May 30, 2022 I am a massive gadget head. Whenever I go shopping I always come home with some new gizmo. It could be the most pointless device in the world and I would still get it. I just love the way technology has changed our lives for the better. There are a lot of debates going on in the world right now surrounding technology and its impact on us as a society. And I would be the first to agree that not everything technology has given us is necessarily a great thing. Social media, for example, has been proven to cause a whole host of mental health issues. Prolonged exposure to LED screens is bad for our eyes. But I’d argue there are more ways that technology has helped us than hindered us. Today I want to look at the world of navigation and how technology has made us better at navigating our world in general. But not just our world either, also the worlds we couldn’t ever access before! PRE-TECHNOLOGICAL NAVIGATION Humans are incredible creatures. Long before we had technology we still managed to navigate the world. Our lust for exploration was too strong. Early explorers would make note of natural sites of interest to help navigate. Big trees, odd rock formations, things like that. They would draw them on pieces of parchment and these became the first-ever maps. Sailors were faced with a different issue. There are very few distinguishing features at sea. So they turned upwards, towards the stars. The stars are very consistent in their positions. Of course the position of the Earth in relation to them needs to be taken into account. But generally speaking, sailors managed to use them as a way to navigate the oceans. Then we created the first major bit of navigation technology. The compass. The foundation of every single geographical positioning tool for centuries to follow. Using the magnetic pull of the north pole, a compass can be used to figure out which direction you are going. This changed everything. Suddenly sailors could ensure they were always on the right path. This was massive for industry and trade. NAVIGATIONAL INNOVATION Modern navigational technology is far greater than what the sailors of old had to fare with. We have been blessed with a lot of technology that aids in everyday navigation. The biggest and best of these was, of course, GPS. The Global Positioning System that has become synonymous with global travel. Modern technology has gone a step further and we can now track live traffic updates and have our routes adjust themselves automatically to find the most efficient route at any given time. But it isn’t just above ground navigation that has been improved. Sonar has changed the way we explore the depths of the ocean. Much of the world below us remains unexplored. But with modern technology we are slowly mapping out all the caverns and trenches that rest below the sea. FANTASY NAVIGATION As I said at the start, modern technology hasn’t just improved our navigation of the real world. Humans have a fantastic talent for telling stories and creating worlds in our mind. The lands of Middle Earth and the castles of Hogwarts. These worlds existed on the silver screen and in the pages of books. And people drew out maps of them. But modern technology has taken this a step further. Games like Minecraft have given people the ability to create these fantasy worlds in 3d and move through them with their avatar. People have spent months working on painstakingly recreating fantasy worlds and sharing them with the world, this server list has a huge catalogue of maps that allow you to step into your favorite fantasy worlds. VIRTUAL REALITY There is one piece of new technology that allows us to improve our navigation of both the fantasy worlds and the real world. Virtual reality. VR technology is already being used by astronomers to try to map out planets like Mars and to explore the areas of the Moon we have yet to visit.
