HI, I'M JENN!

Going boldly into a new frontier...

Welcome to my Blog on my newest adventure, a career in Cyber Security! After
decades spent in a variety of industries from local government to cowboy boots -
I am placing a new hat on my head. I am starting this blog to record my journey
in everything cybersecurity. Let's aim for the moon and just maybe we will land
in the stars!

CYBERSECURITY, WOMENS EDITION

"IT'S A MANS WORLD"

When I first learned about Cybersecurity, it was from my husband. He had been
nominated to the first cyber security unit in the US Army at Fort Gordon. It was
the dawn of a new specialty in security analytics. Over the last 8 years I have
met many types of folks in this field but not surprisingly, only a handful of
women. A report from the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings
Institution measured men's and women's digital scores, and found that women had
stronger skills than men do. The Brookings report, called "Digitalization and
the American Workforce," looked at "information about the knowledge, skills,
tools and technology; education and training; work context; and work activities
required" for high tech jobs, and it gave women a digital score of 48 versus 45
for men. Ladies take note! As our Queen Bey says "Girls, we run this world."
Imagine the budding youth of the newest generation of women taking the tech
world by storm. I cannot wait to see that future!

WORKING MOTHERS

A PRECARIOUS BALANCING ACT...

Since the day my daughter was born I was devoted to her. All 9 pound 7.6 ounces!
It was difficult though as I was working full time processing tickets at my tiny
Sheriff's office in the lowcountry of Georgia. I never knew then just how hard
my working journey would become! It is often looked at from the other side, stay
at home parenting, that the grass is greener and vice versa. Well thankfully a
few years back I was give respite from my husband to take time off for a
extended period. That is when the truth hit me, mothering is hard in general.
What isn't spoken of is that the majority of domestic duties reside on the
mothers "to-do's". The value of self care is unspoken and ignored. I am lucky in
the fact I have a partner who shares equal domestic duties but for the future of
women, this needs to be made a priority. It needs to be taught to all children,
not just girls. Lets rebrand this as a "working parent life." I am all for it!
The newest version of the "working parent" for me right now is taking a 6 month
Cyber Security class with Rice University. This class is evenings and requires
about 20 additional hours of study a week. I will certainly report back when I
make it to the otherside! Cybersecurity as a career right now is blooming but
what it will be like for a mom, that, I am keen to find out!
