(David Swanson/AFP/Getty Images) By Andrew Jeong November 14, 2024 at 1:15 a.m. EST The last supermoon of the year — which is also a beaver moon — will hit peak illumination Friday around 4:29 p.m. Eastern time. A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest point to Earth during its 27-day orbit — known as perigee — usually at about 226,000 miles from the planet. The exact distance of perigee varies because the lunar orbit isn’t a perfect circle, but the term supermoon is used when a full moon comes within at least 90 percent of perigee, NASA says.
