Skip to content * English * Français (French) GET HELP NOW YOUR WORKPLACE CARES Identify the signs and support a colleague who may be suffering from Intimate Partner Violence BEING THERE TO CARE, SAFETYNET NIPISSING PROVIDES AWARENESS, EDUCATION AND SUPPORT IN WORKPLACES FOR COLLEAGUES EXPERIENCING INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE (IPV). WHAT IS INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE? You may know it as ‘domestic violence’. In a broad sense, it is harm caused by an intimate partner, which takes many forms but is often the result of an attempt to gain or assert power and control over a partner. Victims and offenders can be of any gender but 79% of IPV victims are women with higher rates for Indigenous peoples, the disabled, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The disabled may face additional barriers leaving due to an increased likelihood of financial or physical dependence on an intimate partner. FIND OUT MORE AN EMPLOYER’S DUTY: WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER Employers who are aware or who ought reasonably to be aware of intimate partner violence, that would likely expose a worker to physical injury that may occur in the workplace, must take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances to protect a worker. FIND OUT MORE TAKE ACTION STRATEGIES Co-workers who are engaging and approachable with their colleagues are most likely to have information regarding intimate partner violence disclosed with them.
