Dreaming: Spotlight on Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" Written by Cindy Lynn Speer in
May of 2002

From the darkness, old voices call to him, and he awakes in a glass prison in a
deep cellar. This was where Sandman began, with Dream trapped by Burgess, who
intended to capture Death. When I heard the news, I immediately began rereading
Sandman in rapt anticipation, and, most recently, I have picked up: both
annotated volumes, which are perhaps the coolest coffee table books ever; the
Sandman Companion , by Hy Bender; and the Sandman Papers , a collection of
scholarly essays focusing on the series.

To put it concisely: I am trying to read everything there is about or in context
of Sandman.

Sandman - You Think You Know Comics?

These two gorgeous editions collect 39 issues of Sandman and possess the most
astounding marginalia by Leslie Klinger. Reading the annotations along with the
comic has given me some special insight into the series; I feel empowered by the
knowledge gleaned about all the literature, biblical, musical, and internal
references.

Nevertheless, reading these gargantuan, black and white texts, as an adult, has
helped me better appreciate what Sandman is really about. Personally, after
reading this comic, I had to take a break of sorts from Sandman. Gaiman explores
the most base and terrifying group dynamics and the most obscene glimpses into
the mind of the power-hungry.

The comic is a bleak look at dreams and, via Dee, the maniacal depths of a
god-complex; however, it also possesses an essay on storytelling—and that is how
it breaks the rules the most egregiously. They use the space and time of the
comic inhabited by a hero to tell story; however, Sandman creates a hero that
inhabits the space and time of story. And I made him the incarnations of dreams
and stories because that game me a framework for telling virtually any kind of
tale. As a writer, Gaiman has done much to explore the mythopoetic
process—particularly in books like American Gods and Anansi Boys.

PRELUDES & NOCTURNES (THE SANDMAN, #1) BY NEIL GAIMAN

So what is it about his metafiction that draws him back? Why can't he seem to
escape the orbits of his previous creations? But you knew it from the start. In
, the deathless man sits alone at the pub, smoking a cigarette. As The Sandman
issues continue, Dream becomes more and more receptive to humanity, just as he
was with the ageless man. And, he expresses a deep commitment to serving
humanity, not to toying with them like dolls. Shadow is mostly human while Dream
is anything but. However, as the two go through the course of events in their
respective narratives, Shadow discovers his limited godhood and Dream finds
himself more connected to humans.

If Dream finds himself in search of human friendship, does that make his search
for meaning fundamentally a search for human connection? No one knows.

THE NERD WRITER WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT GAIMAN’S SANDMAN

It can be frustrating, but when we turn to the subject of finding and making
meaning, it feels incredibly poignant. How on earth can we know or believe or do
anything when we know that at any moment we can drop dead? Because we assign
meaning to our decisions. Ultimately, I would argue, Gaiman posits that the
creation of meaning is in telling the story.

It is only when Dream understands how he is caught up in the story of human
history that he can accept that he wants to be there. What better way to do so

audiences. Not only are they too basic to be of use to scholars, but a
non-scholarly reader would probably learn more from rereading the original
stories than from reading these essays. At a more fundamental level, these four
essays reflect the book's overly sympathetic attitude toward Gaiman.

The authors make the unstated assumption that, when Gaiman wrote The Sandman ,
he knew what he was doing and did it successfully. Their basic purpose,
therefore, is merely to state what Gaiman intended to do and how he did it —
that is, to celebrate Gaiman's achievement. This in itself is fine, but it seems
to have led the authors to shy away from criticism that might have exposed flaws
or aporias in the text. Needless to say, this is a fundamentally uncritical
attitude, and it reinforces the impression that The Sandman Papers is a work of
fan scholarship disguised as academic scholarship an impression which is
reinforced by the fact that Gaiman himself wrote the introduction.

Luckily, this isn't the end of the story, because the book also features a
number of essays that use unexpected outside perspectives to develop insights
the reader might otherwise have missed. For example, although David Bratman's
discussion of fan reactions to A Game of You is not really a scholarly paper,
Bratman has a strong grasp of fannish science fiction criticism and uses this
perspective to produce a well-reasoned argument in favor of the story.

Unfortunately, this paper again left me wanting more. Bratman explains why,
contrary to the opinion of some fans, AGOY is not a sexist text.

But he stops short of discussing why fans perceived it as sexist, which, to my
mind, is the more intriguing question. Nonetheless, Bratman's paper at least has
a coherent perspective and a non-trivial argument, unlike the other papers in
the first section.

DRAWN BACK INTO DREAMING: SPOTLIGHT ON NEIL GAIMAN'S "SANDMAN"

despite his reservations, he ends up accepting his new job. He comes from the
darkness and brings the light. It was simply another medium with its own set of
strengths and its own set of weaknesses. Nonetheless, Bratman's paper at least
has a coherent perspective and a non-trivial argument, unlike the other papers
in the first section.

Similarly, Lyra McMullen's study of Dream's Asian costumes is plagued by a poor
prose style and a series of poorly substantiated, reductionist arguments.
However, McMullen's expert knowledge of costuming is clear, and when she sticks
to discussing the costumes themselves and their immediate significance, her
essay is often fascinating. A third essay that falls into this category is
Sanders and Stacie Hanes's collaborative study of witches in Gaiman and Terry
Pratchett. Don't have an account?
