This webinar features a discussion on how cavity expansion theory originally
developed in the 1960s, and sheds light on which models/equations should be
used to estimate the maximum allowable annular drilling fluid pressures
before hydrofracture or blowout will occur during horizontal directional
drilling (HDD) operations.
There have been numerous equations and models that have been developed for
evaluating the risk of hydraulic fracture including the most widely known
Delft equation. We will discuss how the Delft equation is used for evaluating
hydraulic fracture potential in coarse-grained soils. Queen’s University has
also presented alternative solutions for evaluating hydraulic fracture
potential in fine-grained (clay) soils.
Special Guest Dr. Ian Moore of Queen’s University joins the conversation
about the latest advancements. Dr. Moore is a leading researcher in the field
of trenchless technology and in particular hydraulic fracture analysis, and a
Professor and Head Research Director for the Civil Engineering department at
the GeoEngineering Centre at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada.

WALLA WALLA RIVER FORKS RESTORATION PROJECT
GeoEngineers helped the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian
Reservation complete one of its largest and most complex river restoration
efforts to date, the Walla Walla River Forks Project. The project aimed to
restore river processes, remove fish passage barriers, enhance habitat
quality, and improve the reliability of water delivery for irrigation.
For decades, adjacent farmers used temporary push-up dams to divert
irrigation water during the spring and summer months, blocking fish passage.
Our project team collaborated with the farmers to find designs that would
maintain fish passage, protect aquatic habitat, and deliver irrigation water
even more efficiently.
GeoEngineers modeled the river’s behavior and then designed a sustainable and
naturally evolving reach. The team removed an 800-foot confining levee that
separated the river from its historical floodplain and designed more than
2,200 linear feet of new side channels through riparian habitat.
When construction finished in fall 2022, the reach had greater flood storage
capacity, increased floodplain connectivity, significantly improved fish and
wildlife habitat, unencumbered fish passage, and reliable irrigation water
delivery.
