Welcome - NASA Science Career Path NavigatorThis career track includes science leadership roles that contribute to the strategic planning, direction, and effective management of NASA science programs. Such roles also involve collaboration with other government entities and international space agencies. Many are supervisory and reside at NASA Headquarters. This career track includes supervisory or management roles at various organization levels that support and provide guidance to the scientific workforce. This track often requires close coordination with science program management to effectively implement the Agency’s and Center’s strategies. Since science programs vary in size at each location, supervisory opportunities, titles, and career paths may look different at each organization. This career track includes science roles that enable future missions through research and technology development. Scientists in this track contribute to new capabilities including devices, hardware, software, systems, methodologies, techniques, and algorithms. This career track includes various science roles that conduct basic and applied research, seeking new knowledge and understanding of our planet Earth, our Sun and solar system, and the universe. It also includes the interpretation, analysis and application of the data obtained, as well as the data storage and computing resources. This career track includes various science roles that lead or support Earth and space science missions. Missions are scientific projects that use space, sub-orbital (e.g., airborne) flights or planetary missions to acquire data in a range of forms (imagery, sensor data, etc.) needed to test hypotheses. Missions may vary in size and complexity, and include various roles that are based on the means for selecting the mission (i.e., directed by the agency or proposed to the agency).Early level scientists are generally focused on becoming a recognized authority in their area of research. This involves performing research that advances the state of knowledge in an important direction in their field. An early level scientist spends a large amount of time publishing in the peer-reviewed literature and presenting scientific research to domestic and international audiences. They begin establishing collaborations outside their research specialty, and outside their institution. They may contribute to an active mission or project as part of a team, but are not expected to lead. Typically, between 0 and 8-10 years following terminal degree.Mid-level scientists have developed themselves as recognized authorities in their area of research, and are involved in one or more research groups, usually as a leading figure in at least one. They report the status and results of their research to domestic and international audiences. They may be called upon by the institution or outside agencies to participate in internal or external reviews on projects of high importance to the agency. The mid-level scientist is an active mentor to junior team members, including students and post-doctoral scholars, and may take on leadership roles in management, individual projects, or components of missions. They should continue to publish, but often as co-author to earlier career team members. Typically, between ~8 and ~20 work years.A senior level scientist should be widely recognized by the institution, the agency, and by the broader international community as providing leadership in particular high visibility areas of importance to the NASA community. They will lead major panels and committees, and may oversee an actively publishing research group of mid- and early level scientists. The senior level scientist may take on a more senior management role within the organization and be responsible for initiatives that have high visibility and priority within the organization and that position the organization for future missions. They contribute essential components (leadership or technical) to large mission or programmatic activities, guiding the science and strategy of the activity for the full team. Typically, more than ~20 work years. The NASA science workforce broadly consists of Federal Civil Servants across the 10 NASA Centers, lab employees at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), government contractors, detailees, university scientists, post-doctoral researchers, fellows, and interns. This tool features common positions and career paths within the Federal Civil Service, JPL, and APL.Page URL History Show full URLs
