Smoke and haze from the wildfires ravaging swaths of Canadian forest have
reached the eastern United States. Hazardous particles have degraded air quality
in places as far away as South Carolina, turning the skies gray and brown. In
New York City, which for a time early Wednesday was behind only New Delhi for
poor air pollution levels worldwide, officials warned of health risks and told
vulnerable people to wear high-quality masks — such as a N95 or KN95 — if they
go outside. As of Wednesday, Canada was on track to experience its worst
wildfire season ever, with officials reporting more than 400 active fires, with
more than 240 listed as “out of control.”

Here’s what to know

 * Detroit was also ranked among the 10 cities with the world’s worst air
quality, and Toronto was in the top 15, according to IQ Air, an air quality
information platform. New York was ranked fourth by midmorning Wednesday.
Hints of smoke were even flirting with the Georgia-Florida border.
 * More than 150 of the fires burning now in Canada are in the province of
Quebec, with dozens also reported in Alberta and British Columbia.
 * People should stay indoors, limiting exposure to the smoke as much as
possible, including during exercise, experts said. Be aware of your local air
quality and wear masks that can filter out tiny particles, they added.
