Alan was a totally unique individual, one of those rare personalities who, with extraordinary intellectual and scientific acumen, was able to excel in science, creativity, insight, leadership, education, patient care and editorial skills, while maintaining the values and importance of family and tight bonds of friendship with many. He will be greatly missed. Alan was born on March 16, 1961 in Warren, Ohio and raised in Mississippi where he attended high school, excelling in sports and graduating number one in his class. He went on to the University of Mississippi, graduating in 1983 with a BA in chemistry, again first in his class, Summa Cum Laude. He excelled as well as an offensive lineman, achieving academic All-Southeastern Conference and All American honors, receiving the National Football Foundation University of Mississippi Chapter Scholar -Athlete Award. He went on to Johns Hopkins, graduating in 1989 with an MD and a PhD in Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences; his thesis adviser was Donald Coffey. He stayed at Hopkins for his Surgery and Urology training, finishing in 1994 when he was appointed to the faculty as an instructor in Urology. He was rapidly promoted to Associate Professor (1995) and then to full Professor of Urology and Urologic Oncology in 1999. He achieved professorial rank in Oncology and in Pathology as well (in 1999 and 2000, respectively). On November 15, 2004, he became the Professor and Director and Urologist in Chief of the Brady Urological Institute, succeeding Patrick Walsh. He proudly held this post until he stepped down in 2022, having led the institution through a period of strategic growth while continuing to develop and mentor another generation of surgeon- scientists. Alan...s career was marked with significant accomplishments, one of the earliest of which was the publication in 1993 (remember, he finished his training in 1994) of the first of the articles on what were to become known as the ..úPartin Tables..Ñ. His work before and after included a wide range of articles on the predictive variables for the behavior of prostate cancer, as well as investigations into prostatic enlargement and growth. Alan...s continuing and progressive scholarship and the respect that he accrued among his colleagues earned him numerous awards, among which were the AUA Gold Cystoscope (2002), election to the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons(AAGUS) and the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons(CSGUS) (2002 and 2005, respectively), and the prestigious Saint Paul's medal from the British Association of Urologic Surgeons (2018). He accepted 22 invitations as visiting professor, authored or coauthored over 700 publications (h -index 151), and served on numerous editorial boards. He served as the Editor in Chief of this Journal from 1997-2007. At the time his illness was diagnosed he was continuing as the Editor in Chief of the field...s gold standard textbook, Campbell -Walsh -Wein Urology. Alan was described by Mohamad Allaf, in the bulletin written for the AAGUS membership, as ..ú..¬ first and foremost, a family man..Ñ, and indeed he was. His beloved wife, Vicky, complemented him perfectly. The two of them were always a pleasure to be with. They would characteristically try and extend meeting time for those extra special days together. Vicky assumed the role of expert nurse and constant companion during Alan's illness, even getting him to two Baltimore Ravens... games. Our thoughts are with her and their children, grandchildren, and his brother, Mark. Alan Partin was a gifted and model surgeon scientist and leader, a great friend, a significant contributor in innumerable ways and a devoted family man. He made a difference and will be greatly missed.
