Here is a book that, in easy and refreshing fashion, does several things,
including: reviewing history; focusing on what a “religion” - Christianity in
this case - has done to and for the world; and emphasizing that numbers of
current opinions and tends will take us back to the Dark Ages. This is an
insightful and thoughtful approach … and it’s not just for Christians.

How Christianity Changed the World by Alvin J. Schmidt, a former professor of
sociology, is truly a must read. Schmidt, in this massive book, helps the reader
understand the incredible impact Christianity had on the world. Are you thankful
for hospitals, universities, religious freedoms, social freedoms, economic
freedoms, etc.? Well, Schmidt argues successfully that most of what we see
positive in the Western world is a result of the Christianization of the world.
For example, did you know why ancient Rome outlawed slavery (a large percentage
of Romans were slaves, this was also true for ancient Athens)? Also, why is it
that countries where Christianity flourished outlawed slavery and other nations
where Christianity didn’t take root (primarily Islamic nations)—even into the
21st century—still practice slavery? The answer is quite simple: Christianity.
Critics may argue Schmidt is preaching to the choir, but I beg to differ. I
would argue the majority of Christians have limited knowledge of early
Christianity. Many modern Christians hardly know the Bible, much less Christian
history. Thus, I believe this book is vital for both the Christian and even
people who are not religious or of other faiths. Also, people across the globe
need to hear the real historical truth about the most popular faith in the
world.
The 21st century is running amock with biased and flat out lies about Christians
and Christianity. We hear it daily in the media, universities, workplace, etc.
Lies such as, Christians were and are anti-education, anti-love,
anti-innovation, anti-diversity, and so on and so forth. However, this couldn’t
be further from the truth. Many of the world’s most brilliant scientists were
Christians. In addition, the idea of compassion was popularized by many early
Christians. The ancient world viewed compassion, for the most part, as a
weakness. People weren’t encouraged to help the poor and downtrodden. However,
when Christianity began to grow across the world, hospitals began to be built,
orphanages, homeless shelters, schools for the deaf and mute, etc. Overall, I
found this book to be worth the read, and I highly recommend this book for
Christians and for anyone who truly wants to know how Christianity transformed
the world in positive ways.
Also, I highly recommend "The Book that Made Your World: How the Bible Created
the Soul of Western Civilization" by Vishal Mangalwadi

I once was taken in by the pervasive thoughts in anti-theist circles that all
human progress was a result of secular ideas. This book thoroughly changed that.
Well-cited and documented, this book comprehensively explains how the world that
we (and virtually all atheists) take for granted is a direct product of the
Christian worldview. I was pleased to find that many, perhaps even half or more,
of the sources cited, are not written for Christian purposes, thus lending
additional credibility in the face of opposition. If you like being able to stop
an anti-theist's argument in its tracks, this book is for you.
My only complaint is the author's tendency to get on a soapbox concerning
political and certain subjective matters. He hates socialism. There is no doubt
about that. I don't like mixing God and politics in any way, but Schmidt is
insistent upon it and spends an overly long time going down a tangent on the
evils of socialism more than once. Especially in the later chapters, he also has
a tendency to rant about subjective matters, like the beauty of art and music.
Both issues cheapen the book's arguments and bring the author's objectivity into
question. It's enough to cost the book a star, in my opinion. Great read, aside
from that!

If the Book of Acts were updated to reflect the last 1900 years it would read a
lot like the book: "How Christianity Changed the World".
If you find that many around you (or even yourself) are ignorant of the rich
blessings that our Christian heritage has given us (recognition of human rights,
abolition of slavery, motivation for charity, the scientific method, art and
music, medicine, etc) then you need to read this book.
Read it for yourself, or read it so that you can correct those who in ignorance
disparage Christianity and the God who gave it to us.
I am so impressed with it that I have offered on social media to buy it for any
of my friends who want to read it yet cannot afford it. I've read many good
books, but I have never made that offer before.
I think it would be an excellent gift for teenagers and college students who are
surrounded by a culture that denies the huge positive impact that Christianity
has had on our society. It is heavily footnoted and written in a scholarly,
balanced and yet very readable manner.
The only fault I would offer is that 400 pages cannot do full justice to the
topic. Some chapters are not as detailed as others. Nevertheless it is an
extremely valuable resource. I would like to see it updated and expanded.

Heard about this book on a TV programme and as I enjoy history thought it would
be an interesting read. I found it very easy to read and it definately gives you
a picture of what society was like in New Testament times. It also highlights
the positive infuences of Christianity on our world especially how Christianity
changed attitudes towards children and the role of women. I have been reading
this in chunks and although not quite finished as yet I would recommend this
book to anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the world of the early
Christians.

How Christianity changed the world? How much? Nobody knows. But this book gives
many examples that it did change the world` s course in many positive ways.
Even knowledgeable believers will be amazed at how many of our present
institutions and values reflect a Christian origin. Not only countless
individual lives but civilization itself was transformed by Jesus Christ and his
followers. Christians committed a lot of crimes. But when they did, they did it
not in accordance with the Christian faith, rather they were in that case
unfaithful.
This book`s task is not to work out in how far true Christian faith or wrong
conceptions about how the faith has to be practised influenced the world. It
wants to say that the Christian faith alone produces good fruits, which after
reading the book is hardly deniable. In the ancient world, Christ` s teachings
elevated brutish standards or morality, halted infanticide, enhanced human life,
emancipated women, abolished slavery, inspired charities and relief
organizations, created hospitals, established orphanages, and founded schools.
All this fits the theory that a valuable philosophy has always to prove truth
carrying capacity in practise.
Christianity even kept classical culture alive through recopying manuscripts,
building libraries, moderating warfare through truce days and providing dispute
arbitration. It were Christians who invented colleges and universities,
dignified labour as a divine vocation, and extended the light of civilization to
barbarians on the frontiers. In the modern era, Christian teaching, properly
expressed, advanced science, instilled concepts of political and social and
economic freedom. Fostered justice, and provided the greatest single source of
inspiration for the achievements in art, architecture, music, and literature
that we treasure. That Faith seems to be the most powerful agent in transforming
society for the better across 2 thousand years since Jesus lived on Earth. No
other religion, philosophy, teaching, nation, movement - whatever- has so
changed the world for the better as Christianity has done.
Many today who disparage Christianity may not know or believe that, were it not
for Christianity, they would not have the freedom that they presently enjoy. The
very freedom of speech and expression that ironically permits them to castigate
Christian values is largely a by-product of Christianities influences that have
been incorborated into the social fabric of the Western world.
This freedom ironically permits the possessors of freedom to dishonour the very
source of their freedom, as Fernand Braudel stated: "Throughout the history of
the West, Christianity has been at the heart of the civilization it inspires,
even when it has allowed itself to be captured or deformed by it." When I
mentioned this in respect of the freedom of press in a reader`s letter the
editor expurgated it.
The book contains 15 chapters in which all this is elucidated. The Christian
faith transformed many people to the better, changed the moral values of the
antique society to the good, as well as the status of the women who had no
rights in ancient times. It brought the development and maintenance of Christian
Charity and Compassion, it gave origin and development to hospitals, it set
milestones in education, it improved the perspectives of labour and economics,
it advocated and enriched scientific research, it brought up the ideas of
liberty and justice to secure it with laws and in constitutions, it influenced
strongly art and architecture and highlighted music and literature and much
more. Where would we be in the world without Christianity? Maybe nowhere!
