In Gaza, Israeli women are denied the right to live without fear, torture and
r*pe, unable to go home to their families When will the UN Women intervene on
their behalf to #bringthemhome along with the other hostages? In Gaza - and in
many nations around the world, women are persecuted, discriminated and violated
for their Jewish nationality. When will the United Nations address this publicly
and do something about it? #metoounlessyoureajew

Mothers have a right to be mothers. A doctor at Planned Parenthood taught me
that. Everyone should be that smart. I am an American because my parents were
that and my mother taught me the values of American society. I think she did
well, especially when I go through the family photos. Some may say that my
mother was a simple woman. She had the knowledge of a queen and taught me to be
a princess. I am now a queen. No one can lead a home and remain a princess.
Women deserve more respect worldwide, even in the United States.

Some cultures have strong beliefs about family lineage and inheritance passing
through the male line. These beliefs can influence laws and policies about
nationality. Supporting grassroots organizations that work on gender equality
and human rights issues to create pressure for legal reforms will surely help to
change this narrative.

The real challenge is in the “inheritance”. Laws are made and judgements are
given, yet enforcement is another ball game entirely. The villages and
communities do not listen to what the law says. That’s the main issue. The other
three areas can easily be corrected, but inheritance, is a big issue

In every country, women have the right to choose to become parents. men do not,
nor should they (we) have the right due to gender role. This regardless of the
number of people around the world who were not only raised, but those born into
single-father households. Are you sure you want to bring up gender (in)equality?

We always find one more way to discriminate but education and change in
policymaking can address this issue.

“Gender discrimination in nationality laws undermines women’s equal
citizenship and sustainable development. In twenty-four countries women are
denied the right to pass their nationality to their own child on an equal
basis with men. In over forty countries women are denied the equal right to
pass their nationality to a noncitizen spouse. Those impacted by gender
discrimination in nationality laws often face obstacles in accessing
education, healthcare, employment, property rights, inheritance, and freedom
of movement. They may even be rendered stateless. These discriminatory
nationality laws are holding countries back and contributing to poverty.”

How is citizenship passed to children in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
countries? Do women and men have the same ability to transfer nationality to
their children? This briefing paper answers these questions by delving into a
case analysis of each country’s nationality law, discovering that there is a
pattern of gender discrimination in these laws that is detrimental to women
and creates a great risk of statelessness. Link to the briefing paper here:

Immigration Clashes, Party Polarization, and Republican Radicalization:
Tracking Shifts in State and National Party Platforms since 1980 - PDF:
https://lnkd.in/g9wZHpF3 Studies of U.S. politics increasingly aim to make
sense of two key trends: party polarization and Republican Party
radicalization. Surprisingly, however, party divergences on immigration have
been largely overlooked. Drawing on state and national political party
platforms since 1980, we document the rise of attention to immigration, the
polarization of substantive party positions, and the sharp GOP turn toward
restrictive measures. After pinpointing the timing and relative trajectories
of national and state-level agenda shifts, we explore potential drivers and
establish two sets of flashpoint events worth further study: highly visible
and mostly deadlocked congressional battles over immigration grand bargains,
and bottom-up reverberations from the widespread 2006 immigrant rights
protests and post-2008 Tea Party organizing. We find that grassroots Tea
Party efforts were intervening accelerators rather than original causes of
the Republican embrace of tough immigration restrictions. The article
concludes by stressing the chronological layering of successive party
polarizations—from 1960s divergences around civil rights, through clashes
about abortion and LGBTQ rights from the late 1970s to the1990s, and followed
by immigration polarization in the 2000s. This process of layering
polarizations on top of one another may have supercharged recent GOP turns
toward ethnonationalism and tolerance for threats of violence.

🌎 Today, 21 March, we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination
of Racial Discrimination. As lawyers specialising in immigration law, we join
this important cause to promote equality and justice for all people,
regardless of their ethnic origin or nationality. Racial discrimination
remains a reality in many parts of the world, affecting millions of people in
their access to employment, education and housing opportunities, as well as
in their treatment in society. As human rights defenders, it is our duty to
combat this injustice and work towards a world where every individual is
treated with dignity and respect. In our legal practice, we are committed to
defending the rights of migrants and refugees, who are often victims of
racial discrimination and xenophobia. It is essential that we all have access
to a fair and equitable legal system, regardless of our origin or immigration
status. On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination, we call for action so that together we challenge stereotypes,
promote diversity and work towards building inclusive and welcoming
communities for all. Let's unite in the fight against racism and
   discrimination in all its forms!

“Migrant women on temporary visas are forced to endure sexual harassment in
silence due to numerous factors, including uncertainty regarding their
immigration status,[viii] precarious work,[ix] and racial and gender
workplace discrimination.[x]The research also underscores the need to
allocate more resources to developing services to provide advice, education,
and training to empower migrant women to report sexual harassment.” This
latest research from @unionsnsw is very concerning. Read the research here:

It's #TransDayOfVisibility, but often trans people don't get to be visible on
their own terms. I'm thinking in particular of identification documents that
preserve deadnames and assigned genders at birth, and which many countries
offer no options to change. These out people as trans and cause situations
that range from awkward to threatening, in settings ranging from workplaces
and educational establishments to clinics and hospitals to police and
immigration checkpoints. Let's not forget also that even countries with
trans-friendly laws and protections largely fail to extend legal gender
recognition and name change to trans migrants. When trans rights are not
migrant-inclusive, these issues are prolonged for years - or indefinitely -
because citizenship is the only way to access them. Exclusion may be built
into existing systems, but those systems can and should be changed.

In a landmark decision, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled
that Afghan women should be granted asylum based solely on their gender and
nationality, recognizing the immense dangers they face under the current
Taliban regime. The ruling underscores the international community's
responsibility to protect those who cannot find safety within their own
borders. Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Afghan women have seen
their rights systematically stripped away. They have been denied access to
education, employment, and basic freedoms, making life not just unbearable,
but potentially fatal for many. The ECtHR's decision acknowledges this harsh
reality, affirming that Afghan women face persecution simply for existing in
a society that denies them basic human rights. The ruling highlights the
intersectional vulnerabilities of Afghan women, who suffer not only due to
their gender but also because of the cultural and political landscape that
endangers them daily. By recognizing gender and nationality as sufficient
grounds for asylum, the ECtHR sets a powerful precedent for other countries
grappling with how to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
