Meet Rutendo, an information technology expert at the IAEA, whose early
exposure to science and technology sparked her passion for exploring
practical applications of #STEM. Rutendo began her IT career in network
technologies before transitioning to information security. She is driven by
the belief that technology empowers communication and innovation. Reflecting
on her work in IT, she says, “One of the advantages of working in IT is that
it’s so dynamic. It’s always changing, and this keeps the work exciting and
full of opportunities to keep growing.” In her current role, Rutendo oversees
how the IAEA manages access to its digital data and systems, focusing on the
critical task of managing user identities. Read more about #HERstory:

On this day in 1852, Nobel Laureate Henri Becquerel was born! This French
physicist was the first person to discover the phenomenon of radioactivity.
He was awarded the The Nobel Prize in Physics together with Marie and Pierre
Curie in 1903. For his incredible influence on this field, a unit of
measurement was named after him: the becquerel.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi called for diplomacy and dialogue
to reduce nuclear tensions and prevent proliferation in his keynote speech at
the #NobelPeacePrize Forum today. “When it comes to working on behalf of
peace and security, playing it safe is dangerous,” he said. While in Oslo, DG
Grossi discussed nuclear issues in meetings with Norway’s Prime Minister
Jonas Gahr Støre, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of International
Development. He also spoke at Al Jazeera English’s Nobel Interview 2024. Read

In Oslo, I had the honour of attending #NobelPeacePrize ceremony and
delivering the Forum’s keynote speech on the urgent need for diplomacy and
multilateralism to navigate today’s conflicts. Nearly 40 years ago, as a
young diplomat, I met a hibakusha in Hiroshima. Her silent, pained expression
became a lifelong reminder—a “secret mandate”—to work so that her suffering
is never repeated. Today, the road to a nuclear weapon-free world is long and
winding. Yet lessons from history show us the way forward. Dialogue among
superpowers has led to critical agreements. We need that spirit of
cooperation and responsible leadership now more than ever. At the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), we prove our relevance through
action: verifying nuclear programmes, ensuring nuclear safety and security,
and reducing risks. Silence and indifference can be deadly. Let’s choose
diplomacy. Let’s choose dialogue. With cooperation, we can forge a new path
to a safer future. Personally, the “secret mandate” given to me in Hiroshima
burns stronger than ever, driving me to ensure the suffering of the hibakusha
   is never repeated.
