CARER SUPPORT

GETTING HELP THROUGH CARER GATEWAY

Carer Gateway aims to make your life easier.

By calling Carer Gateway, you will be connected with a new Australia-wide
network of Carer Gateway service providers. They will talk through what you need
and help you to find local services and support to help you.

CARER WELLBEING SURVEY

Carers Australia and the University of Canberra are undertaking a national
online survey of carers’ wellbeing and use of support services again in 2023, on
behalf of the Department of Social Services.

Taking part will help us better understand how many people are providing
different forms of care across Australia, and better understand the wellbeing
and needs of carers.

CARER GATEWAY CAMPAIGN

The Carer Gateway national advertising campaign aims to increase awareness of
Carer Gateway services and supports, and encourage unpaid carers to access
support through the phone line and website. Carer Gateway is a free support
program for Australia’s 2.65 million unpaid carers, many of whom do not know
that dedicated support is available to help them in their caring role.

AM I A CARER?

Video duration 2:04
Watch with transcript

Anyone can be a carer.

Many people don’t see themselves as carers. They are just children, parents,
partners or friends who care for someone close to them.

If you are a carer, you can get help and support from the government and other
organisations.

PLANNING FOR EMERGENCIES

Emergencies can happen anytime. If you are a carer, planning for emergencies
will help you to cope even when things go wrong.

WHAT IS RESPITE

‘Respite’ or ‘respite care’ is when someone else takes care of the person you
care for, so that you can have a break. A break can give you time to do everyday
activities, deal with stress and look after yourself. When you are a carer, it’s
important to regularly take time for yourself to rest and recharge.

AT HOME

As a carer, you help the person you care for with many activities in and around
the home. Understanding what you need to do and what help you can get can make
your life easier.
