LOOK: 50 IMAGES OF WINNING MOMENTS FROM SPORTS HISTORY

Sometimes images are the best way to honor the figures we've lost. When tragedy
swiftly reminds us that sports are far from the most consequential thing in
life, we can still look back on an athlete's winning moment that felt larger
than life, remaining grateful for their sacrifice on the court and bringing joy
to millions.

Read on to explore the full collection of 50 images Stacker compiled showcasing
various iconic winning moments in sports history. Covering achievements from a
multitude of sports, these images represent stunning personal achievements, team
championships, and athletic perseverance.

2012: BOXER CLARESSA SHIELDS WINS MIDDLEWEIGHT OLYMPIC GOLD

When 17-year-old American Claressa Shields defeated Russian Nadezhda Torlopova
in the middleweight final at the 2012 London Games, she became the youngest
gold-medalist boxer since John Fields in 1924. Before turning pro, Shields added
a second gold in 2016 in Rio, defending her title against the Netherlands'
Nouchka Fontijn.

2016: Kobe scores 60 in final NBA game

2016: KOBE SCORES 60 IN FINAL NBA GAME

Only Kobe could've authored this storybook ending to one of the best NBA careers
of all time. Despite a totally irrelevant regular-season game against Utah--in
which the second-worst Western Conference Lakers had already missed out on the
playoffs--Kobe dropped 60, including outscoring the Jazz 23-21 by himself in the
four quarter. The Laker legend, who grew up dreaming of donning the purple and
gold, then took center-court and addressed the fans in a final farewell and
thank you that ended in two words: "Mamba out."

2008: Danica Patrick becomes first female winner in IndyCar history

2008: DANICA PATRICK BECOMES FIRST FEMALE WINNER IN INDYCAR HISTORY

Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar racing when she took
home the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. Then 26, Patrick was just
three years removed from her Indy racing debut, and she held off two-time Indy
500 champ Helio Castroneves by over two seconds.

2019: LEWIS HAMILTON WINS FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

British Formula 1 racing star Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix for the
sixth time, a new record. He is mobbed and lifted by his native fans in this
iconic image following the victory. Hamilton totaled a record 413 single-season
points for the 2019 World Drivers' Championship, his sixth.

1984: Valerie Brisco-Hooks, Florence Griffith Joyner take gold, silver

1984: VALERIE BRISCO-HOOKS, FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER TAKE GOLD, SILVER

The United States played host to the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games, and in the
women's 200-meter final, compatriots Valerie Brisco-Hooks (left) and Florence
Griffith Joyner took home gold and silver. The former also won the 400 meters,
while Flo-Jo would win her first gold--and two more--at the 1998 Seoul Games.

1960: Abebe Bikila wins Olympics marathon barefoot, breaks world record

1960: ABEBE BIKILA WINS OLYMPICS MARATHON BAREFOOT, BREAKS WORLD RECORD

Ethiopian Abebe Bikila ran the 1960 Rome marathon barefoot, beat the runner-up
by 25 seconds, and set a new world record of 2:15:41.6. Wearing shoes in Tokyo
four years later, Bikila became the first to defend an Olympic marathon--this
time in 2:12:11.2, over four minutes better than the silver medalist.

2012: Tim Tebow wins AFC Wild Card Game on OT touchdown pass

2012: TIM TEBOW WINS AFC WILD CARD GAME ON OT TOUCHDOWN PASS

Tim Tebow, despite being a Heisman winner and first-round pick, had a very
short-lived pro career--though his defining moment was an iconic playoff
walk-off touchdown. Hosting the Steelers in the AFC Wild Card Game, the Broncos
blew a 20-6 halftime lead and went to overtime. The much-doubted signal-caller
hit Demaryius Thomas in stride on the opening play, and the wideout took it 80
yards to the house.

2018: TUA TAGOVAILOA WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR ALABAMA IN OT

Alabama head coach Nick Saban called on true freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
to start the second half in place of Jalen Hurts. The Crimson Tide trailed
Georgia 13-0 at the midway point, but Tua led them to a 20-7 final 30 minutes
into overtime. After a Bulldogs field goal, the lefty signal-caller had a chance
to tie or win; on the second play, Tua dropped back and threw a 41-yard walk-off
dime to DeVonta Smith.

2012: Dana Vollmer wins gold in 100m butterfly, sets new world record

Al Bello // Getty Images

2012: DANA VOLLMER WINS GOLD IN 100M BUTTERFLY, SETS NEW WORLD RECORD

American sprinter Dana Vollmer had already set an Olympic record in the
100-meter butterfly qualifier at the 2012 London Games. In the final, she won
gold and set a new world record; she added two more golds as a member of the
4x100-meter medley and 4x200-meter freestyle relays.

2018: Naomi Osaka beats Serena in U.S. Open final for first major

2018: NAOMI OSAKA BEATS SERENA IN U.S. OPEN FINAL FOR FIRST MAJOR

Reaching the tennis grand slam mountaintop is a career-defining feat all its
own; but taking down 23-time major champion Serena Williams in straight sets is
on another level. Then-20-year-old Naomi Osaka beat Serena 6-2, 6-4 in the 2018
season's last major, becoming the first Japanese player to win a grand slam
singles title.

2004: Lance Armstrong wins Tour de France

Doug Pensinger // Getty Images

2004: LANCE ARMSTRONG WINS TOUR DE FRANCE

Though the much-maligned Lance Armstrong would be stripped of this title and six
others in 2012 following the United States Anti-Doping Administration's
investigation, the image of the cancer survivor crossing the Stage 17 line
first--arms outstretched, Livestrong bracelet visible--remains an iconic image
of victory and overcoming insurmountable obstacles.

2019: TIGER WOODS WINS FIFTH MASTERS, ENDS 11-YEAR MAJOR DROUGHT

After 11 years without a major, Tiger Woods was still sitting on 14 total--four
shy of Jack Nicklaus' record 18. After endless setbacks and a string of failed
comebacks attempts, a return to winning majors seemed out of reach for more than
a decade. But 43-year-old Woods entered Augusta National in 2019 healthy and
motivated. On the same course where he won his first major in 1997, he came from
behind in the final round, winning his fifth green jacket by one stroke, and
pulling him within three majors of Nicklaus.

2017: James White scores game-winning touchdown in ‘28-3’ Super Bowl

2017: JAMES WHITE SCORES GAME-WINNING TOUCHDOWN IN €˜28-3€™ SUPER BOWL

No discussion of comebacks is complete without the Patriots' Super Bowl-record
25-point turnaround. Infamously trailing 28-3, Tom Brady and New England scored
25 unanswered, including a 19-0 fourth quarter, to force overtime. On the
opening drive, running back James White (pictured) took the toss from Brady on
the Falcons' 2-yard line, scampered right, and bullied his way in for the
walk-off.

2019: Damian Lillard sends Blazers into second round, waves goodbye to OKC

2019: DAMIAN LILLARD SENDS BLAZERS INTO SECOND ROUND, WAVES GOODBYE TO OKC

Damian Lillard is known for the long three and the frequent clutch bucket in
"Dame Time," but no moment was more iconic for the Portland guard than his
37-foot series-winning shot in the 2018-19 Western Conference first round. With
the game tied 115-115 and the series at 2-2 in a best-of-five format, Lillard
hit his 10th three-pointer--giving him 50 points--to send a trash-talking
Oklahoma City team packing.

2019: Liverpool completes shocking comeback in Champions League semifinal

2019: LIVERPOOL COMPLETES SHOCKING COMEBACK IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMIFINAL

In the two-leg aggregate Champions League Semifinal, Liverpool trailed Lionel
Messi's Barcelona 3-0 after the first match in Spain. The Premier League greats
needed at minimum a 3-0 home win to force extra time, but miraculously won
4-0--the winner coming from Divock Origi (pictured, right) with 11 minutes to
play. In one of the greatest comebacks in soccer history, Liverpool advanced to
the final and took down Tottenham.

2016: Army football ends 14-game losing streak vs. Navy

2016: ARMY FOOTBALL ENDS 14-GAME LOSING STREAK VS. NAVY

In the storied rivalry of service academies Army and Navy, the Black Knights had
suffered 14 consecutive defeats to the Midshipmen, last winning in 2001. Army
scored the go-ahead touchdown with six minutes remaining and ultimately ran out
the final four minutes of the clock before the cadets spilled onto the field of
Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.

2004: Derek Jeter makes diving catch vs. Red Sox, crashes into stands

2004: DEREK JETER MAKES DIVING CATCH VS. RED SOX, CRASHES INTO STANDS

Perhaps the play that best defines the Yankees career of newly inducted Hall of
Famer Derek Jeter, this fearless running catch and subsequent face-first dive
into the stands is nothing short of fabled. Although the 2004 game vs. Boston
was in July and the Yanks held a significant lead in the standings, the
shortstop's bloodied, battered face epitomized that no matchup with the Sox was
insignificant. The catch prevented two runs from scoring in a tie game in the
12th inning, and the Yankees won in the 13th.

2011: Mike Piazza hits emotional go-ahead home run for Mets post-9/11

MATT CAMPBELL // Getty Images

2011: MIKE PIAZZA HITS EMOTIONAL GO-AHEAD HOME RUN FOR METS POST-9/11

The Mets hosted their rival Braves for the first post-9/11 game in New York,
just 10 days after the attacks. With the city in desperate need of an emotional
boost and catharsis, Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza hit a go-ahead--and
eventual game-winning--two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth in one of the
most iconic New York sports moments in history.

2012: LEBRON WINS FIRST NBA TITLE

Two years following LeBron James' free-agent "Decision" to join the Miami Heat,
his Big Three--along with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh--defeated the Oklahoma City
Thunder in the 2012 NBA Finals. For the first time, the Kid from Akron lifted
the Bill Russell Finals MVP trophy (pictured) and his first Larry O'Brien
championship trophy.

2002: ADAM VINATIERI GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL FOR PATS€™ FIRST SUPER BOWL

Every dynasty needs its start somewhere, and Adam Vinatieri's game-winning kick
in 2002 ignited Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the Patriots' 21st-century
success. The Super Bowl win over the St. Louis Rams was not just the first for
the famous QB-coach tandem, but also the seminal title in team history.

2019: Blues win first Stanley Cup in team history

Bruce Bennett // Getty Images

2019: BLUES WIN FIRST STANLEY CUP IN TEAM HISTORY

Not only had the St. Louis Blues never won the Stanley Cup prior to June 2019,
but they were dead-last in the NHL standings in January. If those odds weren't
enough, they then went into Boston's TD Garden for a Game 7 against the six-time
Cup champs. Behind goals from MVP Ryan O'Reilly, Alex Pietrangelo, Brayden
Schenn, and Zach Sanford--plus near-impeccable goaltending from rookie Jordan
Binnington--St. Louis won 4-1 to lift the Cup.

2017: Astros win first World Series in franchise history

Christian Petersen // Getty Images

2017: ASTROS WIN FIRST WORLD SERIES IN FRANCHISE HISTORY

MVP George Springer, Jose Altuve, and Justin Verlander led the Houston Astros to
their first World Series title in seven-game fashion over the Dodgers. The
result had seemed unthinkable only four years prior, when the Astros had gone
51-111--the team's worst ever regular-season record. Though many feel Houston
should be stripped of the title in the fallout from their cheating scandal, the
championship remains in the record books.

1998: Michael Jordan wins sixth and final NBA title

JEFF HAYNES // Getty Images

1998: MICHAEL JORDAN WINS SIXTH AND FINAL NBA TITLE

For the third straight season, head coach Phil Jackson's Chicago Bulls reached
the pinnacle of the NBA with Michael Jordan named Finals MVP. It was the duo's
sixth title together and second three-peat (1991-93), and they'd both depart
following the conclusion: Jordan retired for the second time before joining the
Wizards three years later, and Jackson went on to win five more titles with Kobe
Bryant and the Lakers.

2010: Kobe celebrates Game 7 win, final title with Lakers fans

Christian Petersen // Getty Images

2010: KOBE CELEBRATES GAME 7 WIN, FINAL TITLE WITH LAKERS FANS

After the final championship of the late Kobe Bryant's career, it was only
fitting that its lasting image is L.A.'s favorite son celebrating with fans as
the confetti fell at Staples Center. The Lakers faced a 3-2 series deficit
before taking the remaining two home games to go back-to-back and seal MVP
Bryant's fifth ring. Making it sweeter was the redemptive nature given the
Lakers' defeat at the hands of the same Celtics two years prior.

2008: Celtics defeat rival Lakers for 17th title

2008: CELTICS DEFEAT RIVAL LAKERS FOR 17TH TITLE

Behind the newly formed Big Three of Paul Pierce (pictured), Kevin Garnett, and
Ray Allen, the Boston Celtics went from 24-58 in the previous season to NBA
champions--the franchise's record 17th NBA title and first since 1986. After
all, according to Garnett, "Anything is possible."

2016: LeBron delivers first NBA title to Cleveland

2016: LEBRON DELIVERS FIRST NBA TITLE TO CLEVELAND

LeBron James and his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers famously trailed the defending
champion Golden State Warriors 3-1 in a rematch of the previous year's Finals.
But the Cavs won the final four games, which featured LeBron's game-saving play
known as "The Block"--a chasedown stop of Andre Iguodala's layup in a tie game
under two minutes. It was the Cavs' first franchise title and first for the city
of Cleveland since 1964.

2000: AMERICAN WRESTLER RULON GARDNER€™S MASSIVE UPSET

Rulon Gardner faced off against undefeated Russian great Aleksandr Karelin in
the Sydney Olympics gold-medal match for the 130 kg class. Karelin had neither
conceded a point in six years nor been defeated in 13 years until the American
pulled off the international upset--one of the most notable in Olympic history.
In this image, he is carried through his hometown of Afton, Wyoming, upon his
return.

1968: COLETTE BESSON SHOCKS THE WORLD IN 400 METERS

French middle-distance runner Colette Besson literally and figuratively came out
of nowhere in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. She'd failed to qualify for Team
France in the 1966 European Championships, made the team for the Olympics, then
came from fifth place with 100 meters left to overtake the heavy favorite,
Britain's Lillian Board, for gold in the 400.

2010: Sidney Crosby scores game-winning OT goal for Team Canada

2010: SIDNEY CROSBY SCORES GAME-WINNING OT GOAL FOR TEAM CANADA

The Canadian men's hockey team faced substantial pressure at the 2010 Olympics
hosted in their nation's Vancouver. The gold-medal game against their neighbors
to the south was tied 2-2 after regulation. Who better to clinch the title than
Sid the Kid with an overtime game-winner in front of his country's faithful?

1992: DUKE AND COACH K GO BACK-TO-BACK IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

The Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team owned the early '90s, when, after
winning the program's first NCAA championship in 1991, took home the title the
following season. Led by Grant Hill (#33) and Christian Laettner, Duke earned
eventual Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski his second of five titles; he's now
only second to the mythical John Wooden, who won 10 with UCLA.

2018: U.S. WOMEN€™S HOCKEY STUNS CANADA IN GOLD MEDAL-WINNING SHOOTOUT

Canada women's ice hockey were four-time defending champs at the Pyeongchang
Games when they encountered the U.S. in the gold-medal game. On the 20-year
anniversary of their only other Olympic title, the Americans took the game to
overtime knotted at 2-2 and pulled off the shootout win.

1996: U.S. WOMEN€™S BASKETBALL WINS GOLD ON HOME SOIL

Hall of Famer and WNBA legend Lisa Leslie (pictured center) won her first of
four career Olympic gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta games. Team USA took down
Brazil in the final, 111-87, behind their star's 29 points, and they shot an
American single-game record 66.2% from the field. Leslie averaged 19.5 points
and 7.3 rebounds in the tournament.

1999: U.S. wins Ryder Cup by one point on miraculous putt

1999: U.S. WINS RYDER CUP BY ONE POINT ON MIRACULOUS PUTT

Contested just outside of Boston, the "Battle of Brookline" marked the 33rd
Ryder Cup between the U.S. and Europe. The Americans had trailed by four points
before the final day yet clawed back to find themselves one half-point short of
victory when the last match reached the 17th green all square. Justin Leonard
faced down a lengthy 45-foot birdie attempt, only to sink it in front of
opponent Jose Maria Olazabal, who then missed his 22-footer, clinching the U.S.
win.

1986: Diego Maradona scores ‘Goal of the Century’

1986: DIEGO MARADONA SCORES €˜GOAL OF THE CENTURY€™

In the quarterfinal of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico City, Argentina legend Diego
Maradona scored both goals in the 2-1 victory over England. Not only did his
controversial first earn a nickname--"Hand of God"--but this game-winner four
minutes later spurred the label, "Goal of the Century," after the diminutive
Maradona weaved through half the England defense and slotted home #2.

1980: Bjorn Borg outlasts John McEnroe for Wimbledon title

1980: BJORN BORG OUTLASTS JOHN MCENROE FOR WIMBLEDON TITLE

Swede tennis great Bjorn Borg defeated American John McEnroe in an emotionally
and physically draining five sets--which included an 18-16 McEnroe fourth-set
tiebreaker and a 9-7 final set--then considered the greatest match of all time.
Borg's fifth consecutive Wimbledon title would be his last at the All England
Club, and his battle with McEnroe would be rivalled only when Nadal and Federer
engaged in a similar one in 2008.

1996: Kerri Strug guts out vault despite injured ankle

1996: KERRI STRUG GUTS OUT VAULT DESPITE INJURED ANKLE

Eighteen-year-old gymnast Kerri Strug was a critical component of the U.S.
women's "Magnificent Seven" team at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Hoping to clinch the
team competition over Russia, Strug came up short on her first vault landing and
badly injured her ankle. Needing to land her second, Strug became an American
icon when she stuck it virtually on one leg for the win before collapsing. Her
coach famously carried her to the podium after.

1960: WILMA RUDOLPH FIRST AMERICAN TO WIN THREE GOLDS IN SINGLE OLYMPICS

At the 1960 Rome Olympics, African American sprinter Wilma Rudolph won gold in
the 100 meters (pictured), 200 meters, and 4x100-meter relay. She became the
first American woman to win three golds in a single Olympiad.

1980: ERIC HEIDEN WINS STUNNING FIVE INDIVIDUAL SPEED-SKATING GOLDS

The U.S. men's hockey team represented the "Miracle on Ice" at Lake Placid, but
long-track speed skater Eric Heiden was the undisputed king of the surface at
the same 1980 Games. He won gold in all five disciplines--500, 1,000, 1,500,
5,000, and 10,000 meters--and set Olympic records in four to go along with one
world record. No athlete had ever won five individual golds in a winter
Olympiad.

2015: USWNT TAKES OUT DEFENDING CHAMPS FOR THIRD WORLD CUP TITLE

At the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada, the United States did not concede a
single goal in the knockout stage en route to the final--and conceded just once
in the group stage. The title game was never in doubt despite Japan's two-goal
tally: Behind Carli Lloyd's (#10) hat-trick within 16 minutes and one from
Lauren Holiday (#12), the U.S. led 4-0 and then 4-1 at the half. After Japan's

As Michael Phelps owned the water in the 2008 Beijing Games, Jamaican sprinter
Usain Bolt was unbeatable on land. Not only did Bolt break his own record and
beat the runner-up by a full two one-hundredths of a second, but he noticeably
took his foot off the gas for the final 20 meters to celebrate his clear win. He
won the double after setting another world record in the 200.

Rafael Nadal had never won a grand slam outside of the French Open and faced
five-time defending champion Roger Federer. The lefty outlasted the Swiss
Maestro in a four-hour, 48-minute, five-set marathon--seven hours if you factor
in two rain delays--that ended just as the sun disappeared. The duel remains
inarguably one of the greatest tennis matches ever contested, and at that point
was the longest in Wimbledon history.

THE 40 BEST COVER SONGS BY ROCK BANDS

AC/DC

Martyn Goddard / Corbis, Getty Images

AC/DC

The Pick: “Baby Please Don’t Go”

Original Artist: Joe Williams’ Washboard Blues Singers

The Conversation: You have to go back to the beginning for this cover from
AC/DC. The oft-covered “Baby Please Don’t Go” helped the band gain some traction
in Australia with their High Voltage album, though this high energy cover was
left off the U.S. edition. That didn’t stop the band from playing it live with
Bon Scott infusing the blues song with all kinds of attitude and charisma. To
this day, it remains their most played cover by a wide margin.

Aerosmith

Kevin Mazur, Getty Images

AEROSMITH

The Pick: “Come Together”

Original Artist: The Beatles

The Conversation: This was a difficult choice as the oft-covered Tiny Bradshaw
song “Train Kept A-Rollin’” also would have been an amazing choice here, but
there’s just something about the more sinister sounding stamp that Aerosmith and
Steven Tyler put on the Beatles classic “Come Together” that just stands out.

Alter Bridge

ALTER BRIDGE

The Pick: “Travelling Riverside Blues”

Original Artist: Robert Johnson

The Conversation: Alter Bridge have trotted out a variety of covers live,
including AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie,” Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” and
Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” but no cover has been played more frequently by
the band than Johnson’s “Travelling Riverside Blues.” Kennedy usually takes
center stage, rocking some slide guitar and showing the bluesy sweet spot in his
voice.

Black Veil Brides

Cosa Nostra PR

BLACK VEIL BRIDES

The Pick: “Rebel Yell”

Original Artist: Billy Idol

The Conversation: Black Veil Brides have covered several songs in concert, but
only one has been issued as a single. The band’s take on Billy Idol’s “Rebel
Yell” was part of their Rebels EP back in 2011 and has been their most
frequently played cover. By the way, for those interested, the Rebels EP also
features a cover of KISS’ “Unholy” with Zakk Wylde guesting.

Blink-182

Mike Pont, WireImage/Getty Images

BLINK-182

The Pick: “Boys Don’t Cry”

Original Artist: The Cure

The Conversation: If you somehow missed The Cure influence on Blink-182’s “I
Miss You,” the band has furthered their love over the years introducing a number
of Cure songs into their sets. Though not huge on cover songs, Blink has
performed “Just Like Heaven” and “A Letter to Elise” in addition to our pick
here, their stellar take on “Boys Don’t Cry.”

Buckcherry

BUCKCHERRY

The Pick: “I Love It”

Original Artist: Icona Pop

The Conversation: The infectiousness of Icona Pop’s 2012 pop hit “I Love It” was
just too much for Buckcherry to deny. In fact, they decided to alter the lyrics
ever so slightly and put their own stamp on it, calling their version “Say Fuck
It.” It became the centerpiece of their 2014 Fuck EP, and their most performed
cover in the time since it was released.

Def Leppard

DEF LEPPARD

The Pick: “Rock On”

Original Artist: David Essex

The Conversation: This was really a three cover race between the band’s take on
Sweet’s “Action,” Badfinger’s “No Matter What” and Essex’s “Rock On,” the latter
two of which were released as singles on the band’s Yeah! covers album. But the
addition of string backing and hearing the more soulful take of Joe Elliott
showed more of the band’s stamp in veering a bit off the original arrangement.

Deftones

Warner Bros. / Photo by Frank Maddocks

DEFTONES

The Pick: “To Have and To Hold”

Original Artist: Depeche Mode

The Conversation: There were some interesting entries here. The band put their
stamp on a solid cover of The Cars’ “Drive,” gave The Smiths’ “Please Please
Please Let Me Get What I Want” a fresh take, delivered Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple
Man” in a way only they can and even showed their sensitive side covering Sade’s
“No Ordinary Love.” There’s even a stellar cover of The Cure’s “If Only Tonight
We Could Sleep.” But, their most performed — and arguably their best — cover
(and you can understand why) is Depeche Mode’s “To Have and To Hold.” They have
an affinity for Dave Gahan’s crew. They also covered “Never Let Me Down Again”
and “Somebody” at previous shows.

Disturbed

DISTURBED

The Pick: “The Sound of Silence”

Original Artist: Simon & Garfunkel

The Conversation: The power of David Draiman’s vocal, the rocked up arrangement
and the massive popularity of “The Sound of Silence” makes it hard to go with
anything else, but the group has some killer covers in their cupboard. Genesis’
“Land of Confusion” was a major hit for the band, and their takes on Tears for
Fears’ “Shout” and Pantera’s “Walk” have certainly won over fans as well.

Five Finger Death Punch

Better Noise Music / Photo by Stephen Jensen

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH

The Pick: “Bad Company”

Original Artist: Bad Company

The Conversation: This was not as much of a no-brainer as you might think. Yes,
the band’s “Bad Company” cover is great. It shows off Ivan Moody’s more soulful
side, and it’s their second most performed song ever over the years, but FFDP’s
cover of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “Blue on Black” is right on par with “Bad
Company.” It also gives Moody that blend of bluesy and power vocals. We could
see this becoming just as popular over time. Other FFDP covers in the
conversation include their takes on The Offspring’s “Gone Away” and LL Cool J’s
“Mama Said Knock You Out.”

Foo Fighters

FOO FIGHTERS

The Pick: “Darling Nikki”

Original Artist: Prince

The Conversation: The band have kept things fun and fresh in concert with a
variety of covers, but arguably their best known, and officially released, cover
is the group’s take on Prince’s “Darling Nikki.” Prince would later return the
favor, performing “Best of You” during the Super Bowl, and he invited Dave Grohl
down to the Forum in Los Angeles for a jam session one day a few years back. As
far as their live show, there’s something infinitely fun and funky with their
take on Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” and their Queen appreciation has often come
out with Grohl and Taylor Hawkins trading vocals on “Under Pressure.”

Godsmack

GODSMACK

The Pick: “Good Times Bad Times”

Original Artist: Led Zeppelin

The Conversation: This was a tougher call with Godsmack’s percussive take on
“Come Together” also very deserving of a nod, but the group’s take on the Led
Zeppelin classic “Good Times Bad Times” seems to give a broader showcase to the
group as a whole with some nifty guitar work included.

Green Day

GREEN DAY

The Pick: “Knowledge”

Original Artist: Operation Ivy

The Conversation: One Green Day cover towers over the rest. That would be
“Knowledge,” which is their most performed cover song and comes from early in
their career, when they chose to record the Operation Ivy track for their
1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours vinyl compilation. Keeping the party vibe, The
Isley Brothers’ “Shout” and Queen’s “We Are the Champions” have also kept their
performances fun.

Guns N' Roses

Katarina Benzova

GUNS N' ROSES

The Pick: “Live and Let Die”

Original Artist: Wings

The Conversation: This was no easy choice, but “Live and Let Die” gets the nod
here for its sheer epic presentation when it comes to the live show. While their
take on Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” is also quite beloved, “Live and
Let Die” is simply the more dynamic song.

Halestorm

Roy Rochlin, Getty Images

HALESTORM

The Pick: “Still of the Night”

Original Artist: Whitesnake

The Conversation: When you tend to do a covers EP between each record, it gives
you lots of options. While Halestorm’s cover of Judas Priest’s “Dissident
Aggressor” and Skid Row’s “Slave to the Grind” have gotten the most play on the
concert stage, there’s something no holds barred and purely primal in the band’s
cover of Whitesnake’s “Still of the Night” that just puts it over the top for
us.

Hellyeah

HELLYEAH

The Pick: “I Don’t Care Anymore”

Original Artist: Phil Collins

The Conversation: “No more, no more!” Yes, please, some more, some more.
Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul had actually recorded a version of Phil Collins’ “I
Don’t Care Anymore” in his previous band Damageplan and used some of Dimebag
Darrell’s track when it was finally considered to cover for Hellyeah.

In This Moment

Atom Splitter PR

IN THIS MOMENT

The Pick: “Into Dust”

Original Artist: Mazzy Star

The Conversation: Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” has been the band’s most
performed cover song, but while a strong pick, we’re going with Maria Brink’s
amazing performance on the Mother cover of Mazzy Star’s “Into Dust” here. It’s
haunting, moody and vulnerable showcasing a different side to the singer. There
also was consideration given to another Mother cover, “We Will Rock You,” which
finds Brink singing the anthemic Queen classic with Lzzy Hale and Taylor Momsen.

KISS

George De Sota, Getty Images

KISS

The Pick: “New York Groove”

Original Artist: Hello

The Conversation: When KISS’ members simultaneously decided to release solo
albums in 1978, it was Frehley’s cover of the Hello track “New York Groove” that
seemed to garner the most attention. The group would go on to play it nearly 300
times in concert in the years since, showing that solo or not, the guys know a
great live song.

Korn

KORN

The Pick: “Another Brick in the Wall”

Original Artist: Pink Floyd

The Conversation: Think Pink, when it comes to Korn and covers. In addition to
performing all three acts of “Another Brick in the Wall,” the group has also
trotted out “Goodbye Cruel World” and “Breathe” over the years. The funkier
Cameo cover “Word Up” also enjoyed some radio love, but it’s all about this Pink
Floyd classic for Korn where covers are concerned.

Limp Bizkit

George de Sota, Hulton Archives/Getty Images

LIMP BIZKIT

The Pick: “Faith”

Original Artist: George Michael

The Conversation: It’s hard to go against the George Michael cover that really
launched Limp Bizkit’s career. Fred Durst took the infinitely catchy ‘80s pop
hit and turned it into an all-out in your face assault that late ‘90s rock fans
couldn’t get enough of. While “Faith” was huge for the band, the attempt at
something deeper and more introspective taking on The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes”
didn’t fare nearly as well.

Linkin Park

LINKIN PARK

The Pick: “Wish”

Original Artist: Nine Inch Nails

The Conversation: You could technically choose “It’s Goin’ Down,” which is the
band’s most performed cover from Mike Shinoda’s other project, The X-ecutioners,
but our choice here is a track that just feels tailor made for Linkin Park
though it initially came from Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor’s initial high
energy angst and aggression is right in Chester Bennington’s wheelhouse, and a
guitar sound that fits closely to what Linkin Park often provides makes “Wish” a
natural fit for a cover. It was well received by fans when played live.

Marilyn Manson

Kevin RC Wilson, Getty Images

MARILYN MANSON

The Pick: “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”

Original Artist: Eurythmics

The Conversation: It’s hard to go against the song that started it all for
Manson, but “Sweet Dreams” is just one of several killer covers Manson has in
his repertoire. If it’s possible, he made the dark, synth-driven ‘80s pop hit
even more sinister. We’re also quite fond of his take on the Gerard McMann Lost
Boys soundtrack favorite “Cry Little Sister,” and he did a stellar job covering
‘80s hits “Personal Jesus” and “Tainted Love,” as well.

Motley Crue

Kevin Winter, Getty Images

MOTLEY CRUE

The Pick: “Smokin’ in the Boys Room”

Original Artist: Brownsville Station

The Conversation: This was a fairly easy one, as “Smokin’ in the Boys Room”
remains one of the Crue’s biggest hits. The band did adapt it to their own
style, and took the liberties of including their names in the lyrics as well.
This far overshadows their other cover of note, when they took on the Sex
Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.”

My Chemical Romance

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE

The Pick: “Desolation Row”

Original Artist: Bob Dylan

The Conversation: It’s a long way from the solemn, strummy, songwriter delivery
of Bob Dylan, but My Chemical Romance doubled energy, through some punk sneer
and guitars behind it and still made sure that “Desolation Row” managed to keep
Dylan’s attitude and sentiment intact. They definitely put their own stamp on it
with this version. The track also got an extra boost, targeted for the Watchmen
movie.

Nickelback

NICKELBACK

The Pick: “Sad But True”

Original Artist: Metallica

The Conversation: The band’s take on Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright for
Fighting” is probably their most popular recorded cover, but have you caught
them taking on Metallica’s “Sad But True” live? It’s a pretty faithful cover
that lifts the energy in the crowd when they’ve pulled it out, and Chad Kroeger
actually gets pretty close to James Hetfield’s vocals.

Nirvana

Jeff Kravitz, Getty Images

NIRVANA

The Pick: “The Man Who Sold the World”

Original Artist: David Bowie

The Conversation: Shocking Blue’s “Love Buzz” was Nirvana’s most performed
cover, but it’s hard to think of the band without revisiting the iconic MTV
Unplugged in New York set where the group stripped back David Bowie’s “The Man
Who Sold the World” for one of the night’s most memorable inclusions. Their
takes on Meat Puppets’ “Lake of Fire,” The Vaselines’ “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for
a Sunbeam” and Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” were also under
consideration.

Papa Roach

Eleven Seven Music

PAPA ROACH

The Pick: “Firestarter”

Original Artist: The Prodigy

The Conversation: Papa Roach aren’t huge on covers, though they have rocked
Blur’s “Song 2” at over 100 shows. However, it was truly a special moment when
Papa Roach were able to honor the late Keith Flint of The Prodigy at Sonic
Temple in 2019 with their cover of “Firestarter.” Jacoby Shaddix’s high energy
delivery perfectly reflected the frenetic electronic rock song and gave Sonic
Temple fans — who had expected to see The Prodigy return to the U.S. — a
standout memory from the festival. It went over so well, Papa Roach even
continued covering the song beyond that special moment.

Pearl Jam

PEARL JAM

The Pick: “Rockin’ in the Free World”

Original Artist: Neil Young

The Conversation: Though Pearl Jam have covered many songs, none seems to fit
the band onstage as well as Neil Young’s defiant anthem. The band has enjoyed a
close friendship with Young over the years, which makes the nod all the sweeter.
No disrespect to The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” Wayne Cochrane’s “Last Kiss,” their
outstanding take on Victoria Williams’ “Crazy Mary” or the Dead Boys’ “Sonic
Reducer,” but this Young cover always leaves a lasting memory.

Rage Against the Machine

Ethan Miller, Getty Images

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

The Pick: “The Ghost of Tom Joad”

Original Artist: Bruce Springsteen

The Conversation: Rage Against the Machine’s Springsteen cover is so good that
Tom Morello was able to put his stamp on the track when touring with Springsteen
himself. It’s a powerful song made all the more impressive once Morello’s guitar
histrionics take center stage. Yes, Rage Against the Machine released a covers
album and “Renegades of Funk” was a radio hit, but “The Ghost of Tom Joad” truly
captures audiences live.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

MTV, Getty Images

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

The Pick: “Higher Ground”

Original Artist: Stevie Wonder

The Conversation: As much as we would love to shout out the band’s incredibly
infectious take on Ohio Players’ “Love Rollercoaster” here, you’ve got to give
respect to their performance on Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground.” Already funky,
Flea took the bass lines to an even higher energy level and the band received
some of their first major attention with the in-your-face cover.

Seether

Concord Music

SEETHER

The Pick: “Heart Shaped Box”

Original Artist: Nirvana

The Conversation: Seether got plenty of radio love for their kitschy cover of
Wham’s ‘80s pop hit “Careless Whisper,” but it’s hard to ignore how close the
band sounds when they cover Nirvana. Shaun Morgan has that Cobain vocal range
and delivery down, which is why “Heart-Shaped Box” has likely been their most
performed cover. They’ve fully explored the Nirvana love over the years,
covering “You Know You’re Right,” “Rape Me,” “Lithium,” “Polly,” “Drain You,”
‘Something in the Way,” “Breed” and “In Bloom” as well.

Shinedown

SHINEDOWN

The Pick: “Simple Man”

Original Artist: Lynyrd Skynyrd

The Conversation: There really is no other cover that could lay claim to the
title of Shinedown’s best cover. The band initially added “Simple Man” as a
bonus cut to their debut album Leave a Whisper, and it’s remained a fan favorite
ever since. In 2018, Brent Smith revealed that Shinedown had once decided to
take the song out of their sets until Godsmack’s Sully Erna called him out on it
for not playing the audience beloved track. “He was making the point about it’s
not about the painter, it’s about the painting, and that stuck with me for a
long time,” said Smith. “The following night we put the song back in the set.”

Smashing Pumpkins

SMASHING PUMPKINS

The Pick: “Landslide”

Original Artist: Fleetwood Mac

The Conversation: “Space Oddity” by David Bowie is the band’s most performed
cover, and while they give it a solid go with atmospheric grace, the pick here
has to be the band’s take on Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” Staying faithful to
the original, Billy Corgan’s restrained vocal approach leaves him arguably as
vulnerable in the vocal as he’s ever sounded. It’s a beautifully performed cover
that was the standout piece from their Pisces Iscariot collection.

Staind

Robert Mora, Getty Images

STAIND

The Pick: “Sober”

Original Artist: Tool

The Conversation: Staind haven’t really gone too heavy on any one cover, but
arguably their most well known cover performance is that of Tool’s “Sober.”
Stripping it back to a more acoustic arrangement, it’s no less powerful as
frontman Aaron Lewis is able to step into the angst-ridden range of Maynard
James Keenan quite well. Keeping in that same dark acoustic angst-ridden veil,
Staind have also dropped Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page” and Alice in Chains’
“Nutshell” into sets.

Stone Sour

Eric Haggard, Loudwire

STONE SOUR

The Pick: “Gimme Shelter”

Original Artist: The Rolling Stones

The Conversation: Stone Sour are another act who have delved fully into the
covers idea, providing plenty of options. If you’re going to cover The Rolling
Stones’ classic “Gimme Shelter,” you better damn well have a powerhouse vocalist
to deliver Merry Clayton’s killer backing vocals. Stone Sour managed to provide
us with the pairing we long lived to hear with Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale joining
Corey Taylor on the vocals for a truly badass performance. There are other
awesome Stone Sour covers with Alice in Chains’ ‘Nutshell,” Black Sabbath’s
“Children of the Grave” and Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” coming to mind, but none
raise the energy of the room like “Gimme Shelter.”

Stone Temple Pilots

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

The Pick: “Dancing Days”

Original Artist: Led Zeppelin

The Conversation: There’s really one STP cover that stands above all others and
that’s the band’s take on Led Zeppelin’s “Dancing Days.” Though it was initially
recorded for the Encomium: Tribute to Led Zeppelin, it really started to take
off when the stripped back version surfaced in their MTV Unplugged special,
climbing to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and No. 11 on the Modern
Rock chart. It was also later added as a bonus track to the expanded edition of
the Purple record. The band has never really put too much emphasis on any other
individual cover, though there’s something that gets us every time hearing Scott
Weiland’s sorrowful vocals on “Christmas Time Is Here” from the Vince Guaraldi
Trio for the Peanuts Christmas special.

Three Days Grace

RCA

THREE DAYS GRACE

The Pick: “I Don’t Care”

Original Artist: Apocalyptica

The Conversation: This one is a bit of a cheat as the typically instrumental
Apocalyptica pulled in Three Days Grace’s Adam Gontier to sing on one of their
biggest hits. It feels like it could have just as easily been a Three Days Grace
song though it appeared on Apocalyptica’s record. The group has often pulled out
the aggression-filled “Break Stuff” from Limp Bizkit live, while also filling
the breaks between their last two albums with covers of alt-rock hits “You Don’t
Get Me High Anymore” (from Phantogram) and “Somebody That I Used to Know” (from
Gotye),” which deserved to be in the discussion.

Van Halen

Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

VAN HALEN

The Pick: “You Really Got Me”

Original Artist: The Kinks

The Conversation: Van Halen does have some great covers, but it’s hard to argue
against the importance of their take on The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.” For
many, it was the song that introduced them to Van Halen as the lead single from
their debut album. The Kinks’ original was played with vibrant energy, and felt
like a boundary pushing record for its day. Van Halen kept that spirit but
incorporated some “take notice” riffs from Eddie Van Halen, making it a fresh
sounding cover that also sparked some boundary pushing of its own. In the years
to come, Van Halen would also see success with Roy Orbison’s “(Oh) Pretty Woman”
and gain fans for their takes on John Brim’s “Ice Cream Man” and Roy Rogers and
Dale Evans’ “Happy Trails,” but “You Really Got Me” really got all of us hooked
on Van Halen.

Volbeat

Q Prime / Photo by Ross Halfin

VOLBEAT

The Pick: “I Only Want to Be With You”

Original Artist: Dusty Springfield

The Conversation: Volbeat have always loved defying expectations, so it should
be no surprise that their most played cover is of the infinitely catchy Dusty
Springfield 1963 breakout pop single “I Only Want to Be With You.” Though the
song has been covered many times over the years by multiple artists, nobody
really delivers it with the chugging guitar aggression and occasional double
kick drum ferocity that Volbeat does. Credit should also be given for turning
the sorrowful Hank Williams classic “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” into an
anthemic rock track.

Rob Zombie

Kevin RC Wilson, Loudwire

ROB ZOMBIE

The Pick: “We’re an American Band”

Original Artist: Grand Funk Railroad

The Conversation: If you take away the picks from Rob Zombie’s previous band
White Zombie, his most performed cover is the Grand Funk Railroad classic “We’re
an American Band.” Zombie’s spirited take was also recorded for an album,
released as a single and stands as a favorite in the live set as well. Other
fitting covers of a note include nods to the original shock rocker Alice Cooper
(“School’s Out”), punk icons The Ramones (“Blitzkrieg Bop”) and The Beatles
(“Helter Skelter”).
