers thanks to the
coil-on-coil support system.

What It’s Made of

The Legend’s top layer is composed of polyfoam ventilated with large holes
intended to promote airflow. A second comfort layer of medium-density memory
foam adds extra cushioning to the sleep surface. The transitional layer contains
pocketed minicoils padded with a foam panel beneath the midsection, which should
provide extra reinforcement to the chest, stomach, and hips while gently
cradling lighter areas of the body.

The support core features zoned, 6-inch pocketed coils that feel sturdier around
the perimeter to reduce sinkage when you get in and out of bed. Layers of
high-density foam rest above and below the coils for extra stability. Although
the mattress is medium firm (6), its coil-on-coil design creates a responsive
feel with noticeable bounce across the surface. The cover is made from a blend
of organic cotton, rayon, moisture-wicking merino wool, PES polyester from
recycled plastic bottles, and a touch of spandex to give the fabric a stretchy
feel.

How It Performed

The Legend was popular with our testers across the board. In particular, side
sleepers weighing at least 130 pounds and back and stomach sleepers up to 230
pounds found the mattress comfortable and supportive in equal measure. Cooling
is another major strength thanks to the steady air circulation between the coils
and ventilated polyfoam layer. Merino wool in the cover also helps with moisture
control.

We’ve found that the coil-on-coil construction gives the Legend a distinct feel,
especially with zoning in the minicoils and a mixed-foam comfort system to
cushion the body. Moving across the surface wasn’t too difficult for most of our
testers and the edges feel sturdy, but we didn’t detect much transfer during our
motion isolation tests and none of our testers experienced excessive pressure
buildup.

The Legend is priced competitively for a hybrid and shipping is free of charge
for customers in all 50 states. Leesa backs this mattress with a 100-night trial
period and 10-year warranty against structural defects. You can also purchase an
accident protection plan that covers stains, ripped cover fabric, and other
types of incidental damage that aren’t covered under the standard warranty.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“One of the more balanced hybrids we’ve tested, the Legend is a true
crowd-pleaser that should accommodate a wide range of sleepers without sinking
too much or feeling excessively firm. The mattress also excels at cooling and
temperature control.”

Due to its unique flippable design, the Layla Hybrid offers owners two firmness
levels in one mattress: medium soft (4) and firm (7). This flexible design
accommodates a diverse range of sleepers, ensuring optimal support and pressure
relief for most people regardless of body type or preferred sleep position. It’s
especially suitable for sleepers who experience painful pressure buildup in the
hips and shoulders.

What It’s Made of

The mattress is constructed with a comfort layer on either side, consisting of
low-density memory foam infused with copper meant to help keep the bed’s surface
cool. Meanwhile the shared pocketed coil support core allows air to freely
circulate, which further prevents heat buildup. The bed also features a
reinforced perimeter, ensuring sleepers can comfortably use the entire sleep
surface without experiencing a feeling of “roll-off.” A breathable cover made
from a stretchy polyester-viscose blend encases the entire mattress.

How It Performed

Individuals of all sizes and sleep positions experience good spinal alignment on
the Layla Hybrid thanks to the zoned polyfoam transitional layer on each side,
which supports the heavier areas of the body, such as the hips and shoulders,
while cushioning the head and neck. The firm side is more popular among heavier
sleepers, who experience better spinal alignment and support beneath their hips
and shoulders, while sleepers up to 230 pounds appreciate the medium side’s deep
pressure relieving cradle.

Layla offers free shipping for customers who reside in the contiguous U.S. and
backs the mattress with a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

Lab Notes – What Our Testers Thought

“After testing out the Layla Hybrid, we think this is an excellent choice for
side sleepers. The thick memory foam on the soft side is great at easing
pressure off the shoulders and hips. We also recommend the bed for couples,
since it prevents motion from rippling across the bed.”

WHY YOU CAN TRUST US

We’ve personally tested hundreds of mattresses, evaluating them for a wide range
of performance metrics that can affect your sleep experience. These metrics
include durability, pressure relief, temperature control, edge support, and ease
of movement. We drew from these evaluations to determine the mattresses chosen
for each category.

HOW WE EVALUATED THESE MATTRESSES

Our hands-on testing involves testers not only physically lying on each mattress
but also changing positions and getting in and out of bed. We use temperature
sensors to test heating and cooling, and body-mapping tools for determining
areas where people experience pressure points. Our top picks reflect the models
that scored the highest in each performance category. We will continue to update
this page as mattresses are re-tested and new models are introduced.

If you would like more information about our product research methodology, read
on:

 * Motion Isolation: Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress absorbs
movement and prevents it from transferring across the surface. Mattresses
with thicker comfort layers tend to isolate more motion, great for those who
are frequently disturbed by a sleep partner’s movement.
 * Temperature Control: A temperature-controlled mattress should ensure the
sleeper is not too hot or cold. Mattresses made with breathable materials
like cotton, wool, latex, and coils are great at regulating temperature.
 * Pressure Relief: A pressure-relieving mattress contours the body to reduce
pressure buildup in the joints. Usually these mattresses have thicker memory
foam comfort layers that slowly adapt to the body.
 * Off-Gassing: Mattresses in a box and those made with synthetic materials are
more prone to off-gassing odors. These odors are due to volatile organic
compound (VOC) emissions, which are relatively harmless but can be annoying.
 * Ease of Movement: Mattresses that perform well in this category usually have
responsive surfaces that allow sleepers to move without restriction.
Combination sleepers benefit from a mattress with high marks in ease of
   movement.
 * Edge Support: Edge support refers to a mattress’ weight-bearing capabilities
along the perimeter. A mattress with supportive edges allows sleepers to lie
closer to the edge, increasing the bed’s overall usability.
 * Sex: Many sleepers use their mattresses not only for sleep but also for sex.
Mattresses with high rankings in ease of movement, edge support, and
temperature control also tend to perform well in this category.
 * Body Weight: Body weight is one of many factors to consider when choosing
your ideal firmness level. Sleeping position and sleep preferences are also
important, so we recommend trying multiple models to find the most
   comfortable feel.

Defining the ideal mattress is extremely subjective. Every sleeper has their own
idea of the perfect firmness level. Optimal support and bounce can depend on a
person’s sleeping position and body weight. The right mattress can also vary
based on whether someone shares a bed, whether they sleep hot, and of course,
their budget.

Given all these factors, it’s impossible to say that there’s one single best
mattress. For that reason, we’ve broken our top picks into individual categories
so that you can find the best bets among specific mattress types and aspects of
mattress performance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 * WHAT MATTRESS IS BEST FOR ME?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a new mattress. One of the
most important considerations is firmness level. Some people prefer a softer
mattress that contours closely to the body, while others enjoy firmer
mattresses that provide sturdy support. Your ideal firmness will likely
depend on your body type and preferred sleep position. If you share your bed
with someone who has different firmness preferences, then a dual-firmness
mattress with a different feel on each side may be most suitable.

You will want to consider performance areas, as well. If you tend to sleep
hot, a mattress constructed with breathable materials that promote airflow
and don’t absorb excess heat will probably be the best options. If you tend
to sleep near the edges of your bed, then you may need a mattress with strong
edge support as opposed to one that sags along the perimeter when pressure is
exerted. Those who feel sharp pressure points along the spine should look
into mattresses that cushion and conform to the body, while couples who
prefer bouncy mattresses for sex may want a more responsive model instead.

Lastly, you should take pricing into account. A new mattress can cost
anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand. The construction of
a mattress often dictates the sticker price. Foam beds and traditional
innersprings are usually the most affordable options, all-latex models and
hybrids tend to be middle of the road, and airbeds cost the most. If you feel
like you need extra time to test out the mattress before deciding whether to
keep it, you should consider buying from a brand that offers a sleep trial of
   at least 120 nights.

 * WHAT MATTRESS TYPES ARE MOST COMFORTABLE?

Whether or not you find a mattress comfortable is deeply personal and due to
factors like your body shape and preferred sleeping position. For example, a
back sleeper who weighs over 230 pounds will usually prefer a significantly
firmer mattress than someone who weighs less than 130 pounds and sleeps on
   their side.

Mattresses can also feel comfortable in the short term but uncomfortable
after several hours or even days, making it difficult to choose the right
mattress without sleeping on it. Instead of relying on their own sense of
what is “comfortable”, customers should carefully consider what their body
requires before buying a new mattress. It’s helpful to choose a mattress with
a sleep trial, as these allow you to double-check that your new bed is
comfortable before committing to the purchase.

 * WHAT ARE THE BEST MATTRESSES FOR SIDE SLEEPERS?

Most people who sleep on their side prefer foam, memory foam, or hybrid
mattresses. Side sleepers are prone to developing pressure points at their
hip and shoulder, making it difficult to sleep or trigger next-day aches and
   pains.

Mattresses with above-average pressure relief contour gently against these
potential pressure points regardless of the mattress’s overall firmness
level, providing side sleepers with both comfort and support. While not all
foam or foam hybrid mattresses are pressure relieving enough for side
sleepers, they tend to perform significantly better in this category than
   innerspring or even latex beds.

 * WHAT ARE THE BEST MATTRESSES FOR BACK PAIN?

There are features that people with back pain tend to universally appreciate
   — these include lumbar padding, ergonomically zoned support systems, and
sturdy edge support. Side sleepers with shoulder or upper back pain should
also consider the pressure relieving qualities of a mattress before buying
since poor pressure relief can lead to tension in these areas.

The best mattress of 2022 for back pain is one that encourages correct spinal
alignment and provides excellent support for both your body type and
preferred sleeping position. While some specific mattresses are popular among
people with back pain, an ideal model for one person may leave another
   feeling worse the next day.

 * WHAT ARE THE BEST MATTRESSES FOR HOT SLEEPERS?

People who sleep very warm should consider purchasing an innerspring or latex
mattress. Innerspring mattresses without foam comfort layers provide the best
temperature neutrality thanks to their superior airflow, while latex is
naturally temperature neutral and stays much cooler throughout the night than
   synthetic foams.

Latex hybrids can be even cooler, as pocketed coils provide airflow in the
same fashion as an innerspring. If you prefer the feel of synthetic foams —
such as memory foam — look for a foam hybrid with temperature regulation
features. These are warmer than an innerspring or latex mattress but still
offer better temperature regulation than a standard all-foam bed.

 * WHAT ARE THE BEST MATTRESSES IN A BOX?

There is no easy answer to this question since the “best” mattress is
exceptionally subjective — a bed that is perfect for one person may leave
another person sleepless and sore. Customers should always start by
determining their sleep needs, which include personal preferences but should
be based on their sleep position and body type. These details, combined with
their budget, will help them choose a mattress type, firmness option, and
preferred features. After narrowing the field, customers can then rely on
independent mattress reviews to determine what mattress in a box is best for
   them.

PRODUCT RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: OUR PROCESS

At Sleep Foundation, we personally test every product featured in our reviews
and guides. This hands-on approach allows us to provide accurate, data-driven
recommendations for mattresses, pillows, sheets, and other sleep essentials.

Guidelines for our testing methodology are as follows:

 1. Every member of our team brings years of industry experience and knowledge
to our hands-on evaluations. In addition to testing products, we’ve spoken
to sleep experts and toured manufacturing sites.
 2. Our testers fall into different categories based on body type, sleep
position, and personal preferences. This level of diversity helps to ensure
our product ratings are holistic and inclusive of all sleepers.
 3. Each type of sleep product is tested using a unique set of performance
criteria. We also assign ratings based on feedback from testers who fall
into specific categories based on weight and sleep position (i.e. side
sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds).
