AVANOS MEDICAL ANNOUNCES RECALLS OF THE CORTRAK*2 ENTRY ACCESS SYSTEM

Avanos Medical (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has announced that it will be
recalling Cortrak*2's Enteral Access System. Avanos Medical feeding tube The
recall was announced due to patient injuries and death from misplaced
nasoenteric/nasogastric tubes. The recall covers 629 devices distributed in the
United States.



Avanos markets its Cortrak*2 enteral access system that allows its visualisation
of the patient's small bowel and stomach, which aids in the placement of a
feeding tube. Avanos Medical feeding tube If a tube is inserted incorrectly,
however the patient could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or trachea.

a recall statement stating that there had been an overall 60 injuries and 23
deaths from mistaken placement, in 2015, due to the CORTRAK*2 Access System.
There have been several injuries, such as respiratory failure, pneumothorax,
collapsed lung perforation (a hole through the lungs' wall or the bowel),
pneumonia and the pleural effusion. This is excess fluid between your lungs as
well as the chest cavity.



Avanos Medical has presented a plan to offer users updated labeling, in order to
confirm the correct positioning of Nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to use



Avanos is the FDA's second warning regarding inserting feeding tubes. In
February the FDA issued a warning to parents and healthcare providers regarding
the risk of strangulation when children are fed via feeding tubes. Two deaths
from child strangulation occurred in 2021 due to the tube being tied around the
neck of a child.
