A doctor at Planned Parenthood taught me that. Everyone should be that smart. I am an American because my parents were that and my mother taught me the values of American society. I think she did well, especially when I go through the family photos. Some may say that my mother was a simple woman. She had the knowledge of a queen and taught me to be a princess. I am now a queen. No one can lead a home and remain a princess. Women deserve more respect worldwide, even in the United States. Laws are made and judgements are given, yet enforcement is another ball game entirely. The villages and communities do not listen to what the law says. That’s the main issue. In twenty-four countries women are denied the right to pass their nationality to their own child on an equal basis with men. In over forty countries women are denied the equal right to pass their nationality to a noncitizen spouse. Those impacted by gender discrimination in nationality laws often face obstacles in accessing education, healthcare, employment, property rights, inheritance, and freedom of movement. Surprisingly, however, party divergences on immigration have been largely overlooked. Drawing on state and national political party platforms since 1980, we document the rise of attention to immigration, the polarization of substantive party positions, and the sharp GOP turn toward restrictive measures. After pinpointing the timing and relative trajectories of national and state-level agenda shifts, we explore potential drivers and establish two sets of flashpoint events worth further study: highly visible and mostly deadlocked congressional battles over immigration grand bargains, and bottom-up reverberations from the widespread 2006 immigrant rights protests and post-2008 Tea Party organizing. We find that grassroots Tea Party efforts were intervening accelerators rather than original causes of the Republican embrace of tough immigration restrictions. The article concludes by stressing the chronological layering of successive party polarizations—from 1960s divergences around civil rights, through clashes about abortion and LGBTQ rights from the late 1970s to the1990s, and followed by immigration polarization in the 2000s. This process of layering polarizations on top of one another may have supercharged recent GOP turns toward ethnonationalism and tolerance for threats of violence. * Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * ECHEVERRIA ABOGADOS ESPAÑA 124 followers 9mo * Report this post 🌎 Today, 21 March, we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As lawyers specialising in immigration law, we join this important cause to promote equality and justice for all people, regardless of their ethnic origin or nationality. Racial discrimination remains a reality in many parts of the world, affecting millions of people in their access to employment, education and housing opportunities, as well as in their treatment in society. As human rights defenders, it is our duty to combat this injustice and work towards a world where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. In our legal practice, we are committed to defending the rights of migrants and refugees, who are often victims of racial discrimination and xenophobia. It is essential that we all have access to a fair and equitable legal system, regardless of our origin or immigration status. On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we call for action so that together we challenge stereotypes, promote diversity and work towards building inclusive and welcoming communities for all. I'm thinking in particular of identification documents that preserve deadnames and assigned genders at birth, and which many countries offer no options to change. These out people as trans and cause situations that range from awkward to threatening, in settings ranging from workplaces and educational establishments to clinics and hospitals to police and immigration checkpoints. Let's not forget also that even countries with trans-friendly laws and protections largely fail to extend legal gender recognition and name change to trans migrants. When trans rights are not migrant-inclusive, these issues are prolonged for years - or indefinitely - because citizenship is the only way to access them. Exclusion may be built into existing systems, but those systems can and should be changed. 30 Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * European Network of Migrant Women (ENOMW) 4,548 followers 8mo * Report this post 𝗠𝗜𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡'𝗦 𝗔𝗖𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗔𝗦𝗬𝗟𝗨𝗠 ❓ Did you know that, in 2022, according to Eurostat, the 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻 (𝟳𝟬.𝟴 %) 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 (𝟮𝟵.𝟮 %) 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗹𝘂𝗺 in the EU. The ruling underscores the international community's responsibility to protect those who cannot find safety within their own borders. Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Afghan women have seen their rights systematically stripped away. They have been denied access to education, employment, and basic freedoms, making life not just unbearable, but potentially fatal for many. The ECtHR's decision acknowledges this harsh reality, affirming that Afghan women face persecution simply for existing in a society that denies them basic human rights. The ruling highlights the intersectional vulnerabilities of Afghan women, who suffer not only due to their gender but also because of the cultural and political landscape that endangers them daily. By recognizing gender and nationality as sufficient grounds for asylum, the ECtHR sets a powerful precedent for other countries grappling with how to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. https://lnkd.in/eKyWe5PV #women #europeancourt #humanrights #asylum #gender #afghanwomen #intersectionality #humandroits EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE: GENDER AND NATIONALITY SUFFICIENT TO GRANT AFGHAN WOMEN ASYLUM SOCIAL-WWW.FORBES.COM 3 Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in 1,467,150 followers View Profile Follow EXPLORE TOPICS * Sales * Marketing * IT Services * Business Administration * HR Management * Engineering * Soft Skills * See All * LinkedIn © 2024 * About * Accessibility * User Agreement * Privacy Policy * Cookie Policy * Copyright Policy * Brand Policy * Guest Controls * Community Guidelines * * العربية (Arabic) * বাংলা (Bangla) * Čeština (Czech) * Dansk (Danish) * Deutsch (German) * Ελληνικά (Greek) * English (English) * Español (Spanish) * فارسی (Persian) * Suomi (Finnish) * Français (French) * हिंदी (Hindi) * Magyar (Hungarian) * Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) * Italiano (Italian) * עברית (Hebrew) * 日本語 (Japanese) * 한국어 (Korean) * मराठी (Marathi) * Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) * Nederlands (Dutch) * Norsk (Norwegian) * ਪੰਜਾਬੀ (Punjabi) * Polski (Polish) * Português (Portuguese) * Română (Romanian) * Русский (Russian) * Svenska (Swedish) * తెలుగు (Telugu) * ภาษาไทย (Thai) * Tagalog (Tagalog) * Türkçe (Turkish) * Українська (Ukrainian) * Tiếng Việt (Vietnamese) * 简体中文 (Chinese (Simplified)) * 正體中文 (Chinese (Traditional)) Language VIEW MORE INDUSTRY INSIGHTS Create your free account or sign in to continue your search Sign in WELCOME BACK Email or phone Password Show Forgot password?
