Double Glazed Window Repair<br /><br />Double glazing is a great investment in energy efficiency. It helps prevent heat loss during the winter months and keeps your home cool in summer. Restoring your double-glazed windows as needed is a great way to keep them in good working order.<br /><br />Over time your double glazed windows may experience problems like condensation and misting. Double glazed windows can be difficult to open and close.<br /><br />Broken Panes<br /><br />A rogue baseball, a flying pebble from your lawnmowers, or even a severe storm can shatter the double panes of your windows and expose your home to the elements. While a damaged glass window is difficult to repair however, it does not need to be replaced. In fact the insulated glass between the two panes is in good condition and you can fix your double-pane window using some DIY effort.<br /><br />To begin, you'll need to take the broken glass out of the frame. You'll need to be cautious to prevent glass shards from falling to the floor or falling from the frame. Wear gloves for your hands and use an abrasive cloth around the damaged glass area to prevent further cuts or damage. After taking out the broken glass, clean the frame of the window thoroughly to get rid of any sealant or other debris. Sand rough areas of the window frame to create a smooth and even surface to install your new glazing.<br /><br />After cleaning the frame and dried, you can apply a new layer of glass to the place where the damaged pane was removed. This is the most effective method to seal and protect your window. It will also save you money by preventing water and drafts from entering the home. Next, you will need to choose the right glazing material. There are several options such as clear tape, which is more durable than regular tape and helps prevent further cracking of your window, or glazing film that is similar to clear plastic wrap. This option has the advantage that it can be painted to match your frame and will also block out the elements like ice and rain.<br /><br />No matter what material you choose, it's important to press the glaziers points into that seam where the putty meets your frame. These will hold the newly-formed glass in place and aid it adhere to the frame. The glazier's point can be found in hardware stores, and are available in pre-made ropes that you roll over the frame rabbets.<br /><br />Condensation<br /><br />If you have a problem with condensation, it is recommended to contact the window manufacturer. Many companies provide warranties and guarantees that cover the issues. Fogging and condensation between panes of glass is an obvious indication that the seals between your windows are broken and must be repaired by an expert who will repair both panes.<br /><br />The process is tricky and requires the use of special tools to take off the old pane and then install the new one, however it is possible to do this by a professional who will provide the necessary equipment. It is best to leave the job to professionals.
